I'm so disappointed that Violet Evergarden Movie wasn't in the Best Film department. It was one of the movies that I watched this year that left such an impact on me. Just everything about this movie was such a good way to end a wonderful series and it was just good seeing KyoAni back again, better than ever.

Mushoku was robbed of this AOTY, at the same time they really wanted to shove wonder egg to the point i'm surprised it didn't appeared in the AOTY nominees. Agreed with most of the categories and especially with the lack of MT, but it's a shame Garnt hasn't watched Fruba Final, some categories he had trouble voting in out of the lack of choices e.g. Best Girl would have been soooo straightforward. Mushoku was so good that on the eve of my father's funeral I bought the light novel. I have never bought one before, not even a manga. I have been all anime since the seventies. I finished it that night. To say it was anime of the year doesn't quite say it all.

For the Japanese VA I voted for Aoi Yuki as Kumoko as she absolutely carried that show. Yes the anime ran out of funding towards the end but her VA kept me going back. Honestly most of these categories were super difficult to vote for and I'm really hoping that all of the big popular shows don't hog all the limelight as it has been an amazing year for anime. I kind of wish they had one for best anime original as we were choke full of amazing original shows. Edit Sonny boy should have been best soundtrack as when they were running through that void and the OP started I almost started crying.

Kageki shoujo is the most overlooked anime of this year. I was reluctant to watch it at first but I was amazed by the end. The soundtrack and the animation art style was already impressive enough but the character development really shone in this one. They put better character development in one episode than even 50 episodes of Naruto could have ever hoped to put in xD I really wish more people gave it a chance, it’s a great show!

Kageki Shoujo is wonderful! Has one of the best casts of the year, some of the best singular episodes, and realistically deals with a lot of heavy issues with great care. It's not an idol/performing girls anime. The real snub is Girlfriend Girlfriend not being up for Best Comedy.

Fruits Basket: The Final SHOULD win best drama and romance. It's leagues beyond the other nominations in those categories. Also kinda sad it wasn't nominated as AotY as the final season was straight up amazing.

The "rant" regarding Mushoku Tensei not being nominated is just pure gold. Easily the best show of the year, and I am would be hard pressed to find anything from 2010 onwards that I actually prefer over it. Probably not nominated as Crunchy roll didn't have streaming rights (that's my GUESS at the very least).

Jujutsu Kaisen op 2 sequence rocks! I watch it very often. It's not particularly original but it's super polished and like a lot of the rest of the show reminds me of the best of times with old shounen like Bleach. I hope they similarly keep up great openings & endings

Mushoku tensei deserves anime of the year atleast from 5 anime I watched this year lol but the animation and character development is just so good

I think you had it right when you said "I can understand where some people may have had an issue with some elements of that show." Mushoku Tensei has an interesting premise and the preview videos look stunning, but knowing what I do about the plot I cannot even give the show a chance. Those 'some elements' are a hard-no for me, and I imagine there are others who feel the same way too. Possibly enough to discount it from being anime of the year, even. That's the problem with something like 'anime of the year', you have to find things that appeal to such a wide audience. Shows like Mushoku Tensei, which are best summed up as "It's really good, but it has this one specific detail that you might find offensive/repulsive", are a hard sell for that reason: if the show has plot points that instantly drive away a large section of the audience, it just won't have the wide appeal needed to get the nomination. I get it. Several of my favorite shows missed out on awards for the same reason: they were just too niche to get that wide appeal. It does suck to see something you enjoy so much miss out on awards. But there's always next year, and who knows what next year will bring.

I'm still surprised an anime that has 6 seasons and 2 movies is very underated outside Japan. It was names "Natsume Yuujinchou" a slice of life anime with very beautiful writing that even didn't fit with my preference of spice like gigguk but still had an impact on me.

For me Orsted is the best Antagonist this year, when he is introduced I got really scared.

For the JP VA category, I had to vote for Kiyoshi Kobayashi as Daisuke Jigen. It was his final role as the character and has voiced Jigen all the way since Lupin III's Pilot film in 1969, so his inclusion in the category had a lot of sentimental value for me as a Lupin III fan.

Mushoku Tensei really deserves more than what it got.

Seeing so many good anime last year made me remember I had an idea for a series a long time ago. I'll never make it a real project in any way, but I wanted to get the idea out into the world regardless. If anyone wanted to take it, feel more than free to make this into a real story. The main character awakens at the entrance of a church with no memory. The church looks abandoned, and they can't leave. They can only move further into the church, passing through cobwebs and rubble because what else can they do? Along the way they meet a girl who seems to already know who they are, but refuses to explain or answer any questions. She doesn't like MC and scolds or critiques them every chance she gets, giving them a back-and-forth bickering dynamic. The two explore further through the church, making it to underground tunnels and other areas like abandoned schools and homes. All throughout this journey, the girl stays as his companion despite clearly not enjoying their presence, and MC gains fragments of their memory as their journey goes on. Memories of a troubled life. The people they encounter on their journey bring these memories from within, bringing out the worst in their human side and forcing them into horrible ethical dilemmas and conflicts that they want nothing to do with. Situations where there is no right answer, only wrong ones. And eventually, MC would know the truth. They would remember their life, how they were bullied and met a girl who "saved" them. They grew closer, fell in love, and got married in that same church that they started their journey in. But as their married life continued, the depression and mental problems stemming from that childhood abuse turned them into a worse person, one that their partner couldn't love anymore. After an uncomfortable divorce, MC turned to drink and videogames to escape. They shut their life down and stayed inside their home. In their own broken psyche, they transported themselves into a "virtual" dreamlike world after playing too many games on night, a world where they blocked out all the horrors of their life, giving themselves amnesia. The world they arrived in was one created by their own mind, and as such, everything inside it was made by them. The church they woke up in was the one they married in, the happiest day of their life. The girl companion had been the girl they married. The people they met along the way had been manifestations of the people they had met in their life, and their problems MC was faced in within the dream were like the problems they faced in real life. Every time they met somebody in that place, it would trigger some memory or another. But through this world, they learned to become a better person. They learned to overcome their self loathing and pity, how to be brave and move on. It was a story of growth and self-love, filled with psychological troubles and horror elements created from a person's twisted psyche, as well as tender moments of reflection where MC got to grow and become a better person without realizing it.

All of the nominations are quite incredible. Mushoku Tensei seems to have thankfully gotten a lot of nominations but seems like it could’ve gotten a few more in the other categories. I’m surprised how much the wonder egg has been nominated for considering apparently people kept bashing it as not being that good. I’m definitely going to have to check it out now. It’s embarrassing really how many of these series I can’t honestly vote for as I haven’t seen all of them right to the end. Including AoT and The Wonder Egg. Miss Kobayashi‘s Dragon Maid definitely deserved more nominations considering how wonderful it was and how long so many of us waited for it. Good it’s here though. Cool that you gave a shout out to Shadow House. I haven’t finished that series yet but definitely like its originality so far. The Vampire cosmonauts series definitely deserved more attention as well. Massively underappreciated series considering the actual heart and originality that was clearly actually put into it. I think it was just the first few episodes in its gradual development and alt-historical references put some of the more action packed and hard-core drama lovers off a bit. For films I’ve seen almost all of them and it is definitely hard to choose based on so many factors as I absolutely loved Josee. Surprised you didn’t see yourself really as it was an absolute masterpiece that I went and saw in cinemas TWICE. I guess that makes sense violet Evergarden isn’t on the list, as it technically came out in Japan at the end of the year before last, 2020. Plus there were many many other beautiful films that came out in 2021, but a lot of them unfortunately haven’t received all of their international releases yet, so I guess it makes sense that they wouldn’t be a part of these awards. In the end, I think Evangelion 3.0+1.1 definitely gets my vote. For all the other categories though, don’t think I can even give an absolute definitive answer with some of the series I still have yet to watch thanks to all the hype built up around them. Just going to have to vote for what I know I like based on what I’ve just seen and try and catch up with the other series from last year as best I can before they finish the final episodes.

Personally I watched Vivy more for the writing and songs than action, so I voted for JJK for the creativity on displaying the powers and fights but overall most of our votes match. I don’t see the results being as unpredictable as last year.

Im really surprised Re:Zero barely got any nominations and the only nomination it even got was wrong (Roswaal is the actual antagonist). Some of the choices were acceptable but seriously there are too many WEP and JJK nominations and didn’t leave the space for more shows especially Mushoku Tensei. And honestly I think 86 was affected by the 2 missing episodes because otherwise it’s incredible! The direction is insane! The art direction too. The characters, the music, the plot... I feel it’s underrated.

Maybe finish Dynazenon if you liked Gridman? It is able to explore the group as a whole where Gridman had a lot less group stuff, I would say it definitely differentiated itself and tell different stories, and also there’s the Gridman X Dynazenon movie coming out

I already know Mushoku Tensei is not going to be nominated or chosen for being too "controversial"... Can't argue against that, but I'll be damned if such a great anime isn't given at least a little recognition from the awards! So many good series this past year that had genuinely passion and love put into them, but amongst all of those 10s rose this one, which (I've starting reading the light novels since the show ended) really does pay attention to the nuances and little details of a story and world that bring immersion and enjoyment to a whole new level. Also I didn't know you had this channel so I'm subbing now xD

Idk if it was the implication of what was happening, or the animation, but I thought the action when the scouts invade Marley was pretty awesome. I also think the show has the best OP of the year. The piano, chanting, and visuals just made it feel really eerie and unsettling, which I both enjoyed and found extremely fitting for the season

Vivy’s fight scenes felt more fresh (no time wasting on inner monologues and interrupting Elizabeth’s speech), fluid, and cooler than JJK imo especially with her fight against Yugo

New Anime Fan, it’s been a year since my indoctrination into the anime cult. Mushoku Tensei was one of first shows I watched, and first Isekai. And to this day nothing really competes to the world building and animation it’s been able to deliver. I am surprised it isn’t talked about more, only issue I have with it is some of the creepy fan service it attempts, but even with that it’s kept to a minimum and I would put it in my top favorite shows. It’s my most watched show as well, I’ve seen it like 4 times, twice in dub and sub. Only other show I can compare is some of the SAO in terms of impressions it leaves.

How did Mushoku and To your eternity NOT get nominated for AOTY at all.

Re:Zero Season 2 Part 2 had similar level of love, passion, and detail from Mushoku Tensei. It just so happens that Mushoku had a bit more going on in the story, while ReZero definitely took their time and it was very slow paced. I remember in the past 2 years the anime community has been graced with so many endings, that just felt satisfying. Heaven's Feel, OreGairu Kan, Eva 3.0 + 1, Fruit's Basket, and Re:Zero. I know the story of Re:Zero isn't really over, and there are plenty of volumes left. But the way they ended the 2nd season just left me feeling satisfied. It was slow, and heartwarming. You saw the smiles they all fought hard to protect.
