I love how you answered the friendship question. Friendships are fleeting. I have two friends that I've had for the last 4 years, but I rarely ever see them. Once I finished high school, it was like all the friendships I had, disappeared. Now I'm 22, and I don't mind being alone.

***** I agree! I dealt with enough romantic relationships to really understand, but that's how it seems with people around me. It drives me nuts when someone does something bad to me, and someone else says "you weren't really ever true friends". That's bullshit. If I get attached to someone and I love them, you best believe I was a true friend, even if they weren't, or maybe they were for a short time.

I agree friendship is fleeting, I've had soooo many friends that I've always thought would last forever but once you look back you suddenly realize at a point of time that they might not be your closest friends anymore but that doesn't mean you don't still love them. Everyone moves on and has breakthroughs from time to time, because everyone grows and changes

Really loved this video. You are wise, mature, well informed and realistic. I see people saying, follow your heart, only do what you love etc. kind of statement everywhere. The truth is nothing can get more unrealistic than this statement. Not everyone can afford to do their dream job... it doesn't work out like that. So thanks for saying it. Getting closer to your dream through passion or job is more effective solution than just repeating a generic statement like follow your heart...

maahal jameel I know that you probably aren't looking for me to answer your question, but if you want my advice then here it is; if she treats you like that then she isn't being your friend, you should talk to her about it in private and tell her that she isn't respecting you and if she can stop. If she is making you feel bad then it is definitely okay for you to cut her out of your life, but be respectful about it.

I truly LOVE her wise perspective on friendships- that they are fleeting. It's not like a high school mindset "omg my bestie 4ever!!!" Even 15-30 years is not forever and is fleeting when you look at the long journey of a soul and its many lives. I think she grew up a nomad just like me so it shapes her outlook on life. Nomads who are spiritually inclined would probably align with this view. It's not to say that fleeting means friendship for just a few days and you dump the person. Ultimately if we look beyond the physical world, we are individual souls who grow on our own path and oftentimes even longtime friends might be growing in another way to follow their own spiritual journey. Perhaps some soul connections are "forever", I do not know about that (no one can really claim to know or have have experienced "forever", it's an emotional word in this case), but perhaps that only one that is truly forever is the divine relationship with the self and with God or divine energy or the ultimate source of creation and love (whatever name you want to label it as). People in this day and age have become codependent and want to attach their self worth on how long they've had this certain best friend or how many friends they have, etc. Friends are wonderful, yes but we also have to consider the perspective of how friendships might be affected by someone who became wealthy and famous like Michelle Phan. Maybe she experienced people who left her life out of jealousy, etc. and she knows that side of things and most of us don't. She has more wisdom in that sense. Maybe your so called friends of 15 years would get jealous and leave or become different towards you if you became Rich and famous! Can you guarantee 100% that they will not? Your best friend and best connection in life should be yourself and the divine and those who will come along will do their thing for however long the friendship is meant to last and then you let go when the time is over.

I love what you said about how people usually find fault in others more then finding good. I feel like too many people these days choose to go with, and fully believe, the first impression or thought of another. That can change how you look at someone, how you love someone, and how you treat them. If you keep an open mind about others, and choose to see goodness in them, it becomes so much easier to love everyone.

Friendship is fleeting? Honey I have had friends for 15+ years....It's relationships that are fleeting until you find the right one. Boyfriends come and go but friendships are forever. If you believe friendship is fleeting its probably because you just aren't a good friend.
@onyxfaith9 жыл бұрын
To some degree I see where you're coming from. but I also don't think she's wrong either. Friendships, even true real kens, can be fleeting. it purely depends on how you grow as an individual and if the friends grow in a comparable way. I have one friend who's been in my life 30 yrs. But that relationship would wane and flow depending on where we were in our lives. Others we were friends with have gone there own ways. It happens. it doesn't mean you're a bad friend though.
@MissyRenfro19 жыл бұрын
I get what she's saying. I've had certain friends for 25 years, my whole life, but I've had friends in my past that I don't have anymore. We grew apart. We fell apart. I totally understand what she's saying. My best friend and I have been friends our entire lives and I have certain friends that that friendship has lasted and lasted. And then some where we were tight for a little while and then it fizzled out. Like a romance that doesn't work out.
@chunkybuttization9 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's the point she's trying to get across. I had a great friend in high school we were super close. But years after we graduated she never grew up as an adult and was stuck in a perpetual state of adolescence. Even 8 years after graduation she's still a child and I'm not able to have an adult conversation with her and it's super frustrating. That's why I felt the need to create more distance between us. And also friendships ARE relationships as well. Only Difference is ur not physically intimate with friends like boyfriends/girlfriends.

Hmmm... Some friendships are fleeting, but i think true friendships lasts forever. I have 3 friends whom I am close to for 15 years. Not in proximity, not that we meet all the time and do fun stuff together. We can be apart for months and suddenly when any of us needs help, they are the ones whom I can trust, and vice versa. Give each other space, and when the friendship stays in your time of need, those are true friends.
@MichellePhan9 жыл бұрын
Ellie Soh I agree, that's why I said fleeting. Fleeting like the wind. It comes and goes. Some people believe that friendship means you spend every waking day with that person...which is fine until the other person has a family and priorities change. Fleeting doesn't mean it's over, it's just gone until it comes around again :)
@arialjanny9 жыл бұрын
An example of a fleeting friendship would be when you and your bff have been together since elementary but as soon as you guys are married with kids, it won't be the same like when you guys were younger. You probably won't have time or will be too tired to hang out with each other. You'll will be the best of friends but through the relationship there will be ups and downs.
@mcatherine369 жыл бұрын
Michelle Phan Another way you can phrase this is by saying that friendship is something that will change as time passes by along with the fact that you and your friend(s) will change; it is not something that is always constant. You may notice differences in your relationship with your friend, such as growing distant or becoming more serious about certain things. You may argue more often with your friend or discover things you dislike about them. Relationships usually change as the people involved in them change. Anyways, friendships often will die out but that doesn't necessarily mean that you were a bad friend or that you can never be friends with that person again. Your advice was really wonderful by the way.

My thoughts exactly. I was in complete disagreement with everything dear Michelle was saying on that topic. Sort of reminds me of those rather unfortunate lyrics, "This is what makes us girls/We don't stick together because we put love first." As if friendship should be something at a lower level than all other relationships? When it's done right and when it's true, friendship is wonderfully enduring.

Michelle I love pillow talk very much! But it saddened me to hear that you think friendship is fleeting. I think romantic love is a lot more fleeting than friendship. I feel like people put a lot more emphasis on romantic relationships than on friendships and honnestly ..they are missing out a lot! maybe it's because i grew up loving harry potter but i am as close as ever with my friends from childhood (we all lived afterwards in different countries). but it does take work being a good friend, especially not letting pride get in the way.
@MichellePhan9 жыл бұрын
lullatstars I wish I had childhood friends....truly :/ I didn't have that because my family and I were always on the move since I was a child. I was never able to make a friend for more than 3 months because we had to move. Since then, I trained myself to be completely okay being alone. This enabled me to nurture my creativity. Today, I have a few close friends who are almost like family. Some I've been friends with for over 10 years. I can only count them with 1 hand, that's how many of them are left. Why do I have such little friends? Well.... I've had a lot of friends from the past who only wanted to be my friend because of ulterior motives. Friendship will not always be smooth sailing, ups and downs are part of the relationship... but when you have a relationship that drains you in every way imaginable... you have to let go so that you can refocus on healing yourself. Doesn't mean you have to end the friendship. Just take a break and when life brings you back together, continue from there :)

People with lost of friends often sooner or later realize how few are actually true friends. Wow, what an incredibly shallow view on friendship. If you love someone as a friend you should respect them enough to stick with them through the changes and life experiences. Like any relationship, friendship takes work and trust, but lifelong friends are more than worth it. I feel sorry that you haven't experienced this and I hope you do someday. Of course some friendships are fleeting, but the best ones are stronger than that.
@MichellePhan9 жыл бұрын
Angela Gizzi I was answering a very specific question about dealing with jealousy because a friend was hanging out with another friend instead of her. I wanted her to know that it's important to respect her friend's personal boundaries and relationships.... there are many friends she can make in the future. It's true though, friendship is fleeting. The wind is fleeting, but that doesn't mean the wind will never come back after it goes away. It comes and goes. You will have an inseparable friend one moment, and 5 years later they reappear in your life again. Sometimes your friend changes in ways that does not align with your personal development. You shouldn't force them to change back or vice versa... because ultimately it's their life and their choices. Also, please don't assume I've never had life long friends. I have a few close friends whom I trust my entire life with that I've known for 10 years + I believe everyone will have a unique experience with friendship. There is not a one size fit for friendship. Hence why friendship is fleeting, like the wind. The wind never goes away forever. It will come and go :)

Michelle Phan Thank you for the reply, I see that we have different understandings of "fleeting" here. I agree with your wind metaphor, but "friendship is fleeting" can be easily interpreted as "it's okay to be an unreliable friend". I think you need to be more careful with your wording when you're making videos designed to influence people's lives and when so many people look to you for advice. I will continue to subscribe to your channel and watch your videos because I believe you do have a lot of good wisdom to share, but in this case I was too disappointed not to comment. xoxo, Angela.
@cinderellem.25789 жыл бұрын
Angela Gizzi But you missed the point of what she meant from the get go. What she said clearly refers to the fact some friendship dynamics will change as people grow or (de)evolve; and when that happens, it changes the nature of the relationship either in a positive way or in a negative way; that is why one should always allow one's friends some space and respect, otherwise just like in a relationship, this person might want to leave. Fleeting just means that it is subject to change or to be damaged at anytime and hence being cared and worked for and not taken for granted- not that it is okay to be unreliable -L-

You hit the friendship question right on the nail. I'm glad I'm not the only person who has that issue with friends and being fleety. It really is a part of life, we meet people for a reason and next thing we know, they're gone. The few that stick around are the exception. My best friend of 10 years just recently stopped talking to me. No warning, no reason, just cold turkey dropped me. Yes it hurts, I wish I knew why. I've come to accept that people change and maybe it's for the better. It's true when they say if you aren't losing friends your not growing up.
@beautyjoyable9 жыл бұрын
I don't think friendship is fleeting at all. My girls and I have been friends for 15 years, and though we are completely different people now, we grow with each other. Sure people change but it's rare that their core morals and values do. We met on grounds based on understanding, compassion, love and laughter... And though our personalities and attitudes may have changed, we still love to laugh together, share our pains with each, etc. Same with being in a relationship. If you can say friendship is fleeting, you can say the same for relationships, because in both cases, it's a situation with two human beings that are bound to change over time. It's not about changing the person but accepting the fact that they are growing up and changing; and so are you :) it's part of life, and it's beautiful!

i really appreciate the mature way you are answering these questions for your younger viewers... especially about friendship... we think that it's everything (or we give it much more importance than we should) when we are younger and, while of course it's still important to us later we realize that we can still enjoy their company every now and then but they are not the center of our lives; our priorities definitely change. it sounds depressing putting it like this but i find it actually liberating! i found that i learned so much more about myself as the years passed and it's amazing =)

It always amazes me when a person who is just two years older from me achieved so much in life and watching it from my stand point I always kind od ask myself "what have I been doing all these years" but then I realize that our paths were very different and that it took you years nad years of hustling and youtube to get you to this point in life (people often neglect that and only see the now), while I was attending university and am now on the start of my career finding journey. But the one thing I learned from inspiring youtube role models such as yourself is that it's never to late to try something and as you said it's important to explore your passion in different fields to develop as a person. Really loved this talk, keep inspiring I love having such people in my life. ;) Peace and love

Hello there Michelle, before I say anything. I would just like for you to know that you are absolutely beautiful. I have been looking at you for quite some years now and you are very beautiful inside and out. As I write this to you, I can only hope that you do notice my comment as I highly seek your lovely advice. Michelle, I have been terribly hurt in the past, and mostly very unhappy, and it has had such a great effect on myself, and my thoughts. For the past eleven months, I have been in a long distance relationship with this amazing guy, who I truly love deeply, and he does make me happy. But, when he's away from me. I do find myself thinking quite negatively, for example, thinking about the future, and thinking about if I will always be good enough for him, or if he will want more. We are both each other's real love and real relationship, and I cannot imagine being with anyone else. I seek your advice Mish, how can I be happy and just stop worrying. I love you. 💜

+Nadiya.D Building a meaningful relationship takes time, trust and respect. Long distance is never easy, but you can see it as a positive. Long distance gives you the chance to know the person without the physical. Sometimes, physical love can distort the relationship. I was in a LDR with Dom, and for 2 years, we talked every night, skyped, facetime, sent each other playlists and etc. There were nights when I wish he was next to me, but then I realized I was already lucky to know the fact that there was someone who loved me back. As hard as LDRs are, you have to be realistic and set goals to meet. If you don't have set dates to meet, this will put a strain on the relationship and set the wrong expectations. Once you have set dates and you are able to meet and spend some time together, don't go out on dates or do extravagant things. Stay home together, watch movies on tv, do normal couple things. Wash the dishes together and take a mini road trip somewhere. You learn more about a person when you do normal things than vice versa :) Best of luck beautiful!

+Michelle Phan I had a LDR for five years, first, It was beautiful, he was nice with me, we were a strong relationship and I was so in love with him. But then, he asked me to live together, I was just in high school, I wasn't ready for that, because first I wanted to have a career. When I told him that, and that I just wanted be waited, he changed, he was with me, but no. All the time was watching my mistakes, saying that I was wrong... He never told me things like "you're beautiful" or "I love you". I traveled to his city and all the summer was good, he was with me, in love, I was happy. But when I return to my city, he wasn't good with me again. I had problems in my college and school, and he wasn't for me, I started to feel depressed for all... Now, I actually have depression, I told him, and he just leave me. Said that he haven't time for me. And I don't know what to do because I'm still in love with him, although him not value me. PS: Sorry for my horrible english. I speak Spanish Love you Mish

Michelle i love your pillow talks so much. these topics are ones that i actually have been stressing over recently; recently i feel very distant from my friends and I feel like I don't fit in completely... I feel so lonely nowadays but you're just like my virtual sister

Thank you for helping me establish if I was actually jealous of a person. I felt very weird and wasn't sure if I was just being jealous, that word seemed to not really fit me and how I felt or acted but I now know inspired was the word that I was looking for. Though I am insecure about this person and I had an unhealthy fascination of this person I'm slowly letting go of this feeling and now inspiring myself instead of relying on someone else to inspire me.

Hey Mich :) I love these series honestly, I feel like im talking to the sister I never had, I learn so much from them that my parents, my friends nor my brother could teach me. To everyone in the comments critisizing her about her comment on friendship please calm down. Im a person who likes to tackle problems by looking at it from different angles. I believe some friendships are worth keeping and fighting for even if you change but this perspective can be applied to a few people i know. Thanks for giving me another angle to look from. These pillow talks are the best, though i kinda wish you made it into like a 30, 45 min, hour long talks i feel like 10 minutes isnt enough. I like to sit down and talk it out for a long time I think its more comfortable and beneficial. Keep up the good work Mich!

I love your friendship advice. I adore having my friends and I wanted to follow them to their university or state or neighborhood, but I wasn't asking myself what I wanted to do. I had to let go and trust that even if I'm not seeing them daily we are always friends in spirit. If a friend is a TRUE friend, when our roads meet again, we'll have new perspectives to share.

I agree w/ every single point you talk about. Normally these thoughts don't come to mind until you mature and learn from various life experiences, so to hear that someone thinks like me, it's nice to know that I'm not an odd one out. Very realistic and down to earth comments. Thanks for sharing.

This is something I needed today. Especially the jealousy parts, cause I think I have problems with. Like I overthink if my friends even want to be around me and if they wanna be around someone else I kinda take it personally. Really bad thing but I do it. Thanks Michelle! :)

I am pretty sure that the friendship between me and my best friend will last forever. We have been in the same class for eleven years and are practically like sisters. Recently we split our ways, but every time we see each other it is just like old times! She has changed a lot since then, but she is still the same person who I love :)
