I did this with a jar same size, miracle grow cactus blend, a small layer of perlite, and outback sand you get at petco for bearded dragons. Popped some swords, a moss ball, and bonsai lotus in it then topped it off with an in jar pathos and some snails I found in a local creek. That thing is crystal clear and grows like crazy. Plants are constantly pearling. I though about adding a few Lil nano fish but I'm gonna give it a few more months just to be extra cautious but from the looks of it, it thrives better than any actual aquarium I've ever had

Fascinating, the main drawback for me is where to get the selection of plants and as to what total cost, eg having just bought 3 parrot feather plants for my barrel pond offline, they were 3 of the skiniest shortest single strand plants(?) that cost £6! I am eager to use some type of similar design as I have just odered 16 medaka eggs and now I think I'm stumped. it is still quite cold here in the uk and these will be my first ever attempt with rice fish and I have no indoor set up thus the fascination with yours. I would be exceptionally grateful for any advice or ideas. Great videos by the way, you certainly know your aquatics! kind regards, Tony.👍

I have one that's over 2 years old now, it has a few tiny cherry shrimp that survive on whatever is in it. I haven't taken anything or added anything but water. It's closed except for a 3mm hole in the lid.

Btw bc there's no heat, what temp are you keeping the jar at? I might try this

Sorry if this is a silly question but how do you control the amount of snails? with water changes I suppose it would be possible to just suck some out with a hose but trying to net them would spoil the scape?

May I ask for some advice? When I had a 60L fish tank last year, some bladder snails would appear off plants we would buy for it, but they would start to lay eggs and then there would be lots of snails (which is fine) but a lot of what I believe was their poop at the bottom of the tank!😭 I had soil for the plants as well as some gravel, but the poop was always noticeable as it would pile up. Is there any way I can prevent this in the future? Some sort of natural way of reducing the amount or a way for it to compose into the soil? Any help would be very appreciated, thank you!!
