Pickup Tong Tutorial - No Power Hammer Used!

I've gotten some guff in the past about making beginner tong tutorials and then proceeding to use a power hammer. My shop is currently under construction and out of power so I thought now would be the perfect time to make another tong tutorial completely by hand. Follow along as I make a set of small pickup tongs completely from scratch and draw them out entirely on my anvil. Can it be done? Can I do it? Yes I can. Do I miss my power hammer? Yes I do!
These small but mighty pickup tongs are great for holding onto small hammers on end or even square stock. Ironically, I may have made these by hand but they are one of my favorite tongs to use while working at the power hammer.

Well done video Jayce! Pickup tongs are on my list of tools to make as soon as the weather cools off enough to fire the forge up. That sure is a good looking apprentice you have helping you. I like that "playpen" too! 😉😊

Very nice! I like these, gonna make some next timei don't have anything major coming up. Right now I'm using a pair of the "hammer" pick up tongs. The ones that are almost triangle shaped. They work pretty well. But yeah. Recently I just made a some slot Jaws. I was using "blade" tongs, but I got tires of only haveing them, and regular flat bills. Take care!

Ya they are handy to have around - I have a saying, you can never have too many tongs! I have a whole playlist on different tongs if you're hankering to make more! I love to make tongs but it has been so hot here I've haven't got to do as many as I like. Thanks for stopping by!

Who repaired the edges of your anvil and what techniques did they use if you know? If the repair is strong, can use the edge as a more aggressive fuller than the horn for drawing out the reigns. And, I think that once all the surface is full of humps and bumps, then going to the flat side of the hammer on the flat face works better than the horn and rounding side of the hammer, switching back and forth between them (two round surfaces, then two flat) works better than a single technique by itself. But, I'm just a rTongs. Only a couple of summers experience, I watched this to learn how to make the Jaws for the tongs.

I had both of my anvils redone at a professional shop. I didn't put as much money into this one as my main shop anvil so the edges on this anvil are definitely softer. I'm not sure what techniques they used. I just demonstrated the one technique in this video to try to keep it simple and straightforward for someone just learning. There are definitely a lot of different methods for drawing out and for the jaws, I hope you were able to take something away from this video! At the end of the day there are so many different ways to do everything you've got to just pick what works best for you - that's what I do. Thanks for watching!

Great job Jayce!! I really am in envy for you having an "Apprentice"!!!,,,LOL. I think I may try and make a pair or 12 as it's definitely a different twist on picker uppers that I have. Usually use the wolf jaws mainly. Thanx~

Thanks Chuck! If you are envious of this little guy, wait until my next video where my twin daughters do some forging, it's pretty fun to be able to teach them something I enjoy. These are definitely a handy little tong, I like to use them at the power hammer.

Just wondering about how long does it take you to forge a pair of tongs by hand? It takes me a while still have yet to time myself thanks for sharing godbless and good health. I guess I should have finished the video first you said two and a half hours thanks again😅.

Great job on those very handy tongs. I was wondering how long it took in real time to make the tongs, 2.5 hrs not to bad. Could you make mention of how you decide the positioning of the rivet in the Boss? I enjoy the great explanation of your process. Thank you for sharing Jayce. The little guy is almost ready for a hammer.

Thanks Randy, he'll be a good hammer operator. The position of the rivet is a great suggestion, thank you - I will cover that in my next tong video. That's why I had to rasp more on the one side, I got my hole a little off so it put too much material on the inside. Thanks for watching and your always constructive feedback!

Why does everyone think a power hammer is needed now days? I'm an old fart and don't have a power hammer, it just takes a while but there is always other things to do more efficiently when you hammer by hand.

Definitely not necessary, but I do like to use one in my day to day work because it saves the shoulders and makes things go faster.
