After owning hamsters for over 7 years I decided it is finally time to try out an Ikea Detolf cage! I'm also going to be setting it up a bit different than my past cages, and taking some inspiration from the more naturalistic German type cages. Instead of shoving it all into one video I decided to split it up into a series so I can go into a bit more detail. Here's part 4 :)

Yay, part 4 is here. Just a small suggestion. I'd remove the floor of the multi chamber house, usually hamsters pee in those houses and the floor will get really gross quickly. By removing it the hamster will simply pee into the bedding and it can dig out of the house if it wants to.

Pro tip: if you hammer the floor of the multy-chamber hide it comes off pretty easily, leaving the hamster free to dig and burrow further down in the bedding

Aww nice these are back again. I used to have hampsters as a kid. I kept loosing them under the bath if they got out and had to put food down to entice them out! I think all small animals are cute though. Whats going in there? I have a lil dwarf bunny. Just thought I'd comment. Recently got a channel so nice to comment now :). Steph,Karen and Binky bun

Hey! I love this channel but you do need to add more burrow bedding. You only have about 4-5 inches. If it was 8-9 inches it would be about 3/4 full to the top and maybe a little more. I have the ikea detolf so I would know!!! :) Overall great cage set up!!!

I think I'm obsessed with the Ikea detolf lol, I rewatch every video of the Ikea detolf. Because i'm getting it at the end of this month for my syrian hamster :)
@cevansdecespedes
@cevansdecespedes 4 жыл бұрын
Is it a female syrian? Cause they don’t really bode well with detolfs. A male would probably get away with it, but detolfs are generally better suited to dwarfs because the shape of the cage isn’t very well-suited. Imagine you were trapped in a long corridor, yeah its very long, but it still feels very small
@cevansdecespedes
@cevansdecespedes 4 жыл бұрын
There are lots of cases of syrians showing stress in detolfs. Also they have very limited height so it’s hard to incorporate a 12 inch wheel/deep bedding.

@cevansdecespedes 4 жыл бұрын
Amary Roels a male syrian would probably be happy with 850sq inches + but for a female it’s recommended to have at least 1000sq inches, normally it’s best to DIY a cage of that size since none are really available on the market - lots of people use white, smooth wood for DIY cages - you may of heard if the IKEA linnmon cage, its basically made from 3 table tops and a sheet of glass/perspex! There are a few videos here on yt of people making them :) Victoria Raechel has a vid that would probably give you an idea about DIY cages, I recommend checking it out, and also the ‘hamster hideout’ forum has loads of advice on these things! ❤️

Personally I have a leopard gecko and generally people in the community say to not use it because it’s really dry and can cause respiratory problems so I think it would go the same for hamsters? I have no idea, I don’t even use coconut fiber for my gecko. I just bought Zilla Jungle Mix for my gecko and will be using it once he is switched to his new tank. It’s a fir spagnum peat moss blend, it’s really soft and holds moisture well if you mist it but will stay dry and only slightly damp (like just barely but isn’t really dry like coconut fiber) if that’s how you want it. Would totally recommend over coconut fibers like Eco Earth.

The cage is diyed and its an ikea detolf however I would recommend looking up hamster bin cage on youtube because they are really affordable and spacious (450 square inches is the bare minimum for hamsters when it comes to the cage size) NEVER buy one of those tiny expensive cages from the pet store they are way too small and inhumane

hello! i really need an answer i’m worried about my hamster, so i got him just 3 days ago, he has been sneezing a lot. i use kaytee clean and cozy as the bedding, so could it be the dust that’s making him sneeze? he seems healthy otherwise, eating good, drinking water, active, etc. i’m not sure what to do, if i should change the bedding, or could it be something worse (like an illness)?

I have a question about mice, so I want to make a 110qt bin and I want to use ecoearth as a primary substrate (it will be dry so not damp or wet) and my concern is that ecoearth can be a bit dusty and of course mice are prone to respiratory infections. What’s your take on this? Can I use ecoeart or should I just stick to safe substrates (paper based fleece aspen etc)
