Күн бұрын

"Physical Conditioning For a Purpose" was a production by the National Varsity Club which was co-sponsored by the President's Council On Physical Fitness and Sports in Washington, DC. The film was hosted and narrated by national physical fitness expert and PE leader Mr. Glenn Swengros.
This film is part of the Stan LeProtti Family Archive collection on LaSierra High School Physical Education. I am curating the archive collection for the LeProtti family.
For more information on LaSierra High PE including the former and current benefits of classical physical education, please see the award-winning documentary film "The Motivation Factor" by filmmaker Doug Orchard. I was the PE historian for the film and provided some of the narration.

It's fascinating to watch the running form of the LaSierra boys because most of them were not distance runners yet ran with better form than most of the elite XC runners in high school today! The gravity work they did off the ground really helped to align their bodies, and the well-balanced physical training they did in PE set them up for balance of movement whether running or doing anything else physical too. This is a graphic portrayal of the values or "real PE" and why we should be doing it now too. -RJ

Well that was a trip down memory lane. I graduated HS in 1990. I remember doing all those drills in football. My HS coach did not believe in weight training, bulked the muscles up he said. So we pulled tractor tires, semi truck tires wire harnesses he made. We flipped tractor tires. We did farmer walked with what are called suitcase tractor weights, they fit on the front of a tractor to add weight. We put bags of sand in a wheelbarrow and pushed it up a hill. He believed the body is to be worked as a unit. We did do thise isometric neck drills, pullups and dips. The only weight lifting we were allowed to do was power cleans, power snatches and power clean to overhead press.

@@MosesGBrown My HS FB Coach/Physical Educator was a disciple of the Gemanic/Swedish philosophies of movement. My Coach through donations and volunteers built series a pull up bars and dip bars. 20 students could be doing pull ups, 20 doing dips. If you could do 10 or more pullups, the person behind you added more resistance by holding on as you performed the up portion of the pull up. If you could not do 10, the person behind you help you do the pullup and you slowly lowered yourself down. If you could not do a single pullup, you would do flexed arm hangs and slowly lowered. The great thing was everyone was there to support each other.

They did that at about the time the offspring of Baby Boomers entered middle school which was junior high in my day. Parents wanted everyone to be a winner so you ended up with participation trophies, and this was probably because most kids growing up in the 1960s and 70s got a poorly executed version of La Sierra's program where the coaches clearly had favorites or didn't bother or succeed with instilling the all for one, one for all ethos. Now it shows with everyone on the verge of fighting each other like starving rats. 😢

My argument for why this kind of PE should not be implemented again is that students who participate in sports should be allowed to focus on their sport instead of throwing off their training and spending energy on this PE. I'm only on board if students had a choice in what kind of PE they took, or if they could waive it in favor of their sport.
@TheLeanBerets
@TheLeanBerets 2 жыл бұрын
When you run this kind of classical PE, it enhances sport performance in athletes--it does not detract from it. One of the biggest problems today in America is the irrational youth sports programs that prioritize year-round single sport participation at higher levels than D1 or pro athletes in the same sport. It's producing imbalanced athletes both physically and mentally with soaring injury rates. These types of sports programs are abusive. Having worked with professional sports teams and D1 and Olympic athletes, they all had the same concerns of which included correcting an imbalance of training from a single sport focus along with other improper conditioning methods. True classical PE restores a body to its natural state. Since most American PE programs are not really PE anyway and are essentially worthless--I would not necessarily disagree that they are not helping the youth athlete; however, if we are talking about "real" PE like LaSierra or other classical PE programs, the opposite is true as I explained. -Ron Jones, MS
