There at the end, Dad would have said "We're pickin' corn by candle light". We filled the crib for the cows feed. But to get the feed, we'd have to shovel the corn into the old truck. Take it to the Elevator where they had a cable lift to dump, as there was no hoist on the 53 Chevy 1/2 ton step side. Then they ground cob and all with some minerals and other stuff per Dad's recipe. Bag it up into 100 pound burlap bags. We'd put the bags in the truck (the bed was full, front to back and stacked 2 high) and we'd be good for month. It's hard to believe, but I miss that. I miss Dad more.

Picking corn I remember it well dad had a 2 row Minneapolis Moline Picker that we pulled with a D 2 cat after we opened the field with the Massey Harris 44 we done about 55 acres a year and switched over to shell corn in 1973 with the John Deere 3300 combine

Picked a lot of corn with a new idea 1 row picker just like that. Late 70’s early 80’s. Anywhere from 80 to 110 acres every year

my dad wore out a 226, 2-227's and a237. All 2 row mounted before he wore out. real tough to handle the noise and dust.

Just think, if you had a two row picker with a sheller on it you'd have the same thing as a combine to work your corn. But it looks like a nice set up though. Dave D.

I helped my dad pick corn by hand when I was probably 8 to 10 years old. Ford tractor pulling a box wagon. It was then shoveled in a corn crib with a steel scoop shovel before the aluminum ones came out. He had a Davis West combination grinder made in Wichita that I still have. It sat next to the corn crib and was powered by the 1944 Ford tractor. He never owned a corn picker. He borrowed a snapper from a neighbor a few times. Most of his corn went on ensilage. Later on he had a Allis Chalmers model 90 pull type Combine that he put a Hesston corn head on. The combine did a great job.

That brings back memories when I was a teenager shoveling corn to the back of a wagon on a hillside farm

A 1-row corn picker? Wow! Really makes you appreciate how hard past generations had to work to make a living at farming. I hope the cows appreciate your efforts.

I was born in 66 and remember my grandpa Werner had a 2 row Gehl picking corn behind the house "he lost the end of his ring finger to that picker" and he had to corn cribs by the cow yard by our house for storage. Great video brought back some memories!

Nice looking old 720 there, Brandon. I have a distinct memory of when I was about 5 years old in 1963 when I rode in the grain wagon that Dad was pulling behind his Farmall 560 with a 2-row mounted corn picker. Somehow I got a corn kernel in my nose and it freaked me out. LOL. That was about the last year Dad ran Farmall's before he switched to John Deere in 1964 when he bought his first brand new JD 4020 Diesel and a gently used JD 70 Diesel and from then on it was JD all the way. From what I understand those 560's had problems with the rear ends going out on them. TBH, I think our country would be better off if we had never changed from the old ways of farming because the small family farms was destroyed by large scale and corporate farming.

Could you imagine picking a hundred acres like that and then putting it in a corn crib wow and that’s why I’m glad things have changed over the years lol thanks for sharing

Great capture of past harvesting techniques. Having the real lights on the 620 at the end shows what harvesting was like back then when it took some concentration to see and the whole work area is not lit like a football field.

That looked like fun. Ground looked alittle soft in places. That darn corn stalk got in our way,lol, but that's ok. Sure brought back some memories though.

Speaking of tractor issues my 39 B clutch won't cam over into drive position after a total rebuild . Tried to adjust it every was from Sunday but no good. Got any ideas? Love the picking video...

I haven't raised calves for many years, but I still have the one row Wood Brothers picker, just like the one Dad used. I also have the CA Allis he used to pull the picker with, the Monkey Wards barge box that was his only wagon, and the Monkey Wards 13 inch "Grain Buster" hammermill he used to grind all his feed with. I nay need a different flat belt, if I ever hook the CA up to the MW grinder again some day 😉

I use a 227 mounted picker on my JD 60

Your picker works faster then I thought it would. What breed of cattle are you looking at? Brandon is their a little fly wheel cover, that pops off? Is their an adapter that bolts to the steering wheel to hand start your 620?

Are you gonna raise some cows...so you can send them off to freezer camp each year?? Yummy

My Grandpa had a New Idea that looks the same until 1964 that he pulled behind his 420, then bought a john deere 101 and used it until he quit picking corn to feed the hogs in the early 80's . (by then he was mounting the picker on the 63' 2010 he traded for in 68')

I'm 66 and I can remember standing in the yard probably back in the early 60s up in Northern Minnesota and hearing the sounds of those old 2 cylinder John deeres off in the distance then when I was in the seventh grade I plowed with an old 720 for a farmer, 3 bottom plow, maybe that's why I'm half deaf today.

Your equipment runs Great! Most Farmers know breakdowns are going to happen. Your Equipment is Only AS Good AS The Mechanic which is most of the time, The Family Normally Helps If You Have Kids that r old enough to start out on a tractor. It's sad that Farmers work Harder Maintaining Equipment, and taking care of the Many chores that have to be done even in the Winter time. There's no Shortage of things needing repair, taking care of the Livestock Etcetera! Farmers work the Hardest for the Least amount of Money & Return. Our Farmers deserve more than this!!!
