Such a thorough review! I'm interested in a the chord focus; throughout childhood I played the violin so chords and the bass clef are my weak points in starting the piano. I'll add in scale/arpeggio work and a technique book as you recommend. Thank you!

Thanks for your in-depth reviews. My thoughts: I have the Bastien Piano Basics Technic Level 3 book. If you ignore the names and pictures of the exercises (aimed at kids) they are good, and challenging enough I have to say. I took piano back up about a month ago at 47yoa, last plaid to a lower end intermediate level when I was 13. I have the Alfred Level one method book. I like the chord focus because my husband is an advanced guitarist and I would like to have a clue what he is talking about, I would also like to play in church at some point. I was trained in a more classical fashion back in 1990.

As an adult that hadnt learnt since I was a child even though I played Trumpet in an orchestra, I really enjoyed these 2 books but found the presentation though friendly and clear is a bit "childish" and wasnt exactly sure what the learning progression was that I was doing. However I found them harder than I expected even on what had seemed simple pieces which was a bit of a shock having played some simple classical before. I came to your page because at the end of book 2 it was completely unclear where to go next and also its hard to be sure what level you had attained. I will now go to book 3b/4 in Alfreds and may work through Piano adventures too. Your other videos have been really helpful for ideas and Ive got lots of options now and am enjoying Burgmuller. Your best tip of all was that sight reading should be 3 levels down from playing as I was feeling useless for not being able to sight read at the level I could play, so thanks for that too. All in all Im glad I did them but the abrupt end is annoying.

Thanks for posting. I'm working out of adult piano adventures book two and Alfred's group piano method right now. I am also using Bastien's sight reading and theory lessons books as supplements. I was considering buying the Bastien adult method but after watching your video I think I'll just stick with Faber and Alfred. Thanks again I really enjoy your book reviews.

I'm glad that I came across this site. I have my first adult piano student in more than ten years. She already has her piano and book, Bastien Piano for Adults Bk1. What ideas do you have to guide me into getting back into the routine of teaching piano?

Thanks for the review. Where are your thoughts on using several method books at once?

I'm using the Bastien book but in between my teacher has had me using the 4 book sets. She also adds her on sheet of Scales with chords and arpeggios. I started at 72 and lessons are from September to May. I am not good at site reading. What would you suggest would help with that and next as I am close to finishing this. I also have some pop music and hymns.

My teacher (church based teacher) started me with this book (learnt music/piano as adult) I liked the book; but I didn’t love the playing pieces because I never played any “real music” (classical pieces as you mentioned). Dislike: •I didn’t learn how to play classical pieces. •I still have to work through note reading when I play pieces from other books bc I’m not familiar with how pieces would sound (I have quit the teacher and trying to learn solo now).

So are there no teacher accompaniments for the pieces in this book at all?

Do you have recommendations on truly “classical” method books? How about the one by Schott?

What about the bastien books for children as an adult. They come in a set of 4 books

It's just as good but the progression is much slower and the material is more childish.

@@pianotips2623 oh wow thank you for the reply. Specifically you mentioned the technique in the adult not having a thorough breakdown and I was wondering if with the children’s version since it is a separate book entirely that maybe it is more detailed as well as the theory book and the performance book. Any feedback is greatly appreciated

I appreciate your "critiques." I am an adult, beginning Alfred's Adult All-in-One, level 2. At the moment, I don't have a teacher for one on one instruction/guidance/reinforcement. I'm afraid I give up too easily and don't develop self-confidence .
