I forget the guy's name, but there was a person who lived in Hiroshima, survived the first bomb, had to cycle three days to his place of work, only to be caught in the second blast as well, because he worked in Nagasaki.

In regards to the Yakuza thing at the beginning. It's an odd thing to think about because the Yakuza are a notoriously violent collection of gangs but on the other hand, the reason people join these gangs is because of their material conditions. Those in worse off economic conditions were far more likely to join the Yakuza and because it was made up of a lot of people who were from those situations, you'd see many Yakuza engage in humanitarian projects like disaster relief in the face of Tsunamis and Earthquakes. To make things more interesting, the Yakuza (Allegedly) often had much quicker response times than actual emergency services. It's interesting to think about that juxtaposition of violent gangs to humanitarian forces. But then again, I imagine the Yakuza's goal (Like many forms of organized crime like the Mafia) wasn't to harm the general public but to resist authority and offer a place for societal rejects.

I'm not a yaluza expert or anything close but this is what I always took away from it! Throughout the world we see similar groups form exactly BECAUSE of their material conditions. The violence and crime was generally not against civilians but against other syndicates, effectively creating a secondary government for local protection. These obviously have a lot of problems but the solution is almost always improving the material conditions for people. You don't have as easy of a recruiting process if the local people have opportunities and resources and proper social safety nets.

The most famous American gangster Al Capone (Scarface) ran a soup kitchen during the Great Depression that served three hot meals a day to thousands of the unemployed people. Yeah, it was probably to get on people's good side after some murders, but he still helped thousands of starving people when the government couldn't. The Mob, Yakuza and Gangs can be much more complex than just violent groups in action movies. Helping people can be more effective than violence.

yea i find that rather than saying chinese v japanese it would be easier to think of them as one. different types of chinese also use different characters to describe things because even though they all use the same script, they all developed differently. proof: ancient japanese is completely readable to a modern day chinese person but a japanese person would be confused reading the same text. modern japanese and modern chinese dialects have all developed separately from their og source

2:00 yeah, I’ve heard some odd stories about the Yakuza. Most of them boil down to them being a very violent organised crime gang that occasionally did some arguably good things for the communities they were in. (Usually because although they were focused on crime, they at least made sure the local crime followed strict rules)

Japan's society is a very strange one; It still draws from aspects of their older societal structures like caste systems and military dictatorship (Shogunate). I mention it because you said about the Edo period treating most commoners like crap, despite the progress that was made. It seems certain groups there are still looked down on because of it, which is very sad to hear.

The one issue I have with Bill's otherwise fantastic work is that he doesn't mention the end for WWII that Japan's government wanted to unleash: Operation Ketsu-Go. Its absence makes the atomic bombings look like flights of fancy in Wurtz's narration. There's little doubt that Ketsu-Go would have resulted in the annihilation of a significant percentage of the total Japanese population. Quite a significant omission.

18:54 funnily enough... the samurai honor code did not exist back during the sengoku jidai and other times associated with the Samurai. Indeed, they kept betraying each other. It was Tokugawa Ieyasu that forced it down the throats of everyone how they should behave during his government. So, yeah... the honor code we know of was developed during the transition from samurai being mostly warriors to samurai being mostly burocrats.

9:12 the closing of the country is bit more complicated than that. Portugal had recently lost their colonies in India to the dutchs, but still made a fortune in japan. So much of a fortune, actually, that they pretty much ignored their american colony. But when Tokugawa finally unified Japan, their interest in importing guns at the numbers needed for a war decreased, dunking the Portuguese economy... so Portugal decided to recruit the help of the jesuites (a religious order) to instigate a new civil war in Japan... the jesuits are an international religious order, which had dutch people, more interested in dutch powers than actual religious stuff... they told the Dutchs what Portugal was doing... the dutches, that were still trying to steal every asian colony from Portugal, denounced the portuguese to Tokugawa, and offered help to crush down the rebellion before it even started in exchange for an exclusive trade deal with Japan... for all it is said that Japan closed itself to the rest of the word, the Nagasaki bay (yeah, THAT Nagasaki) still accepted dutch traders... exclusevely dutch traders... and, in exchange, the dutches would keep their presence strictly business oriented, no trying to convert japanese ppl into christianity (which was a huge problem Tokugawa had with the Portuguese). It could be said that the japanese signed the best colony-metropoly deal ever in a way, as they kept everything they already had, they just had to restrict trade with foreigners to the dutch. And, because it is impossible to keep control of everyone that lands anywhere, the easiest way to fulfill their part of the deal was to stablish the death penalty to any foreigner who arrived in japanese coastal waters... unless they had a dutch flag, then they were allowed to approach Nagazaki and trade, but not land (japanese merchants would approach the dutch ships with their boats and conduct trade on the sea, then return with the dutch goods). Interestingly enough, the arrival of the Americans was not completely a surprise to the japanese, there were samurai who had being reading dutch books about the development of the western world, and had already being pledging to the shogun to apply some of what they read about, before a powerful nation imposed their will upon Japan. To no avail. As a sidenote, the kick out of the Portuguese from Japan pretty much nailed the coiffin for Portuguese colonization in Asia... having a huge annual debt to England (Portugal exported spices, but imported pretty much everything else), they had to recover their losses somewhere. and there was this huge unexploited piece of land called "Brasil" (well, actually brazil, with a z, at those times, it would be a while before the z was replaced for an s) whose discoverer wrote in 1500 "these lands in which whatever you plant will grown", and then there were this many colonies in Africa that had an habit of putting captured foes to work... and Portugal thought "hm, why not take this cultural thing there, scale up to 11, drop any morals involved and use it to transform this savage land at the other side of the sea into something productive that pays our debts to England?" follows the largest slave trade in history, the desertification of Brasil's northeast (that was forest when the Portuguese arrived, nowdays it is a desert), the genocide of natives and the persecution of jews in Portugal that had to either adopt a christian name and go to Brasil to work those slaves into building a productive colony or get denounced to the Inquisition. I suppose that's where the "go to Brasil" meme started as well. damn japanese, if only they kept warring at each other and buying portuguese guns to kill each other... 11:35 oh... he talked about it on the video

9:46 the Yakuza started as an organization of Himm/Eta trying to demand better conditions for their social class. they organized the work that only Eta would do (prostitution, game houses and some other things when the government went crazy and started banning a bunch of shit because of public morals... even theaters!), and use that money to finance their armament so they could not only demand more rights/better conditions, but also protect themselves from those that disrespected them. Of course, with time things went sideways, as they tend to do, but the Yakuza started as an Eta organization demanding better treatment for the lowest social class in the country.

The only thing I don't like about that video, is how they trivialize the reasons why the USA dropped the nuclear bombs on Japan. The reality is, after the battle of Okinawa, where both sides suffered massive losses, the US realized that in order to get to the emperor and end the war, they would have to kill every man, woman and child old enough to hold a gun or a knife. Their attitude of "death is better than dishonor" and their pride of never admit defeat, made clear entering the main islands had the potential to be the biggest bloodshed of the entire war. Only after seeing they were left with no hope, the emperor could surrender, which could be argued that saved lives on both sides. Also, the long term effects of radiation from the bombs were not knows until years later. There are some stories of some Japanese soldiers who lived hidden in islands after the war because they didn't know the war had ended. When they were found, the hardest thing to do was to convince them that the war was over and Japan had lost. They were well aware that their national attitude was "death before surrendering", and some times they kept fighting for long time, just like they expected the rest of Japan to react to an invasion.

So what you're saying is, if it wasn't for the US dropping those bombs anime wouldn't have existed.
