First, this is awesome! Second, is this the only video available for this beautiful piece of history? Third, provided you could get the rights, etc, Simply Red's Fairground would be apt. ;) Hard to believe that this would have been a fairground/carnival attraction in its own right a century ago. Show it to kids today and they probably wouldn't fully appreciate it. But then again, they might on here. You Sir, are an excellent custodian of this awesome piece of history.

I'd be the same. But then again, you would have to be extremely resourceful with that organ - not as if you could buy spare parts for it >.< I do admit to being stereotypical in the previous comment. I'm sure if I had a big enough sample size, I would more than likely be surprised at the results. I mean, the fact this video has nearly 4M views means something.

this device was 70 years old when bohemian rhapsody was released, and we're watching this 45 years after that. purely in terms of timeline, this like someone in 2060 playing despacito on one of the first synthesizers of the 1950's...

No it will be like someone playing Bohemian Rhapsody in 2060 lol. Despacito is dead now, it won't have remotely the same impact as Bohemian Rhapsody, isn't nearly as good, and it's a shame on youtube it has a few billion more views even though I'm pretty sure it's not as well known (then again, there's several different videos of Bohemian Rhapsody).

Chris Hamilton they weren’t likening despacito to bohemian rhapsody’s excellence. They were purely referencing the timeline, so they used a popular song that was created around this time. Obviously despacito isn’t as absolutely amazing as bohemian rhapsody

What’s even cooler is when you realize this organ is basically a 100+ year old analogue binary computer. You put a file in and it runs a program based upon which places have a hole (1) or no hole (0).

@perciusmandate
@perciusmandate 6 жыл бұрын
Jesus Adfasd: This organ is a textbook example of a deterministic Turing machine. A DTM reads a symbol off of a program tape and writes a corresponding symbol based upon what it has read. In a DTM, each read symbol X will have a single write symbol output Y. Similarly, this organ reads unique notes off of a program written onto a long sheet of paper as either a hole (1) or no hole (0). Based upon the finite number of unique combinations of 1 and 0, the organ is theoretically capable of being scaled to produce an equally finite number of unique output signals as musical notes. Each unique combination of 1 and 0 “read” from the sheet can be “written” as a unique musical note or chord. Given input signal X, the organ will always output note Y and, barring mechanical failure of the organ or the music sheet, will never output random notes for a given, established read symbol. Now, what this machine is not that a modern electronic computer is, is a universal Turing machine. A UTM can simulate any other given Turing machine, be they DTM or NTM, and thus theoretically solve any mathematical problem. This organ, even with its binary language, could be made into a UTM. It would need 15 different modes however, rather than this organ’s single mode. In fact, there are real world examples of them right here on KZfaq. Just search “mechanical Turing machine”.

@Logan-zp8bi
@Logan-zp8bi Жыл бұрын
Modern printers are actually designed to fail or seem crummy or outdated. Its because the technology has been perfected enough it can't be improved much further, and one printer can last decades. Because of this printer companies need to keep afloat some how so most stop making cartridges or intentionally design the printer to die when the warranty expires. Oddly this has led people to buy printers from the 80s, 90s, 2000s.

For the ones who are curious!: This is a 81 key Marenghi dance organ. Dance organs were used in the beggining of the XX Century in dance halls, where people would pay for the organ to play a song to dance (they usually were short songs so people would pay more lol). Dance organs are different from fairground organs and band organs, but they are all mechanical organs. Dance organs are usually less loud and way bigger, while fairground organs and band organs (Like the one you see in carousels) are designed to be very loud, so they can mask the sound of the machinery and people voices. Some mechanical organs play with music books (like the one you saw at the beggining of the video), others play with rolls (similar to pianollas) and others have been addapted in modern times to play MIDI from a computer or cellphone! Besides Marenghi, other manufacturers of mechanical organs are: -Gavioli, Wurlitzer, Artizan, Hooghuys, Frati, Debrüder, DECAP, Verbeek and many more ^^

The composer portraits along the top are: Wagner, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven, Peter Benoit, and Jan Blockx. The last two were important Flemish composers of the late 19th cent. Their inclusion is curious, however, not because of their relative obscurity, but because the organ is of Parisian origin.

I remember another video of a huge church organ that had been refurbished and had a midi input that the master organist was aware of but not it's potential. The guest had a midi file of Bohemian Rhapsody and they played it. It was magnificent. Freddy Mercury would have been proud.

For anyone wondering: the six people in the top panels depict a couple famous composers. From left to right: 1. Richard Wagner: a very famous 19th century composer, famous for his opera's 2. Franz Liszt: predominantly known for his known for his piano works. 3. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: one of the most famous composers of all time 4. Ludwig van Beethoven: one of the most famous composers of all time 5. Peter Benoit: one of the most important composers of Flanders, Belgium. He composed a lot of Flemish oratoria and songs and was the founding father of the Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp 6. Jan Blocx: He was also a contemporary of Peter Benoit and became the director of the Flemish Music Conservatory after Benoit's death While all six are outstanding composers in their own right, I find it interesting to see that Peter Benoit and Jan Blockx made it onto the organ, as they aren't quite well known today, especially not outside of Flanders!

I bet Freddy never thought when he was writing this song, years after his death, people would be playing it, on an organ that was crafted before his birth.

Not just amazingly well designed, but also has such amazing craftmenship to it. it just looks so beautiful. Good job to whoever maintained this machine for 100 years. Also great job translating Boheamian Rhapsody onto the sheet.

I'm a lifelong fan of these machines since the first one I saw on the Flying Horses at Savin Rock, West Haven, Ct in 1963. I think the arrangement is brilliant! It raise the majesty of this magnificent machine to a whole new level and perhaps arranging songs from the 60's and 70's will bring new fans and new attention to these marvels of sound and mechanics.
