The prices at this auction were not what we expected! Everything was selling so low! Total suprise!

I know this isn’t a popular opinion but I’d like to see some cutting back on the breeding and production of foals. One of the problems we have now, just like cats and dogs, is overpopulation.

@@GolfMissouri Naw, a LOT of horses, even young horses, go to slaughter because of the foal pipeline. Old horses who cannot be ridden are often thrown away. Kathlyn is correct. The culture around horses has got to change away from breeding and towards adoption just as with cats and dogs. Personally think it also needs to shift to encourage keeping horses for their entire lives, since most people would agree it'd be weird af to sell your beloved dog after a few years or once they're older. But regardless breeding is a massive problem in this industry and directly contributes to the massive amounts of horse slaughter and abandonment going on right now.

@leavrhovec4992
@leavrhovec4992 Жыл бұрын
Actually that's not true that mares only care for the foals for six months. While the foals may NURSE for four to six months, they need to stay with their mother for at least a year in order to be able to learn how to be a horse. In the wild, the mare usually doesn't have foals every single year like the broodmares are often forced to do. The foals stay with the herd for two years. The colts then join other young colts outside the herd and the fillies either join some other group or remain with their mother. If they stay together, they retain a life long bond. And even if they seperate, they are able to recognize each other even if they havent seen each other for years. People are seriously underestimating the terrible effect they have on the mental development of foals when they "wean" them of the mares. Which, why would you do that anyway? It's not like the foal is nursing from you, it's nursing from its mother and it needs its mother, not you.

I enjoyed watching this and I could cry about the prices. Here is Germany you cannot get any foal of American types under 6.500 Euro and for a broken in grown horse they start at around 14.000 Euros 😢 it's crazy what horses cost here. A tiny pony you could pick up for 350 Euros, now you can't get one for und 1.200 Euros. Vet prices have gone up by 30% and you have to pay a fee of 40 Dollars just for the vet to get out of their cars, called a house visit bill. A round bale of hay cost 68 Dollars which is a cheap price for me, I've paid double that before. I am surprised that people even want to keep horses here. To have them in a full star stable where they get looked after cost 450 Dollars a month 😮 it seems cheaper in America, or am I wrong?

I enjoyed your video even though the sale was so long ago. You mention knowing blood lines of Fox Trotters and that made me laugh because all I know is Thoroughbred Racehorses, Quarter Horses, Arabs, and never paid any attention to what you raise until now. Where I'm from a trainer was tarred and feathered and run out of town in the 70s for practices upon the horses considered cruel and it left them harmed and scarred. I'm glad to see the horses get a look over before the show. Also to get a better understanding of what type of showing is being performed. You can find bad and good in types of equestrian events. Of course the spot light is usually on the tracks because the amount of money involved brings media attention. It is nice to take a look back at people just enjoying the love and caring for horses. Remembering shows when I grew up and the people along the way. I also figured something was different in the way you measure hands. One of your horses I figured was about 15.2 hands but you said something much shorter that I would consider a pony. Or cob. So 4 inches a hand up to the withers if my old noggin is remembering right. Old or not I would of bid that first horse, at 4'11 it would of been a good little horse for me. Then again I saw a couple of horses I liked including the one you did not buy when you bought the one your training because she was bigger. That other one had good confirmation and a pretty head with a look in her eyes that was special.

Most foals are weaned at around 6 months. The amount of milk the mare produces drops dramatically by then, so the filly would be getting most of her nutrition from solid food. Some leave fillies in with their moms to fully wean off, but if you intend on selling, they really need to be physically separated so the filly can develop her own autonomous personality and not be so stressed at separation. Having multiple foals to wean off at the same time helps. And helps mom, too. You saw how the mare was calling for the filly when separated in the barn alley.

So much difference. In your country, horses don't sale as there are so many, in mine there's a real lack of horses and the price never ends to go up and up ! Stabbles struggle to find their cavalry. But here, breeding isn't lucrative anymore, everything's expensive : food, hay, vet, taxes, and even if horses price went up it still doesn't cover the cost.

Hopefully, they allow the foal to stay with mom until she is ready. The interesting thing is that foals lock on pretty quick to other horses and people. There's a youtube channel that patrols their mountain land weekly in peak foaling season. To help in the best way they can wild foals who were left behind, due to various stressors. (Like stallion fights, falling, forgetful mamas, defects, injuries etc...)

WEll, um, the mare is long in the pastern, she won't be a good riding mare when she starts to get older in my opinion, but for now, she seems sound and healthy enough for a nice mare.

Unless he was gelded it would end up breeding back its own Dam. That close of inbreeding brings problems and should be avoided with horses. That is why they probably split the lot. I feel bad for them too. Really even with any livestock you know the second they are born how much time they have together.

@@alycewich4472 Thanks for clearing that up. I thought they said it was a colt. I could never let go of horses. Even if they made pasture ornament status. At the track if someone claimed one I did not want claimed by them I'd probably end up in the clink 😀

@Lynne2106 - Normally foals are weaned by 6 months. This filly (girl) was 9 months of age. So while upsetting in the short term, she'll be fine.

COULD YOU, SOMETIME, EXPLAIN THE REASON FOR SO MANY NO SALES ON YOUR KZfaq? PRICE TOO LOW? WHAT? WHY LIST IF OWNERS DON'T REALLY WANT TO SELL???
@maxbarile5216
@maxbarile5216 Жыл бұрын
The price was too low for the owner to make a profit, so they decided to no sale them. The owners want to sell their horses but in many cases, they also need to turn a profit.

I don’t like horse auctions. They’re inhumane. Go to a horse auction and see all the foundered horses, the foundered ponies, the old animals that people don’t want. I dare you to leave with dry eyes. Since spaying mares isn’t feasible, I don’t know what the solution to this overbreeding is, but if I was to go back to a sale looking for a foxtrotter, the ONLY sale I’d go to is the MFTHBA sale at Ava where the horses being offered are not someone else’s discards.
