Break Habits Not Horses

3 жыл бұрын

Our Devil's Garden Mustangs have arrived all the way from Northern California! This herd is known for their exceptional temperaments and friendly demeanor, and they tend to be large and stocky for wild horses, typically ranging anywhere from 13.3-16hh of solid muscle. They can be good beginner mustangs and great trail mounts.
This pickup was arranged by private individuals and was not affiliated with the US Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management. All horses were already adopted or purchased prior to this event and we paid to have them transported from the Double Devil Corrals in Alturas, CA to Northern Florida. The USFS does not have the funding or resources available to the BLM, so does not host satellite adoptions.
If you are interested in adopting a Devil's Garden horse, some saddle trained horses occasionally become available through Extreme Mustang Makeover events, or you can view ungentled horses for sale on the Double Devil Corral's facebook page. We will have trained horses available to the right people, so be sure to follow Break Habits Not Horses on facebook.

In the late 1960's my dad bought a two year old mustang from one of the Montana roundups. Completely wild. Dad tamed her and trained her and rode her for more than twenty-five years. Without a doubt, the smartest, most caring horse I ever knew. He had her bred one time, that foal turned out to be a real nice horse, but not nearly as nice as her mother.

I live on a 100 acre outback property in western NSW Australia, and when I attend these auctions in Australia, I buy as many as I can and take them home and set them free to roam my property. I’m not interested in making money or selling them to some person who I don’t know how they might end up treating them or else. I hate seeing a horse in a pen and tied with ropes. I let them graze and keep a eye on those that might need vetenary help.

@@BreakHabitsNotHorses if you look into the early 1700s and beyond you can find some interesting history of the bloodstock that was around that area then. Cold bloods to work fields, hot bloods for cattle work and racing, stock and Spanish breeds for status and leisure. I've heard Morgan and Andalusian blood is common.

I was wondering if those horses were drugged coming off that trailer all stumbling like they were drunk or maybe just getting their land legs back after bracing in the trailer so long. Their bellies look a little pinched, too. Then I realized they were coming all the way from California!! That's a long haul. Take a while just for their tummies to settle. Beautiful ponies.
@BreakHabitsNotHorses
@BreakHabitsNotHorses 3 жыл бұрын
They were not drugged, just very very tired. They probably had not slept for a few days. They loaded on the trailer Monday afternoon and arrived Thursday morning. The hauler took great care of them and stopped often to make sure they got water and hay, and their rig was climate-controlled, but they were understandably still a little stressed. Our guys were on the ground resting quite a bit for the first three days or so.

Its very tiring on any horse to travel a long distance as they have to balance themselves constantly so imagine being scared and at every move of the trailer adjusting yourself to not fall,i have always when a horse was hauled to the rescue we had, let the horses rest and get used to surroundings ,they can be sore after the ride.(I miss it so much-live in town now and had horses all my life.)

@10nycav
@10nycav 2 жыл бұрын
@@shootingstarshorsemanshipm338 Thanks! They sure look like they have a common ancestry with the Canadian horse, and sounds like the temperament is similar, too. Interestingly, in the 1800s there were two recognized types of wild and Indian horses: the "Indian Pony," found in Canada and the northern tier of states; with a stockier build and calmer temperament; and the "Mustang," a lighter-built, "hotter" horse of Spanish stock. It's nice to see that the Northern Indian Pony type still persists here and there. I think they are under-appreciated because they don't have the fancy colors of the Spanish mustang. BLM programs often focus on color since that's more marketable. But the old European "draft pony" are "up to weight" and train up easily. Thanks for getting the word out and giving these great horses a chance.

@@deanfirnatine7814 rather than large draft breeds, DG's usually come up with a mix of pony draft breeds and larger warmbloods in their DNA.
