Pigs might be the ultimate tool on our off the grid homestead. They help us develop fertile garden soil, dig up grass roots, vines, and eat pest larva. They have empowered us to build a big organic no-till garden, clear out old barbed wire fencing and protect the vegetable garden from deer and other predators. Pig farming is a great way to raise meat and utilize farm animals for work on your farm. And moving them frequently in a rotational electric fencing setup is a great way to reduce feed costs and get cheap pig feed.

Great video. It’s nice to see pigs doing what they do naturally

You jump right into the subject, which I find refreshing. Did you employ goats as well? One of the things I am gathering from many homesteaders, is to do goats then pigs (though some do goats and pigs together), then chickens to deal with all the manure. Pigs keeping the coyotes away is sort of a new one for me, but if it works, it works. Maybe I would not need the guardian dogs to go with the setup. How much additional feed per pig per week did you find yourself providing?

The Curmudgeon I would love to get some goats in there to better clear out the poison Ivey at browse height, but our fencing is not adequate for keeping goats in at this point. We feed these two pigs a combination of GMO free swine feed and expired trail mix (from the feed store): about 2 pounds per day.

Do they not go after poison ivy too much? I have tons of that! Hoping to get pigs to help with that and other weeds in the land!

@@Trakehner20 From the research I've been doing, it seems the goats get the poison ivy from about a foot and a half up, and the pigs go after the roots.

I am in the research/planning phase right now. What size (length) netting and how many hogs would you recommend to concentrate the work load.We have tons of berry bramble/canes and vines here in NW Arkansas. I have the same old fence lines that you seem to have that need clearing out not to mention all the rocks....so many rocks on 20 acres. We only need about a third or less of that cleared so we figure small sections at a time with pigs then followed by goats and chickens.
@HeirloomBuilders
@HeirloomBuilders Жыл бұрын
We use 2 sections that are 50 ft long to make a square. 2 pigs will need to be moved about every 5 days. 5 pigs could do the same job in 2 days. You’ll get a feel for timing once you see how the pigs do on your land. It may be better to have longer fencing sections depending on the land you need to move them through and how many pigs you’ll have.

hey folks.... thanks for the video - we are thinking of getting 2 pigs to start off clearing a small area of forest. The ground is so uneven and full of brush, do you have an issue with the portable electric fence grounding out on the brush?
@HeirloomBuilders
@HeirloomBuilders Жыл бұрын
Yes, you’ll need to clear a path for the fence. Sometimes that’s the biggest part of rotational grazing pigs in the woods

It depends on how much food there is on the ground, and how much water and shade you have, but generally we’ve been doing about 10 sq feet per pig per day.

I am vegan and want to incorporate a couple of rescue pigs similar to what you are doing. Would you say they economically earn their keep? without them having to end up as food? I want to let my pigs develop small ponds and swales with solar pumped water, and actively include their droppings with the other animals,bio char, grass, ground branches, etc to make soil.
@HeirloomBuilders
@HeirloomBuilders 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! They definitely earn their keep even if you don’t plan to eat them. We use them mostly for the disturbance and fertility. They are fun to work with, but don’t do 100% of the work. You’ll be able to dig the same size pond faster than a pig, but the energy required from you will depend on whether or not you’re hauling buckets of water or have a hose to keep them focused on digging wallows in the areas you want them to. I’ve thought about orienting the electric fencing in long garden path rows so they berm up raised beds, and then broadfork and sheet mulch the berms to make easy raised beds. Have fun!

@@PepeDeezNutz It's kind of relevant to the question considering most people doing this would sell or use them as meat. Obviously that impacts the economics as well since the pigs would live much longer and thus need lifelong feed and vet care.

I have around 7 acres im clearing. So do you think pigs are better than goats to clear the underbrush? Should I use both in the same confinement space?
@HeirloomBuilders
@HeirloomBuilders 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what the underbrush is. If you have a bunch of vines that need to be rooted up and rocks that need to be dig up and collected, pigs will be your best. Goats and sheep will browse/clear the stuff above ground much better than pigs. if it’s super dense underbrush, it may come back pretty quickly after goats unless the soil and roots are disturbed. Use goats first to knock back the stuff above ground and bring the pigs in afterward to do the final rooting. Then over seed the bare ground after pigs.

Another question, can goats and pigs go in the same pin? I have around 8 acres and wanted to just let them free range on it
@HeirloomBuilders
@HeirloomBuilders 4 жыл бұрын
Pigs can be pretty aggressive towards goats (which is dangerous for babies). But I would get some electric net fencing to contain the pigs and concentrate their impact on areas that you need the most rooting and rock removal. I would avoid giving pigs too much free range if you want to get the most benefit from them as a working animal.

Pigs disturb the soil and eat many things, but hogs do not put rocks into piles and things like that. I raise heritage Red Wattles on pasture. I have raised pigs my whole life. I believe in pigs being raised outside and being raise natural, but you should know more about them when you are making a video about them and talking people into buying them. People need to study up and know what they are getting into. Pigs have needs, can get sick, and people need to know what to look for, and know how to take care of them. You just don't throw them out in a pen with food and water.
