Join me on a trip to San Carlos as I fix a Pilatus PC-12NG that experienced a rudder trim runaway. The culprit was the trim adapter. Stick around until the end for a surprise.

Love the edit of you swinging the camera around from looking out the window, perfect cut to looking out the door on your arrival at Saint Carlos! That is exactly what you should do with an entire PC-12 to yourself...pushupsI didn't know the seats turned to face each other. That is something to do when you aren't flying alone...make your neighbor super uncomfortable by turning and staring out their window. Or better yet, turn and face them but just read your book like it is completely normal and acceptable to be doing so while facing them... Love you brother. Chat to you soon...

What was the ops check to verify the fix ? Is this considered Rll in your maintenance system ? I assume you hold a position that allows you to be your own inspector . I loved the road trips and they tested your ability to "MacGyver" things to get the job done when you're away from home base without maintenance stands and shop equipment.

Hi James re: trim runaway issue, how frequently does that occur? Being non deferred maintenance I gather it's a very serious issue. Are there other redundancies in place to override the trim if that module fails?
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
+GonePro27 great question. There are two different ways that I know of to disable the system in the event of a runaway. One is the trim interrupt switch the other is pulling the system circuit breaker. These methods would be listed in the pilots quick reference handbook

I never trusted electric trim at take off, cautious any time at low altitude due to possible run away trim. I'd pop the circuit breaker or use the on-off switch if available, then turn it on latter in the flight if using the autopilot.

James, I always had this idea that before you remove-to-replace any module from the plane, don't you have to disconnect the plane from any power source to prevent any short or long term electrical damages?
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
As long as you follow the manual procedures you should be fine. Some tasks call out disconnecting the batteries (like replacing MAU cards) but in this case just pulling circuit breakers to isolate the system was enough.
@gabejasonjackson
@gabejasonjackson 7 жыл бұрын
So just curious: I suppose (since as pilots we for some reason don't get access to the maintenance manual) there are 2 normally open relays in that box. one that gets a signal to command right rudder, and one that gets a signal to command left rudder. How can a trim runaway actually happen if they are both NO relays? Only reason I could see is if a) the device sending the signal keeps sending the signal for some reason, or b) if the contacts of the relay actually melted closed (forgive me, I have no idea what is in the box..). Thanks for the great videos as usual - would have been very interested in the Operational test though! ;)
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
I look in the wiring diagram next time I work and see if I can answer your question. As for your two reasonings I would agree either is possible however since the issue was corrected by changing the box reason a) can be ruled out

So there is no manual (cable) connection between the cockpit and the rudder trim? Meaning, in a runway condition I presume the pilots pull the breaker to stop it and then have to continue to fly at whatever rudder trim setting it was at?
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
Correct. On the PC-12NG the trims are all electric. In the event of a runaway you would interrupt the trim and then be left flying the aircraft out of trim. In the case of pitch trim (obviously more critical) there is an alternate trim switch which controls a second trim motor located in the same actuator as the primary motor.

I currently live in Oklahoma and work for the airforce, which is good pay and benefits but working in aviation for the government isnt always enjoyable or interesting in the sence that i dont often get to utilize all of my training. your job at surf looks so much more enjoyable but its difficult to justify a change considering the great pay and benefits i currently receive. all info or advice would be appreciated. thanks.

You dont have to fly on the plane you fix, but you have to sign off the repair. He was just returning home on the plane he fixed. A remove and replace such as this is considered a minor repair and can be signed off by an A&P. A major repair or alteration has to be signed off by an IA which i believe he is as well.

Javier Enrique Traid When I was still a working IA, I always did my best to accompany the owner and fly the first flight out of heavy maintenance and when I had time, after routine minor service/maintenance. As a rule they love it and I got stick time on a variety of aircraft, some of them really cool. That is when I worked for myself and not at an FBO or school. Even at the FBO's I occasionally flew. Atleast half of my flight time over the years was this way even if I couldn't log it all.

Hi i am auto electric tech..how did you blame the trim servo controller? it could be input issue, power supply issue, or servo issue.. like in cars do you use diagnostic scanner for planes.....? Do you use amp clamp for diagnosing electronic problems..? IS Pc-12 has fly by wire systems..plus cables & pulleys. .? I am good at understanding electronic diagrams. .how about you...? How its vital..?
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 3 жыл бұрын
Understanding wiring diagrams and electronic diagnostics is important. In this case the aircraft downloaded a fault file that pointed to the trim adapter. Kinda took the guesswork out of it.

Hopefully your bosses weren't all on your back to get the plane out of there. In the airline, we go AOG on the broken part, but we would find ANY kind of excuse to have the plane fly. MELs, CDLs, NEFs (if that even applies to flight control), pull the breaker and just speed tape the darn thing, as long as it flies somewhere where someone else can fix it. Laziness could also play a factor, but oh well

Management is really great here. Our maintenance is all part 91 which means we are signing off with our licenses. I've never been pressured to sign off a plan that I didn't think was safe to fly. I will leave in a heartbeat if that ever changes

That's where I would have liked to be too. Another pilot stole that seat before I could.

@7:07 What would I do if I had a whole PC12 to myself? Ask for some zero G dives ! As for boring? No way, your office is million times better than mine especially @6:45.

I’m sure you’ve been asked before, but can’t find the answer in comment sections of your videos. What’s the future you’re seeing? Are you going to stay and flourish in your current employer or go airline?

Last year I switched over to flying full time and currently getting ready to upgrade to captain with my new employer Boutique Air on the PC-12. I also started a maintenance company and continue to work as an A&P mechanic on the side.
