Re-configured Gramophone soundbox which uses a Piezo crystal element instead of a mechanical Diaphragm to enable electrical sound reproduction. Amazing performance from this simple technology

I'm honestly impressed with the sound quality! Never thought that piezo can sound so nice, always thought that electromagnet pickups are the only good ones.

Sounds good. To get rid of the resonances, I loaded the diaphragm with bike inner tube rubber strips. Flattens the response and sounded better.

Inner tube rubber is natural so that's a great idea !

Superb! I use a bakelite HMV pickup arm on one of my gramophones.

Today I thought to using piezo for making gramophone and checked it and saw that it already had been made😊

And continues to be: the cartridge in most cheaper record players, up to and including the little suitcase ones being sold now (2024), operate on the piezo principle; they're just referred to as "crystal" pickups, as opposed to "moving coil" or "moving magnet" types in more expensive cartridge/players.

Is the record after or before 1925?

I'm planning something similar so I can play Diamond Discs on my VV-X though I think I'll put a second tonearm next to the stock one. I have a diamond stylus on a regular needle shank which should do the trick plus a couple old off brand reproducers to scavenge for parts.

be careful with the diamond tips for 78's , at a certain weight of a soundbox they tend to kill shellac records very quickly. Plain steel needles or thorn types (Burmese colour needles) are a better option

@@martinh3904 I have no intention of using the diamond stylus on 78s, only on Edison disc records. The tracking weight will be pretty light and I'm planning for an adjustable counterweight. I'll make a video one day when it's done.

would like to hear it when you do :)

How do you attatch the piezo pickup? I bought a dozen of those piezo triggers to do just that. I guess I'l have to experiment.

Astonishingly good! Especially for such a primitive-seeming approach, but I guess the rubber damping around the wafer is important. Impressive! What amplification is being used here - line or phono input, and any EQ?

a guitar amp with 4 band eq recorded with an add-on camera mic not via a cable , thanks

hey I was wondering what amplifier is suitable?

Great job! I'm thinking about doing something similar and have a few questions if you don't mind: Did you use any resistors? How did you connect it to the line input? What diameter is the piezo disc, you used? Sorry for all the questions, I'm not very good woth electrical stuff like this... Anyways - thanks in advance!

Size depends on what you are fitting it to & it's just 2 shielded wires out, totally primitive & direct into a guitar amplifier . As all soundboxes, the diaphragm must not touch the inside metal face but sit between a natural rubber baffle or it will sound horrible.

@@martinh3904 Thanks! Could I glue the Piezo disc on an old diaphraghm(with the middle cut out, except for a small ridge that the glue can sit on) - well dampened of course
