This is awesome! I’m a piano teacher and the most surprising thing for myself is how much prep time I spend outside of teaching lessons to prepare and plan. Your videos are always so helpful you’ve really inspired my career!

It is my first year of learning piano and I am 67 years old since May. Decided to embark on a forced approach exploiting a program of forceing myself to use chord progression of which I have 22 of which most need to be extended to actually go anywhere but probably half of them are usable as is. So far so good and am probably a few months in. Almost getting a flow though there is a bit of brain jam at times but do expect that to happen until my brain kicks in. Actually I got to admit I love the challenge and the hardship of forcing my hands to do something different from eachother and all. At times there is flow and always each time can feel something of the potential going to happen. At the same time am working from an app for sight reading and also some ear training which I will have more time for as my brain starts to kick on these chord progessions of which I change keys each day and wrote out each chord progression in each key. It takes a lot of work but me thinks piano keyboard has advantages over other insturments when it comes to digital music sequenceing software even for beats. Piano keyboard is something I wanted to master from a long time back but guitar was always easier because of portability. I just love making music and creating originals. Musical phrases come easily but creating a complete peice of music takes a lot of work if no base of music theory. I got to say that the learning experience is very inspiring as long as there is progress even if it is slow.

Very helpful. I'm just starting my journey with Alfred 's. I'm 44. I wanted to be very thorough and master everything. But I'll take your advice and go through it faster.

Hey Allysia very nice video, I just started getting better at recognizing notes on staff, playing keyboard without looking down, and started getting better at ear playing. Not great but getting better.

I live in Australia. Just to clarify that the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) is not a school, it’s an independent organisation. Do also look at ANZCA as they have a different focus to AMEB.

I agree. Perfecting every piece in my beginners book would take a year but I would still be at level 1 by then. On occasion I like to work on a Clementi Sonatina or one piece from the Anna Magdalena Notebook and, although a struggle, this approach pulls up my ability to read much faster. Alysia is right. Listen to your teacher!

i learn now for a 3 months with alfreds ans adventures for adults. and i'm started now to learn grade 1 music and i enjoy to learn piano. every day i try to play 1 hour to 1 hour ans half. keep,making this videos i learn a lot of it thx

many people are told or were told that they are tone deaf, and can never be a musician on any level can you do a video putting your perspective on that way of thinking. please pretty please do a video on that for all of us that suffered for that negativity

I really didn't want to fall into that trap of learning pieces I want to play and thats it. I really appreciate that I need a foundation before I can move on. While sometimes playing London Bridge for the 15th time today isn't as interesting as playing songs I like, I can understand the skills that I am learning now can only benefit me later.

Awesome video Allysia! I feel like the same principle -- better learn more pieces to 80% than few pieces to perfection -- would apply to higher levels as well (unless you're studying them for an exam). I started practicing more pieces recently and I feel faster progress. My level is about RCM 4-ish (studied piano as a child and returned to it 20 years later). What do you think?

It was interesting. We learn another way. For us, it is important to study pieces for ideal performance. Although it is impossible. But for your adult, the piano practice is another way. I dream my father can play the piano like me. He understands music but can not play any instruments. I study at Gnessin Music School in Moscow.

I am a jazz guitarist of many decades trying to learn some piano skills (that's the short story). I understand that there's a similar grading system for jazz. That would be really helpful for me as I understand music theory and reading; having completed only a first semester piano course, I have almost zero technique. It seems that's a big difference from students who don't understand time, reading, etc. Any tips on that perspective would be appreciated.

What about structuring lessons according to personality type? I'm an INFJ so would want to learn more holistically, knowing the why concurrently with the how. Improv being more important to me than perfect recitation, however appreciating that every aspect is beneficial to the whole.

i want to play minuet in g, i'm practicing piano 2-3 hrs a day for 3 weeks already, i'm on page 60 of alfred's, i want to get to level 1 not in a year but in 6-8 months! though i play guitar for much longer so it's kinda a little bit easier for me to study piano cause i know a lot of theory, rhythms, chords, scales etc. but i feel like piano is my thing, guitar is great but i just love piano sound! thanks for the vids, you have beautiful eyes!

I was wondering when is the best time to move on from subject to subject. For example my approach is if I managed to play the piece 2 times in a row I move on to the next subject/piece.. Is there a better approach? What is your recommendation Thanks 🌹

I had started playing piano around a year and a half ago with a teacher, which went great. I can play some of Chopin's preludes (albeit the easier ones, 4, 15, and 20), and am starting on Mozart Fantasia in D minor. While that's all well and great, I have recently found that it is just impossible for me to play something simple like Bach Chorale BWV 514, which is pretty humiliating to me. Is there anything I can do to rectify this or should I just continue on with more difficult pieces that I do well on? (This is a question for anyone, I just need some advice lol)

For many years, I've been playing songs on the piano with basic chords, based upon my knowledge of guitar. I'm now starting to learn the more classical approach, using books and KZfaq. My right hand is damaged (my pinky is near-dead and my ring finger has limited function). Do you have any advice or tips for me? Thanks.

When we are progressing through the adult method books (e.g. Piano Adventures), each unit teaches us a concept, then gives us an etude on that concept to practice. How long should we spend on the etudes in each of those units?

I’m 53, have always wanted to learn an instrument- piano, harmonica, drums, guitar saxophone, trumpet, ($$$$$ spent)would take lessons, practice hours, for months and months, and still feel like I’ve learned nothing more than parts, riffs, scales. I know ad- hoc learning isn’t beneficial. Would love to see it all laid out and how it connects. Very discouraging thinking the desire for expression is there, the love of music is there but it won’t gel, or do instructors “forget” one method of teaching doesn’t fit all?

Where can we learn about these grade levels?

Alfred's level 3 Adult book has Beethoven's 1st movement moonlight sonata and Bach's Toccata in D and even Chopin pieces. So that would be about grade 5, why would you stop at the level 2 book and go back to grade 1? Just doesn't make sense

I have a sticker on every white key with bass or treble clef, and the name of the note. Since I played clarinet in high school 50 years ago I am comfortable with the treble clef but need help with finding bass notes. Nothing wrong with training wheels on a bicycle!

Please can you research about Arno Babajanyan, Aram khatchaturyan, and Tigran Mansuryan. They are Armenian piano players during the soviet Armenia Era and one of the most loved piano players of all 15 states of CCCP. Can you research and talk about them like you did for other famous piano players. Don't get me wrong I don't say my nation is great. No no not that. It's just their pieces are beautiful. Armenian music is sweet.

I have 0 of motivation to play piano anymore did 3 months of lessons quit and then played 10 minutes a day for a year and I have learned nothing just beginning of lots of pieces and that's it

I got to sonata op 49 no 2 in 9 months which is 8 grade on RCM, I'm learning with a teacher so it's easier, i believe anyone can if they dedicate the time

Lol ... Maybe i would have signed up had one of my comments not been removed. I don't know why...because i was asking advice and not paying or something? Whatever, just thought that kind of funny that you blantanly neglect new viewers, then turn around and ask them to pay you for something that's probably elementary to begin with. My advice to everyone ... Learn this beginner stuff on your own...is not hard. These online types just want your money. Then after you learn your scales and chords, perhaps maybe even your arpegios, then go get intermediate lessons or something. Give your teacher something to work with. I need lessons at this point and I'm sure that some of these things are good like pianote, They didn't ignore me and remove my comment. They actually responded to me and helped me.....just saying. Good luck! This is my first year learning. When i asked my question I didn't know anything but now i know all my major scales and a few chords, with a few songs and music theory i practice everyday.
