Learn what its like to work for Surf Air as I interview mechanics, pilots, parts staff, dispatchers, duty manager and aircraft cleaners. Surf Air is a start up membership airline located in southern California. I work for Surf Air as a Maintenance Training Coordinator and I absolutely love my job. Enjoy!

I'm an aviation student at the University of North Dakota, originally from the Bay Area and Surf Air has always been a company I've wanted to fly for one day. Thanks so much for offering an inside look into the operations, very insightful video!

I had been a lead in my industry for 4 1/2 years. Boy was it different. I took my work home all the time, big mistake. I became grouchy and stressed out. Just went back to becoming a technician again for a little over a year now. I love wrenching. Congrats Vince!

James Sullivan Sweeeeet, Ive been checking my notifications daily for a new video 😂 But thanks man! I'm trying to ace every test and project I get so I can graduate with a 4.0 and so far I'm doing just that! I'm debating trying to see If I could work for surf air when I graduate but I might need to get a couple years of experience under my belt before I do that, But if not then i might man! it looks so fun too work their
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
Historically we've hired people right out of school. Timing is everything though (meaning whether or not we have open positions when you graduate). Personally I prefer to train green guys over experienced ones since the new guys haven't picked up any bad habits yet!

Another great installment from the Surf Air Good Vibes Guru - Nice to see Vince again and offering a broader view of a very unique, successful Aviation Venture. How'd the training manual turn out, did you add a section on "How to keep your Lead Happy"? You and Vince looked pretty comfy in that Cabin Interview (well except for Vince's sunburn or whatever was annoying his back - I know it's not the seats) but no Shawarma? There is a disturbance in the force Master James!
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
+KonaMan62 thanks as always. It's exzema hes scratching. The shawarma factory was closed by our break. Bummed us both out... Haven't made it that far in the training manual, still working on how to keep the new guys on the taxiway
@KonaMan62
@KonaMan62 7 жыл бұрын
ROTFL - Keeping them on the taxiway (with a $5 Million Dollar Aircraft - No Biggie...) That should be your next video - them yanking, turning, pulling on the Yoke for dear life with nothing happening! Ugh for Vince... in addition to having exzema on my hands... I just got the mother-load of Poison Oak this week, haven't had it for years! I was even wiping the sweat from my face with my gloves that had the Oak oil on it and now have the nasty blisters on the side of my face / eyelid and scalp! Always good to see your posts. Overall, what would you say the most (a) memorable and then (b) enjoyable part of your last Vacation?
@JamesSullivans
@JamesSullivans 7 жыл бұрын
I'd say the most memorable was seeing bioluminescence for my first time off the coast of Mar Azul in Cuba. Most enjoyable definitely goes to spending quality uninterrupted time with my bro during some special years of our lives. He is really special and I love seeing the way he views the world and interacts with others. Sorry about the oak... Yikes!

No bother! 18 month = tech (trade) school, 2 yr = associates degree, 4 yr = bachelor's degree. There are also several other options. I'll go into more detail in another video but until then there are several good resources on the internet to keep you busy.

Hey James - thanks for sharing this video! It's very cool to see the "behind the scenes" of #SurfAir. Are all the planes Pilatus PC-12s? Would that mean you need even more specialized certification for a swiss-made plane?

I feel for ya Vince. I became a lead back in 2005, with a regional airline. I started a 2nd shift at that company for the first time. I had 12 people, and only 2 were highly experienced. Did that until 2011. Then I became a lead in 2013 and started a project in Africa. Again, a completely new location to set up, with new crew, and various personalities. Some advice; Schedule your Mx as much as you can. Know you're techs and their strong point/weak points. Try put workers together that compliment each other. (like an engine guy, with an Avi guy), and personalities that compliment each other as well. And lastly, always make sure you paperwork is clean, in order, and complete! Keep your chin up. Good luck.

+xXRevoltShadowsXx whatever gets the job done. I use a variety of tools. I recommend tools with a lifetime warranty because they will wear out/break over time. Also don't buy a tool unless you know you'll use it. A lot of new mechanics go into debt buying tools they don't really need.
