thanks! love the editing that allows better visualisation of the dermatonal distribution. btw i have a question: there are clinicians who choose to perform dermatome testing to random areas of the limb without following dermatonal distribution with the argument that dermatonal distribution differs greatly across individuals anyway -- what do you think about that?

Check out our video on why dermatome maps are flawed that we recently published, we discuss a lot of those points and how we should utilize dermatome assessment in practice

our professors tell us we should stroke the area, but instead lightly touch it with q tips and ask if the pts feels a 'same or different' why ?

As someone who suffers fro colon health issues, I find that when my lower colon or sigmoid is inflamed with too much gas, I get burning pain around my ankles and up to my knees. I am sure that there are nerves which innovate these lower colon areas are pressured from internal swelling by gas or food reactions effects these dermatones.

Hi guys, love the explanation, but the mapping doesn't align with most diagrams available - most seems to be in narrow strips vertically spiraling around the leg instead of bands surrounding chunks of the leg as you demonstrate. Can you please make sure you are showing the correct areas?
@bradreinhard547
@bradreinhard547 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I know there is differing dermatomes per author and I have previously been studying one in my Netter textbook which has L4 through the front of the knee and had L5 going down to the big toe. I know there is differing dermatomal maps but was wondering if the one you have shown is more accurate?
@bradreinhard547
@bradreinhard547 5 жыл бұрын
And if this is the dermatomal map I should know, do you have a PDF version of it? Thanks!
@Physiotutors
@Physiotutors 5 жыл бұрын
L5 is also going to the big toe in our case, L4 is on the shin. There is no right or wrong. Most maps have a lot of overlap, but are also different. So can 't recommend you any "superior" map.

I'm certain that reflexes is more reliable than myotomes, and myotomes are more reliable than dermatomes. Dermatomes is surface level and can be subjective

The way you test dermatomes called summation and as I know its not preferred
@Physiotutors
@Physiotutors 5 жыл бұрын
What is your suggestion instead? And what do you mean with summation? In a practice setting you test the dermatome where the patient reports changes in sensitivity and compare it to the other side. You don't test all of them.
@ToanTheNomad
@ToanTheNomad 4 жыл бұрын
He means that by stroking the leg as shown in the video, you risk temporal/spatial summation which could overstimulate the area and falsify your results

Why "your" dermatomes are different than most I have seen? E.g., from wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatome_(anatomy)#/media/File:Grant_1962_663.png

Because not one chart is the same. There is also a lot of overlap in real life. “Our” dermatomes are from the ASIA chart
