Picard finally regains consciousness on board the Enterprise and Riker brings him a surprise which they found while dismantling the alien probe. Enjoy the bittersweet finale of this fantastic episode!
This is the last of three clips from “The Inner Light” (episode 25 from TNG’s majestic Season 5), which is rightly recognised as one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
A comment on another Trekkie clip in the channel made me rewatch this episode and, boy oh boy, it is always so wonderful to watch! Sir Patrick Stewart’s performance is mainly what makes this episode - and all TNG - so compelling and inspiring. No character needs to shout or swear, or display senseless overdramatic reactions. I wish contemporary television had more content like this.
Check also part 1 and 2 via the links below:
• Picard plays the flute...
• Kamin sees his family ...

Without needing to say a word, Picard clutches the flute to his chest, and tells us exactly how much it means to him. Exceptional acting, exceptional episode.

Another point I should have mentioned in the description is that, from an acting perspective, this could easily be a textbook example of how you master silence on screen--one of the hardest things to do.

The bittersweet melody of a long dead world. And yet, it has a vibrant life and meaning to him. It isn't a folk tune, it's a remnant of a life. A family. A people. An experience like none other. And perhaps not fully understood by any being short of a Q. Such power, joy, and loss...all in a tiny flute.

I have started to appreciate TNG more and more as I see modern TV. There are a lot of important episodes that raise important questions.

The Borg ripped Picard's humanity away from him. The Enterprise got him back, but he never quite fully recovered. Until he was given the memories of life on that world.

He got to live a full life with a wife and kids. And I think when he comes back, he isn’t happy with where is life is. And that flute is the only thing he has that reminds him of what he could have had. One of the best episode ever.

No, if he was truly unhappy, he would have quit right now as captain and gotten married and had kids. But he didn’t. He’s happy with his life as captain. He made a choice to be a family man because that was his only choice in the simulation. And I’m sure he’s great full for the experience of having a family but in the end he still stuck with star fleet.

I know it’s a TV prop, and it’s complete make believe, but it would’ve been cool if it was an actual , working, flute.

This might seem a bit obvious, but you can probably google a working replica for a not-too-crazy price, and then learn to play it. People make working Legend of Zelda Ocarinas, why not working Ressikan flutes?

I realize it really wasn't the point of the episode, lol, BUT you would think a civilization with the kind of technology to build a probe that would still be functional a millennia in the future (not to mention the kind of technology to allow one to literally experience a digital realm with no realization you were doing so) could have saved their civilization digitally. Which is to say, to store their conscience in a protected electronic vault...obviously this all hinges on how intact the planet would be after the nova itself, etc.
@andreabindolini7452

Obviously the entire probe affair is a totally implausible nonsense, even for Star Trek standards. The probe is solely a mere plot device. We are all called to put aside this obvious lack of logic to fully enjoy what the episode really want to tell.
@Deepingmind

The thing is that we don't know if this is a true digital download or just a programmed recreation. If they lacked FTL ability then their star going nova means that even if they could travel around their system they still wouldn't be safe. This is a probe after all that needed thousands of years to reach out far enough to be noticed. On the other hand, we don't know for sure if they are truly gone, a selected few could have survived somehow somewhere and what we are seeing is a product of those survivors from an outsiders point of view.

I think this was the culmination of their entire species' scientific and technological might. Once they realized as a species there would be no saving themselves, the species dedicated itself to this single relic that might let them be remembered again someday.

I get that the film industry want films to be as real life as possible. But all capitans of all star trek saga not end in a happy ending is not how real life is. There are happy ending in some heroes. Why not in this series? Why all most end like the Alamo? Let the Capitan and his crew have a normal ending. Hope is a nice thing to create in a live full of sad ends. Bring back the happy ending of the past. Please.

It's not just about the ending per se. It's about stupid, over-dramatic, brainless characterisation. TV-shows do not generally seek to elicit an intelligent or inspirational reaction in the audience. They just speak try to give them the illusion of emotions, because that sells. It's like the J.J. Abrams' "Lost" craze multiplied x1000. It's mystery boxes full of empty, dumb, superficial emotions.
