I was researching about this and just couldn't believe that someone with an undergraduate degree in Psychology can apply for PT major since those courses are extremely different in their very foundation. If the undergraduate degree doesn't matter why does it exist in first place? I'm a PT from Brazil, got my BA deg in 2000, got my residency done in physical therapy in ICU in 2002, got my MS and Doc, worked in that specialty for 7 years, and taught in the field for 16 years. Here, depending on the university, it takes between 4.5 - 5 years to get a BA on PT. Since the first year, all the courses we take, from Biology to Anatomy, are directed towards physical therapy. The law also guarantees that basic internships in a large variety of specialties are provided by the universities in the last 2 years of the entire BA course so the student can get a taste of each specialty and decide which one he'll want to specialize after the BA ends, indeed my internship in ICU is what made me choose that specialty (this is done via partnerships between the universities and public and private hospitals, some universities even have their own hospitals). I was comparing the courses I took with those of several PT schools in the US and the curriculum here is much broader than there (Fundamentals of Surgery, Physical Therapy for Prevention and Ergonomy, Physical Therapy for the Pelvic Floor, Physical Therapy in Critical Care and Mechanical Ventilation are some that I haven't seen in most graduate PT programs there). I wonder why the universities don't offer those courses to students instead of making them waste 4 years with many that are not really important. We also have the option of going to a public PT school (we have federal and state universities that offer the course) and the student pays NOTHING to get a BA, MD, Doc and PhD in them ( he just needs to be approved in a series of exams to get into them).This is a curriculum of a BA in Physical Therapy of a federal university in the state of São Paulo: translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fuspdigital.usp.br%2Fjupiterweb%2FlistarGradeCurricular%3Fcodcg%3D17%26codcur%3D17100%26codhab%3D4%26tipo%3DN&sandbox=1 Indeed the public universities here are on the top of the rank of the country because not only they offer higher education and research but also Extension (a program where students apply their knowledge in form of preventive measures, supervised evaluation/ treatment of the community and other related activities). Even while getting the BA in PT, students can enroll in research programs that are financed by the government and they get paid for it. I can't believe how much debt people need to put themselves into in order to get a PT degree in the US, a country that's rich and could offer that if the politicians truly wanted to do so. This system of undergraduate is just insane and designed to take people's money and sink those who don't have it in debt in my opinion. The MPT in the US is a short, summarized version of our BA here.

I am studying in Europe so our education systems differ, but I have a “major” (4years) in communications and now I am finishing my first year in PT school (4 years). In my case, not having previous knowledge made me study far more than my peers (biology and biophysics being the hardest ones for me). I came from a family full of lawyers, so my background was pure social sciences. If you are like me, I encourage you to become a PT. I swear that now my knowledge has improved vastly due to being exposed to health sciences. I feel far more versatile than my peers, that do not like to read, struggle with English classes/materials and sweat when there is an oral presentation or a clinic case simulation.

I’m a Mechanical Engineering major at the moment, but recently physical therapy has seemed to peak my interest. I like working with people and having a connection with people. How would I just go about applying with an engineering degree ?(let’s hope I get it) just take an online class here and there? At least just the required ones. Thanks in advance nice video

Hi Alex - yes, you can take the generally recommended pre-reqs, but many PTP programs have a slight variation in a few of the pre-reqs. For example, some may require a math course while another doesn't...but the other school may require a psychology course. Stay tuned for more videos on what's required and how to pursue a career in PT :)

Hannah Kimbleee - that’s exactly what you can do. Learn what pre reqs are required (there’s an article on that on PTProgress) and take those classes in the summer or during your semester. I took a few classes after I graduated because I worked full time in finance for a few years before applying to PT school. Good luck!

@agentydeeps5452 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hannah! So for instance, if you want to become a physical therapist, all you need are the pre reqs. You can still recieve a BA in a whole different field and still qualify for physical therapy school/program as long as the pre reqs are completed. My goal is to become an occupational therapist and all I need is 5 pre req classes and of course a BA, but I can earn that degree in any field.

Hi I have a question. I have a 2.1 BA hons degree in a non science subject from a British University. I want to become a Physiotherapist. Would it be worthwhile to go back an md do another bachelors degree (BSC) or should I aim to do a masters in Physiotherapy (MSc) ?? Thanks for your help. ALSO, when you say you had a degree in business and then applied to “PT school”, does that mean you applied for a masters degree in Physiotherapy?
@merlinel3855

Sarah .93 As long as you got a bachelors degree you’ll be able to get into the program. It might take longer because you’ll need to take the prerequisites and science classes, like biology, chemistry, and physics.

Hi. I would like to ask, I have also non health science bachelor’s degree, I’m planning to do my prerequisites but some schools they cant accept me to take some Physics class and other class as I need to finish some courses that requires me to do DPT Prerequisites. Did you also take that besides DPT Prerequisites? Thank you. God bless
@PTProgress
@PTProgress 4 жыл бұрын
I was able to complete a few prerequisite courses online. I’m sure you could find some good options now as well since many colleges are going online with classes this semester. Look at the university of Idaho as they are very reasonable with course tuition.
