The Wasp and her crime-fighting partner Hank Pym (Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket) have featured in Marvel comics and media for decade - including reinterpretations currently headlining movies in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, a version of this duo inspired by the classic comics joins the Avengers and fights supervillain alongside Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, and others.

Also, their characterization comes from the silver age. That's when the Avengers were at their most iconic. The Bronze Age saw the Avengers become a bunch of D-list characters.

I like to note that Wasp is the only Avenger that stayed on the team throughout the series. Others joined later on, others left due to circumstances. It goes to show how she’s the heart of the team. She’s one of the first people to reach out to the Hulk, Hank when he was at his lowest point, and Cap when he came out of the ice.

Yup! To add a bit of extra info in case anyone else is wondering, Hawkeye never left either but joined late, about midway through the first season. Cap never actually left but was kidnapped by the Skrall for a bit and was taken out of the theme song because of it. So there was an imposter running around on the team while Cap was prisoner. The Skrall invasion saw a lot of team members leave and the only other point that needs to be mentioned is how in a single episode, the entire Avenges roster is seemingly KIA (they weren't really of course) so they were replaced in the theme song by a back-up team.

I guess it’s because the character never became an icon in the public’s eye. When people imagine The Avengers, even grandmas could probably name Captain America, The Hulk, and Spider Man off the top of their heads. But The Wasp? It’s probably much harder to find a layman who could name the character after showing them a picture of her compared to finding someone that could name one of the prior heroes I mentioned. Heck, there were people questioning why Batman wasn’t in the MCU’s Avengers movie, which is sad considering they expect a character (that’s not even owned by Marvel) to appear as an Avenger rather than The Wasp who has been there since it’s inception. imo I think Wasp could’ve flourished as a character if they stuck with the foundation laid out by EMH. Plenty of animated series had significant influence on comic franchises, with Batman’s animated series establishing characters like Harley Quinn and the modern depiction of Mr. Freeze. idk Maybe they could kill off the current MCU Wasp and have another one take their place that’s more in line with EMH’s iteration…

I just realized something about her role in EMH: She's the *tank.* Think about it. Her main power is to get really tiny and shoot mostly in-effectual yet highly annoying beams at people. She also uses insults and sas-mouth to keep enemies occupied. Put simply, she can draw aggro, keep it, and avoid nearly all damage until her team's damage dealers can get around the problem. That's called "being a tank". She's always on the team because everybody knows you don't go on a raid without your tank.

The reason why this iteration of the Wasp is so beloved is because of the same story telling techniques that made the MCU Guardians of the Galaxy so popular. Honesty. A lot of people see comic book culture as inherently silly or childish. "A talking racoon and tree? That's ridiculous." "Yes. Yes it is. I'm well aware of that, now shut up and listen to Bradley Cooper be hilarious." It reminds me of what C.S. Lewis had said. "When I was a young boy, I would hide away and read fairy tales, afraid of being mocked for it. Now that I'm fifty years old, I have cast away all things childish, including my fear of appearing childish. Now, I read fairy tales in the open." Wasp did have a problematic history regarding how women were presented in comics in the early 60's, but we cannot have a real discourse on that until we approach the source material in good faith.

That's the case for a lot of 60s comics the ideas were golden the execution not always perfect but if in good faith we actually adapt their ideas instead of thinking we can do them better we can approach true amazing art not by throwing out ideas the original authors had for these characters but by executing them better than the authors could have at the time

It’s sad that people nowadays, who never read the comics and only seen the MCU movies, whenever they think of Ant-Man and Wasp, it’s the Scott Lang and Hope Van Dye incarnation and not the Hank Pym and Janet Van Dye. Not to say that Scott and Hope are bad characters, but Hank and Janet have so much depth into their characters that the MCU highly overlooked. Plus it’s kinda sad that they were replaced by Black Widow and Hawkeye, when it came to them being two of the founding members of the Avengers, kinda like how Martian Manhunter was replaced by Cyborg when came to him being one of the founding members of the Justice League when dc rebooted into the New52

Now, for the longest time, I wondered what Wasp’s exact purpose in the show was when I first watched it. Sure, she had a unique skill set, in her shrinking powers, but she didn’t seem too knowledgeable with said science, or anything after that. Most either label her as the *really annoying unnecessary character* or the comedic relief. Reading the older, original comics, I can definitely say that Janet Van Dyne’s role was as the “female” of the steam, being a product from the 1960’s and all. But in the updated, modern day EMH era; I can safely say that Wasp’s role is similar to Hawkeye’s in the show: as the relatable, *normal* character that isn’t an expert in science or magic and is what the audience can view themselves in, in a way, which is a way, greater improvement than before. She does go through a character arc in the show, but I won’t go into that, this is already too long. Also the comparisons between Janet and Hope aren’t really fair, ones an original character, and Hope’s character is kinda like Hank’s in EMH- the foil to the other character’s comedic hijinks.

@@PillarofGarbage I see what you mean, but I definitely don’t want all versions of Janet to be aged up and ignored for the new blood like the MCU did, I actually want Janet to appear more as an Avenger. Also, in terms of her character arc, I’ve always assumed that her development in the show was in maturity, as Janet didn’t really “earn” her abilities like the others did, and she needed to learn what it meant to be a hero, over what she thought it would be.

One of my favorite Avengers adaptations ever is the opening scene of "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow". Yes, not the whole movie. Literally just the opening scene, where an old Tony Stark tells the children about the Avengers as if they were the heroes of a mythic tale. That scene somehow manages to make me feel more sense of wonder than the whole MCU ever could. Cap becomes "the Soldier", Iron Man becomes "the Knight", Vision "the Ghost", Black Panther "the King", Wasp "the Fairy"... It really gives you the idea that the Avengers were the Knights of the Round Table of the Marvel Universe. In the MCU, in my opinion, they never really stopped feeling like a superpowered SHIELD strike team. And, to tie back to your video, Ant-Man and the Wasp being replaced by two random SHIELD agents as founding members was a big part of that problem.

The Wasp was probably my favorite character in EMH. It was cool to see a female heroine being the witty smart mouth for a change and get all the one liners like Spidey , Torch and Ice Man, even though she wasn't one of the power houses. There wasn't really a female heroine from Marvel and DC who did that in the mainstream media , besides maybe 90s She-Hulk and 90s Rogue. In Japan they seemed to choose Wasp to be the female face of the Avengers for their Animes instead of Widow. In Disk Wars and Future Avengers the Big 5 are the usual 4 : Iron Man , Thor , Cap , Hulk and Wasp was chosen to fill out the fifth. So I wonder in Japan if Wasp has a big fan following with youngsters because of that. Although Janet's personality is nowhere as near as fun-loving as the EMH version , but still the most down to earth and light hearted of the 5 though. Also love her costume and overall look for all 3 of those shows too.

I had an idea for both Ant-Man and Wasp in the MCU, it sort of keeps in line with the narrative of them in the MCU, anyway, Both Hank and Janet are founding members of the avengers in the first film, along with the other 6, both of them are late 20s to early 30s. They are a big part of the team, especially Janet, as she is the heart of the group. In the film, the nuke is sent to destroy New York, instead of Tony getting there straight away, Ant-man and the Wasp get there first, and try to disable it, Janets "death" plays out as it does in the film, she goes into the nuke to stop it, this time when she does it, nothing happens, she is just gone, so Tony still has to fly it up into space. With Janet gone, Hank is distraught and creates Ultron to helps the innocent, the events of age of ultron play out the same, but with Ultron being more Hank then anyone else, with the destruction of Sakovia, Hank leaves the team. This takes us into the Ant-man film, still with Scott becoming Ant-man, but no Hope, she is gone, that film plays the same as it does but without Hope. Scott is Ant-man in Civil War. Then we get to Ant-man the Wasp, obviously, implying Hank and Janet. In that film, I think Ghost could be scrapped, her story was a bit pointless, we still get a cameo by Bill Foster. Anyway, at the end we get Janet back and in the post-credit scene Janet is the one to go into the quantum realm, and Scott and Hank get snapped. In Endgame, Janet comes back and she is the reason Steve and Tony join forces again, because if Janet can be saved so can every single other person. I think by doing this it allows the audience to connect with Hank and Janet more, it also allows the characters to do more then just be there. I hate how the MCU treated them, I also wonder how Janet became an old woman if, Scott was in there for 5 years, only thinking it had been 5 hours and Janet had been there for like 30 years and it felt like 30 years for her

Agree with pretty much everything from this video, but I think that more than Marvel Comics forgetting about Janet, it feels like they just don't want to use her thanks to the current market. Even Nadia got her books canceled and I don't think they want to "risk it" by publishing a series of minor (according to the average person) character. It'd be great if we could get a Janet focused book and a separate one that continues Nadia's story because her second volume had some really interesting developments.

Fantastic video again. I loved how EMH emphasized her person to person empathy as a central trait, a nice foil to some of the larger than life empathy of the others. I think Yost loves to do that, I remember being surprised on his Scarlet Spider series how Kaines supporting cast was all about growing emotional foundations.

I'm grateful that EMH was one of my first contact points with Marvel media. Before that I was mostly ignorant of superhero media in general. Yet with this series Captain America became a central part of my modern moral code. Hank one of my favorite characters with the Yellow Jacket/Antman dynamic. And then there's Wasp; Wasp was just "The Girl" for me, at least in the begging. But as I watched more and more of the series she became one of my most beloved characters (and a bit of an early puberty crush, I still love her design). I don't know, she just became that happy voice while everything was falling apart.

Although first episode of the third season of the series, the one that would introduce magic and Doctor Strange, seems to have a focus on those two, I do believe Wasp was going to be a very important and central part of the episode. There should be a reason why she was going to be team leader there. A lost jewel.

Yeah, The Wasp was one of the founding members of the Avengers, their first woman and even came up with the name. Now, thanks to the MCU, Jan’s getting shut out and she was stuffed in the fridge in the AntMan movie. What’s really irritating is that I understand not giving Hank the AntMan movie since he is too similar to Tony but, instead of calling the movie Wasp and giving the lead role to Jan, they gave the movie to Scott and wrote her out until the second movie. For all Marvel’s talk about girl power, they don’t seem to have any problem with pushing one of their iconic heroines into the background.

AEMH Wasp is the perfect woman, strong character, empathetic, empowered by her emotions and helps everyone, 3 dimentional, with strong morals. I only think she shouldve gotten a power up? Maybe? Like some level of super strength to contribute more in fights changing size back and forth from small for manuverability and energy blasts and normal to pack a punch. It was a bit lacking in the show I not talking crazy Hulk level or Ms Marvel, but since we are going with insect powers and insecs are proportionatly much stronger, in my humble opiniom she shouldve had some super strength. Car lifting levels? Truck perhaps?

The EMH version of Wasp is so astounding it just really highlights how absurdly messed up the comics version is. Someday Marvel's gonna need to have a reckoning that Janet, when you boil it down, was a serial abuser that eagerly pushed a mentally ill person into a complete breakdown explicitly to take sexual advantage of them - and after the fact blamed her victim as the "real" abuser and turned all of his friends and teammates against them for YEARS, to a level some of them have still never forgiven him. And in modern comics it's turned into the point that she's now mentoring the daughter of her abuse victim, while actively lying to her about the nature of the abuse that took place to make herself look better. It just baffles me, reading it all. People are so blinded by The Slap it's like they can't see how absurdly screwed up the whole situation is, and not in the way they seem to think.

Wasp connected with me a lot as a young kid, sharing my adhd and joy, but able to be a true hero. She was the ultimate female role model in a way the cold, dark assassin raised Widow couldn't be. She wasn't made against her will, she chose her path. Another female character I'd love to see explored in Jane, my hero rocking a fearless attitude and the short haircut I wanted so bad. MCU Jane never felt right to me, not an equal to Thor like Jane was, teaching him how to be a better person while able to protect herself. My only issue with Janet was wanting Hank to become a hero so bad, and playing a part in his downfall. It wasn't her fault, but he was only there for her, and she knew that.

I think there is a lot of Interesting Material when talking about this adaptation and its relationship to the comics, starting with the absolutely uncontroversial topic of sexism. Let's see, I think it doesn't hurt to say that I don't think Stan and Jack are female rappers or anything like that, and adding a woman to the team, and even having her share the title solo with Hank was not the thing. daily bread in the 60s. Likewise, I feel like it was similar to Sue and Reed, the scientist and the wife, and I think that's where emh revitalizes and modernizes it (Obviously the comics did it before, but not with the character like that from the starting point and no slap in the middle). Hank is a scientist, but he separates himself a bit from reed by being more pacifist and seeking the rehabilitation of criminals as his main objective, and reed is more of an explorer. Janet also changes or focuses more on her heroic side, she has an annoying attitude, it may be, but one forgives her since she has the advantage over the comic of being able to show more emotion in the character, while reading and even watching the panels one can interpret it in different ways. In addition, the fact of being "Annoying" is an important factor and that the show highlights when necessary, not telling her "go cook woman and do not bother", if not, highlighting that she is human and with her defects, just like the others. team members, as in that episode hawkeye highlights. I could talk a lot more, but it would already be a copy and paste of the video, and obviously I don't want to do that ... or do I?

On the subject of Wasp being an original avenger in the MCU, Hank Pym’s Giant-Man would’ve been better than MCU’s “Merged Hulk” for what they had him do. Hulk’s big thing is the different personalities dealing with each other, with Banner occasionally being more ruthless than Hulk; MCU hulk made Ultron, apparently knows enough about Pym Particles to time travel via the Microverse, and (post merge) hates violence. MCU Hulk is closer to Ant-Man than MCU’s Ant-Man is.

Great video. Jan is my favorite Avenger because of this show and her lack of true inclusion in the MCU is part of what put me off of those movies. While EMH is an Avengers animated series, some would even call it The Avengers series to watch, it's not the only Avengers animated series. And I'm not talking about any of the Marvel anime series, although you should probably check those out for just for analytical reasons alone, but the Avengers had an animated series back in the 1990s, Avengers: United They Stand, and it's actually pretty cringey. But it does offer up some different characterizations for the team. Most notably, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor are all relegated to guest roles in the series because of the policies of Marvel at the time, but Ant-Man and the Wasp do play starring roles in the series, and are likely much closer to their 1960s versions than EMH had, they also had Hawkeye in starring role, but his characterization is far less enjoyable than EMH. The roster got round out with the lesser-known character of Tygra, another one of Marvel's forgotten female heroes, Wonder Man, who is actually sidelined for most of the series's run for some reason, and the Scarlet Witch. Vision joins the team in a later episode, after Ultron has sent him to try and destroy the Avengers. Probably one of the most unnerving parts of Ultron in United They Stand is Ultron's consent reference to Ant-Man as "Father" and then he gets sidelined for the villainous organization Zodiac during the latter half of the series. The Falcon also joined the roster at point in the series, but that was back when he had a pet hawk named Redwing and could telepathically communicate with the bird. Kang also made an appearance in the series as a villain, but the way his arrival and defeat are handled make you wonder if he even was the real Kang to begin with. Also, character designs will be notably different, that includes outfits and costumes. I don't recommend watching United They Stand, on account of just how cringey it is now (it was pretty cringey during its run), unless you want to try and look at the series as a timecapsule and compare how characters shared between EMH and UTS were structured and what they did better and/or worse than the others. But yeah, some of us were introduced to some of the characters in the form of an animated that made an appearance in EMH, but the way they were handled in the prior serieses meant a lot, probably more than we realized until we saw EMH. Iron Man had a moderately successful animated series back in the 1990s, one where his partner AI was named Homer and he did not yet have the Arc Reactor to power the electromagnet keeping his heart safe and powering his suit. Hulk also had a moderately successful animated series in the 1990s, one where a lot of the elements people are used to hadn't yet fully coallessed. And it's funny, these series were all running at around the same time as Batman the Animated series, which is considered a benchmark for superhero shows as a whole, which means their scripts had yet to be really impacted by what that series had done.

Her characterization was made better pretty early on honestly. By the time Panther joined the team, She is made into a strong and kind character. Just took getting her out from under the pen of Mr Lee. also, I see her as bit like the counterpart to DC's Martian Manhunter(which is fitting since They are both favorites of mine). Both are treated pretty poorly by the live action and often the reboots, and both are the souls of the main teams of their universes
