Hey Booktube! Lucky me for the last one week one shelf reading vlog of the month, I got to choose the shelf I would be reading books from! I picked sci-fi (of course!) and found a new series to start. Just what I needed :P

Stephen King 😂. His women are always traumatized, he really likes writing sociopathic men with anger issues. And if I had a penny for every one of his special/gifted/magic kids…. (I say this as someone who bought a Kindle version of IT because I literally read the covers off my paperback 😅😂)

Sarah J Maas, absolutely. Her male characters are always the same person - they may have different names and different hair colors, but beside that, they are always the same person. It doesn't matter if you only look within one book or whether you look at several series.

I like John Scalzi a lot. Yes, the humor is always there and this is exactly what I need. But the books are quite divers anyway. I recommend „The Collapsing Empire“ with many strong female characters and a lot of political string-pulling in a SF world, not millitary at all. Or „Lock in“ which is a mix of dystopian, criminal Investigation and SF. I also love his Short Story „Slow Time between Stars“, this one even without a funny character! Please give John Scalzi another try! Love your vlogs!

Idk if you've read the book and while it is different than the show (Penelope has a younger sister for example in the book and Colin finds out she's Whistledown first, not Eloise), but they get together early-ish in the book too and the second half is all the Whistledown drama, so my guess is that the show is going to take a similar approach.

My fire alarms would go off constantly for seemingly no reason, and we figured out it was the cat hair/dander in the air. It didn't matter how often I dusted, vacuumed or ran the wash, it still would go off. We decided to go for a less sensitive fire alarm and that solved the problem.

To Say Nothing of the Dog is hilarious, I hope you'll love it one day. My favourite of John Scalzi is Fuzzy Nation, it's definitely worth a read (it's a courtcase, big corporation vs innocent alien, and there's a dog named Carl). Re The Forever War quotes: Yeah, sometimes those earlier sci-fi writers just can't help themselves. I love the movie Predestination (Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook), which is based on a Heinlein short story. Interesting, twisty, time travel story, but the only thing women could apply to be in the space program? Space whores. Highly intelligent, strong, resilient, virginal space whores. Doesn't ruin the whole movie for me, but that section of it is just so cringey! Luckily, and this isn't too much of a spoiler, Sarah Snook's character doesn't make it into the space whore program.
