Performance anxiety can often feel overwhelming - but there is a reliable way out! In this video I demonstrate a powerful step-by-step method that will help you to remain calm and confident while preparing for an upcoming event.
In this 'companion' article (which you can read on my free blog) I share 10 additional solutions for minimizing anxiety in a healthy and sustainable way:
www.pianocareer.com/piano-per...
Video highlights:
00:00. Introduction.
00:44. The secret to banishing performance anxiety. A funny recent example from my life.
02:01. Understanding how we are built. The 'flight-or fight' response, attacking tigers... and why our limbic system perceives musical performances as 'dangerous'.
04:04. How this survival mechanism works: anxiety symptoms, and why they do not help us to perform well.
05:06. So how do we beat our primal wiring? It all starts with a change of perspective!
06:11. Being a calm performer is not about learning how to handle 'emotional peaks'. It's about making performance part of our baseline.
07:17. Solutions. The step-by-step training process I recommend for becoming an 'unshakeable' performer:
08:33. Step No. 1: perform the piece for yourself. The difference between practicing and performing.
10:54. Why we need to alternate in-depth practice with 'performing training sessions'. What to do if you can't bring the piece to performance level.
11:56. Step No. 2: record yourself.
12:30. Step No. 3: perform for one person.
13:22. Step No. 4: perform for a small group.
13:44. Step No. 5: perform on stage.
14:48. Step No. 6: perform in important events.
15:38. A useful strategy used by professionals before an important concert or competition.
16:21. Bonus tip.
16:50. Conclusion.

Incredible information! I found it all useful. I am still struggling with my fingers shaking when I play for my teacher! It's been so frustrating! You explained it well.

I enjoyed this tutorial. I started my piano journey in January 2015 by self study with video tutorial and studying a home study course at the age of 62. I had my first performance in church on Sunday morning in December and I felt nervous? Hands sweating, leg jumping and pounding heart beat. I tried to explain to family that I was having an anxiety attack and all I got was relax. Thank you for verifying for me that “performance-anxiety is real. I wasn’t ready for this performance but because I was committed to play “Silent Night” for our Sunday morning hymn I felt compelled to continue. I shall include your tips as I continue my piano journey at the age of 70. My main takeaway is that a performance is not a practice and it is allowing the music to flow through you as a conduit. Also understanding that if the piece I chose is too difficult I should focus on a less complicated piece and just enjoy and play in the flow. Thank you

Biggest takeaway is that by taking small steps, we are coaching the limbic system that performing is not a life and death situation. Step by step, what is an alert, run and hide response becomes normal and safe.

When I was a child and a teenager my efforts at the piano were surrounded by ideas like “either you have it or you won’t get it”, very poisonous for who dreams to be a music performer … I am glad to have come across much later some wonderful piano professionals and generous spirits- not so often though and quite too late probably- as you certainly are! Thanks and blessings!

My biggest take away is all things in life should be purposeful… through purpose we find peace … I play the piano for residents and friends with Alzheimer’s and dementia … thus is my audience and this is my purpose … I love performing for them

You are amazing, thank you for sharing knowledge..I'm not classically trained, or I don't play classical, more jazzy bass and extensions over American songbook and 80s pop at moment..would the course you provide benefit me? 😊
@pianocareer
@pianocareer 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! 😊 A serious classical foundation can be extremely beneficial for all musicians - including jazz/rock/pop players. However, you need to be willing to dedicate time (and passion) to it in order to benefit from it. PianoCareerAcademy offers its members an enormous library of tutorials and courses (not just one course) - but, of course, most of them are focused on classical playing and professional piano concepts. Yes, you can still benefit from my tutorials even if you never play one classical piece - but it would be 100 times more useful if you learned the exact pieces I teach (instead of simply assimilating the main ideas). Still, as a member of PCA, you will have lots of learning freedom: a) you can either follow one (or several) step-by-step Courses that will help you to set a serious foundation and develop a rounded technical/expressive/artistic skillset; b) or you can cherry-pick stand-alone tutorials that interest you at a given time (being focused on general principles that apply to all music [not just classical piano]). c) or you can combine these two approaches (which is what I recommend). Here are three resources that will help you to make an informed choice: 1. Our FAQ page [ www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs ] contains my detailed replies to the most frequent questions we get from prospective members - including in-depth descriptions of how everything works. 2. In this free article I talk about the life-changing benefits of classical piano training [ www.pianocareer.com/piano-history-and-philosophy/benefits-learning-classical-music/ ]. 3. On my free blog (PianoCareer.com) you can find 50+ free sample videos and articles that will give you a better 'taste' of what the paid membership has to offer. You will find direct links to all of them on our Archive page: www.pianocareer.com/archives/ And, of course, here on my KZfaq channel you will find many other free videos that you can benefit from 😇.
