ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE JANUARY 11, 2021 ON PATREON. And speaking of Patreon, did you know that 8 out of 10 doctors in Northern Ireland agree that the best preventative measure you can take for good health include diet, exercise and becoming a Patron of Addressing Gettysburg? Of course you didn't know that. I just made it up and, while it may not be scientifically true, we all know it to be true. It's just that no one has been able to prove it in a study yet. So, help the scientists gather data for our health. Join today / addressinggettysburg
While with the Park Service, Scott Hartwig wrote an essay entitled "High Water Mark Heroes, Myth and Memory." It covers the piece of ground that includes landmarks such as "The Angle" and "The Copse of Trees" and answers some questions about just where Pickett's and Pettigrew's divisions were heading on July 3, 1863. Was their objective the Copse of Trees or Zeigler's Grove? What about Cemetery Hill? Scott joins us to dispell the myths that have popped up over the years since the battle of Gettysburg. There's a lot more detail in the article and we recommend you read it before you listen. npshistory.com/series/symposia...

Hearing Scott Hartwig declare that when the classrooms opened at the "Gettysburg Visitor Center, were for learning. Not for making money." It made me have more respect for the Man. That speaks real volumes of both his leadership & answerability/accountability. By golly Scott Hartwig has to go down in history as one of the all time greatest Supervisor of historians Gettysburg National Military Park has ever been blessed to have. Can't wait to start reading his prodigious book titled "To Antietam Creek."

I loved this episode! Any recommendations on what to read to learn more about John Bachelder and how the monuments came to be, were designed, etc?

All your work is wonderful. One pet peeve: I have been going to Gettysburg for nearly 60 years. It has always been Getties burg, not Get tiss burg. I never heard that pronunciation by anyone until relatively recently. Why the change, I wonder?

This is a debate as old as the whiskers on Abe Lincoln’s chin. Natives whose families have been here for generations tend to call it “Gettiss”. The rest of the world calls it “Getteez”

There are few things as boring as trying to listen to historians drone on about the history of other historians.

Except reading comments from idiots who don't appreciate the importance of historiography who have to tell the world about their shortcomings. That is definitely more boring.😮
