This is the 1st episode from my new Myth series. It is focused on the most resilient and destructive myth of our modern times: the belief that it is possible to become a good pianist (and even a virtuoso) in only a couple of months. Being rooted in ignorance (and our desire for instant gratification), this 'fast-food' mentality is the 'one myth that rules them all', and the source of many other harmful misconceptions. Watch the video to discover how things really work, where TRUE fulfillment comes from - and how to build stellar piano skills!
Video highlights:
00:00. Did you know that more than 90% of piano players don't move past the beginner stage?
00:41. Introducing the new Myth series!
01:25. What is a myth? My mission and the purpose of this series.
02:33. The structure of each video.
02:43. Myth No. 1: You Can Become a Piano Virtuoso in 3 Months! The 'piano hamburger'.
03:33. Myth Origin. Desire, superheroes... and a Tom & Jerry illustration!
04:59. Reality. (Spoiler: no magic pills have been harmed in the process!)
05:37. The maximum we can learn in a couple of weeks/months.
06:09. Information is not enough: we need transformation! The 'teamwork' involved in piano playing.
07:16. Why it takes time to form serious skills.
07:55. How much time do we really need to form good piano skills?
08:41. Why do you play music? Real love is for life - so time is not an issue!
09:17. Let's take a look at a related myth: Learning the notes equals mastering the piece! A 'Moonlight Sonata' illustration.
10:19. Why is learning the notes not enough? A Hamlet illustration.
11:57. Is note-only playing really satisfying? The facts tell us otherwise.
12:23. Myth Dangers.

13 mins... i had to stop and really reevaluate my life. To be honest, i don't even know where the idea of me playing piano came about. If i was inspired or not or a sense of pressure by my parents to make them proud or to gain recognition and acceptance or feel superior over those who put my soul to the dirt. This reminds me of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. The illusion of life and what we believe. Living inside the cave when theres a whole world outside of our knowledge. Like how do you know theres more to know if what you are shown is limited and not encouraged? The 3 mental complexity, our immunity to change, taking 5 steps backwards instead of 10 steps forward.. Man everything that i recieve, i really got to question it. It was a habit i used to had but school took that away. I don't even recognize myself anyone. I'd love nothing more to play piano but theres so much that i want to do as well. Why is that? Am i ambitious or is there another spell at work? Am i even asking the right questions haha.. jeez its almost a paradox but i didn't mean to vent. I have to unlearn alot of shit and what i thought was a path for me to take was another fools gold. Im only 21 years old and just full of mistakes. To be more honest, i don't think i ever had a moment in my life where i truly felt inspired to chase something. I dont want to be just a number on a statistical chart.. comfort is weird. Its a "bad" choice to make but also you want comfort when playing piano for more fluent playing. Balance. Idk i guess i have to go back to the drawing board again.. man i didnt know it was gon be this hard and with nobody to give me insight like you.. its lonely here. I got nobody who thinks or has knowledge that can expand my knowledge or just conversations that really test ourselves of what is real and how much we really know is true. Its like they repeat words, thoughts, habits, lifestyle like a plague and it takes away our individuality and our ability to reason and or to critically think. Being creative is difficult. Changing is difficult. Long term fulfillment seems like an impossible goal. I wonder... how many neo can really exist and if like cypher, go back and pleasure the system by going back and teaching these short term solutions/gratification to blind those truth seekers in the age of information, and make sure we stay loyal to their rules, the false enlightenment, the shortcuts, the deception, the works of cognitive biases and fallacies, is it really fair that we are struggling? Where now more than ever we are lonelier? Yeah im just a crazy person i guess.. i wish everyone on their journey to learn piano a fulfilling time. This was difficult for the new ego i was making... Thank you. And i really do mean that. Now... time to finish the video. I do hope this get lost lol

So glad to have you back - a great video here! The right mindset is so so important when practicing piano. When I get frustrated with my slow progress (and I’ve been playing for 10+ years), I keep repeating myself that mastering piano is a lifetime journey and that what makes it super fun too! I guess the concept of 10,000 hours applies to piano just like to everything else in life that requires deliberate practice!
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! :) The 10,000 hours concept is true - but what makes it work is QUALITY (focused, deliberate, serious practice). I met a lot of players who have been practicing incorrectly for many years, being stuck as a result, and not making much progress. If we combine mindful practice + a good progressive method + TIME, great results are inevitable! I talk more about this in episode No. 6 of the Myth series :).

One of the problems I have with spreading this information is you can very easily come of as pretentious or an elitist. People are so used to the wrong idea of music already. it's hard to change them.
@tatianamendoncastudio
@tatianamendoncastudio 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on the people‘s goals with music. I have seen people having lots of progress in a short time, others getting stuck (like me in the first two years)... This fast learning thing is a marketing strategy and approach people have when learning by themselves, but people who have qualified piano teachers know that she is right!
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 3 жыл бұрын
V, I know how you feel - and that's exactly why I decided to record the Myth series. People ARE used to the wrong idea of music - therefore somebody has to have the courage to uncover the truth :). Just like Tatiana mentioned - the 'fast' learning promise sells very well these days, but it offers the same results as fast-food: a full stomach in 5 minutes, and lots of problems in the long run. Education means changing incorrect mindsets and helping people to transform - even when it feels like 'mission impossible'. If we do this right, we cannot come of as 'elitists' - after all, the message is exactly the opposite: EVERYONE can learn how to play well if they wish to (not just professional Conservatory students).

@Hello 👋 , I have a question for you. I hope you can answer. Since last year I have a new (digital) piano, a Kawai CN39. The problem is, I can’t get my knees under the piano (My hight is 6.3 feet). Because of this I’m not able to play with the right posture. When I try to play a scale or arpeggio, I can feel my posture is not good and feeling tension in my shoulders. What is your experience with tall people who can’t place their legs under the piano? I hope maybe you have some advice for me how to solve this problem. Kind regards, John

Is it bad for a complete beginner to start with a digital keyboard with sens keys but not weighted ? I can play a real piano 2-3 times a month with a teacher and I have in plan to buy a real piano in 1-2 years. I will join your training course soon. Thank you !
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ionut! A digital keyboard without weighted keys is not ideal - but you can still make it work if you do your best to apply my detailed technique and sound production recommendations. Generally speaking, the sensations involved in whole-arm action can be learned on any surface (even a table or window sill) - the important thing is attention to detail, focus and consistent practice :). Plus, as a member of our program you will have the possibility to submit video recordings and get feedback - so you will be able to quickly correct any mistakes.

Hi! My KZfaq channel is just the 'tip of the iceberg' of my online teaching :). Here I have 50+ lessons, all of them are very useful, some of them are addressed to beginners (check out the Beginner playlist!) - but they don't form a step-by-step course. That's because 99.9% of my tutorials can be found in the Members Area of PianoCareerAcademy.com - a project to which I dedicate my entire time. As a member of PCA you get instant access to many HUNDREDS of detailed lessons - including the step-by-step Video Course for Beginners (which would be the perfect place to start for you). This Course will help you to develop ALL your piano skills (technique, expression, hearing, reading, theory & analysis, correct practice, pedaling etc.) in a harmonious manner, according to the professional system used in the Russian piano school. Lesson No. 1 is available for free here on KZfaq, and also on my free blog: www.pianocareer.com/piano-practice/nikolaev-russian-piano-school-practice-guide/ I also recommend these free tutorials focused on posture and the basic key attack: www.pianocareer.com/piano-posture/correct-piano-posture/ www.pianocareer.com/piano-sound/correct-piano-key-attack/ You can learn more about my Beginner Course (and the functionality of PCA) by taking a look at answers No. 17 and 1-3 from our FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/). This depends on a lot of factors: your training and skill level, your personality, your goals and dreams, the economical, social and cultural realities of your country/city - and also what type of career you prefer: concert pianist, teacher, ensemble player, accompanist, or a combination of some of these.
