Piano chords are everything in music! They really are the foundation of it all. But when you hear the word "chord", typically you would think of the guitar. Right? Well in this lesson, you are going to learn how knowing your chords can help you with your sight reading skills as well as your ability to improvise with songs that you hear on the radio.
Let's find out what makes chords so powerful, how you can use them to better understand the piano, and how understanding them in-depth will make you a better player.

@@PianoteOfficial You are entirely welcome. This one should be your FLAGSHIP video (I think), and available (perhaps) very early on, in your course(s)... Talk about motivating, clearing messy, complicated stuff up quickly, and providing a clear vision & purpose of all the necessary "hard work" that will certainly follow... It provides an IMMEDIATE clear and USEABLE "glide path" into a student's learning, instead of the customary, long arduous "rote learning" grind so prevalent elsewhere (in other courses). These immediate tools and insights are....priceless. You could re-introduce these concepts, later in the course, in more detail, maybe, and with more examples/demos. When I was a teenager, I created "my own" version of Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata by basically doing what you did here - approaching it not exactly as written but rather a serious of chords. I played this on my keyboard using the strings tone and it sounded very dramatic.

Thank you for this!!! 💕 I used to struggle with memorizing songs, relying strictly on their sheet music. Then several months ago I was using a guitar app and had an Aha moment when I realized I could learn any song as long as I knew the chords. It has opened up my musical world! 🙏🏻 🎹 🎶

Over 50 years I have been playing the piano and CLINK, with one video I can now finally do the one thing I have always wanted to do ... play a favorite song by ear and get the chording put in properly! When I started to have lessons with real piano teacher, she showed me how to make this connection between chords and notes on the sheet. It was like opening my eyes for the first time. That inspired my to create my own yt channel and teach others what I"ve learned. so feel free to check it out :)

I play by ear and can only play from chords on my keyboard. I can't read music at all except note by note. If anyone (or anything ) distracts me, it wipes me out. I love music (naturally) but never had the opportunity to have lessons to learn how to play properly. (we barely had enough for food let alone music lessons growing up). These videos are a great help. I'm in my 70's now, but I still like to learn.

Wow! I'm a late starting, self teacher. Found this so eye opening. After watching it I went back and reanalysed a piece I'm learning. I had marked out the key signature and obvious major chords and inversions already. This time I worked harder to mark out every chord which had me pick up the 7th chords, suspended inversions, and major chords made up from treble and bass clef notes. End result everything in the piece is made up of chords / broken chords. Looking forward to improving my analysis going forward to improve my sight reading and speed of learning new pieces. I have watched videos with variations of what you said before, but they didn't make it as simple and clear as you have here! Thank you 😊

this is super big. I've started relearning piano a few months ago and started labeling notes on my sheet music as chords instead of individual notes whenever they form a broken chord.

Learn to play, Omar. You won’t regret it and kick yourself for not playing sooner. I started taking lessons at age 60. I am 63 now. It is something I always wanted to do since I was age 10. The half-hour lessons cost me $1,000 per year and I bought a used Roland keyboard for $200. I don’t play for anyone. I play for myself. And I know I will never be as good as Lisa…but I don’t care and no one else will care either. Good luck. Follow your instincts.

Not only are most songs/pieces based on chords and chord progressions, harmonies are as well. In most cases the harmonies will be based on the scales of the notes above the root notes of the chords. For example, a C chord has the notes C-E-G, C is the root note so often times the harmonies will be base on E or G.

The definition of melody is "the up and down motion of notes". The definition of *harmony* is "the up and down motion of *chords".*
