Those empty streets by the ocean at 2:22 are the remnants of Surfridge, a residential community that became almost impossible to live in due to noise after the development of jet airliners. Los Angeles ended up buying out the homeowners in a process completed by the early 1970's. Cleared of buildings, it's now a nature preserve.

Actually, that approach at the top of the video would get you bumped back to training, if not fired in the US. You are NEVER supposed to point the nose of an aircraft down like that, especially that close to the ground. It kills more student pilots than anything else. What happened is he came in with too much speed, and instead of pulling back power, or just going around and coming back in (he was probably high too) which is what they should have done, they tried to save the approach by pointing the nose down. If wind was a factor (like if it was gusting), all that wind had to do was drop, and the pilot could have lost a hundred feet before they knew it, crashed the plane into the ground nose first. I've never personally see it happen, but I saw a plane come in on the back of a truck after someone did it.

That last clip where the planes are lined up perfectly, I was reminded that when I was learning IFR flying, my instructor suggested "never fly down the center--aim to fly a half a tick to the right of center". The theory being the airway is 5 miles wide, so use a few hundred feet of that to add a little extra comfort just in case someone else is illegally flying in the clouds, not talking to ATC and comes head on at you down the centerline. I never really did that in actual practice, but it was an interesting thought.

The person recording the DHL video is insane. You NEVER stand that close to an engine on a green run, and along the plane of rotation. I broke my neck on a green run when the engine shelled out. Send me 50 feet up, and 50 feet back, shifted the jet 45 degrees along the center line, jumped chocks. I landed on my head. And that was just a TF33, a low bypass jet. Even if it wasnt a green run (a brand new jet, called a green run because of the oil used in manufacturing, to prevent corrosion in transport, that will burn with long green flames when first started up) I still wouldnt sit that close and along the turbine plane. Thats just asking for it.

Anyone remember flying the NA Tracks prior to GPS? Very seldom were 2, and certainly never 3 aircraft lined up, even when navigating on the same track. INS could legally deviate 2 nautical miles per hour. That necessitated the 60 nm lateral track separation. And 2000' vertical separation prior to MNPS. Ah the good old days!

The DHL startup was fun. Maintainers refer to it as a "pickled" engine. In the USAF, when they have a green maintainer who has never seen a startup after an engine swap, they tell them to watch for any smoke because it indicates a serious problem. Then they chuckle as the newbie freaks out when the pickled engine belches smoke.

Who was filming this TAP Airbus A 321 in the air above and behind the plane? Unbelivable!
@karhukivi
@karhukivi Жыл бұрын
It is Madeira, the person filming is on a hill overlooking the airport and using a powerful telephoto lens, hence the exaggerated perspective. The runway looks like it is going up a steep hill and the aircraft looks like it is pointing down. In fact, as any propeller aircraft does, the nose is indeed down for an approach. Jet aircraft don't have the drag of the propellers so they use the "back end" of the drag curve, i.e. nose up and power to compensate.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Жыл бұрын
@@karhukiviwhat? No. There is no difference between props or jets. They all fly their approach speed at 1.3 times above stall speed. Jets don’t fly on the “back end” of the drag curve.
@karhukivi
@karhukivi Жыл бұрын
@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 If you have to add more power to reduce speed, then you are on the back end of the drag curve - according to Derek Davies "Handling the Big Jets". He was a test pilot, so perhaps he was wrong? Vimd can be above Vs x 1.3 for some models he mentions.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Жыл бұрын
@@karhukivi you don’t add power to reduce speed. You are talking about a test pilot. He probably performed these type maneuvers for testing. But it’s not normal operation. In the early jet age, some navy pilots lost their lives by flying behind the power curve. Engines weren’t powerful enough back then so when they found themselves too slow, they couldn’t accelerate even at full power and flew into the back of aircraft carriers. Civilian airplanes use 1.3 as their approach speed. Doesn’t matter if it’s prop or jet. However, prop planes do tend to fly faster during the approach to keep up with jets and not disrupt air traffic. They can do this, because the can easily slow down due to the drag of the props. That’s when it looks like they are pitched down more.

The lower pressure on the upper surface is one of the key elements to create lift so it is always (or should be) that way. Maybe you wanted to say that it was "low enough, enabling the condensation"? :)
@rogerbye4047
@rogerbye4047 Жыл бұрын
It’s very interesting to note that the condensation is happening only inboard of the ailerons. (Google “washout” if this is unobvious). ((of course, airliner aerodynamics may be a lot more subtle and this is not really what’s happening)). And agree with the other posters on air pressure.
@armuk
@armuk Жыл бұрын
yeah i was puzzled by that too. condensation in a thermodynamic equilibirum occurs when ambient pressure increases above vapor pressure, not decreases
@fluchterschoen
@fluchterschoen Жыл бұрын
@@armuk Surely this is as far away from a thermodynamic equilibrium as you can get? It's a thoroughly dynamic, not-in-equilibrium event??? Not only is there a pressure differential between the top and bottom surfaces of the airfoil; a temperature differential is also created? The low pressure airflow on the top of the airfoil also experiences a temperature drop. The colder, lower pressure airflow cannot incorporate water vapour to the same extent as the environmental/ambient air, therefore whatever vapour is in the ambient air tends to condense (fall out of suspension) when it experiences lower pressure and temperature.
@armuk
@armuk Жыл бұрын
@@fluchterschoen "low pressure airflow on the top of the airfoil also experiences a temperature drop" -> why? p.s. an equilibrium can be dynamic. regarding atmospheric water - at a given temperature, a dynamic equilibrium is present whereby the free energy per mole of molecules in the liquid and vapor phase is equal
@fluchterschoen
@fluchterschoen Жыл бұрын
@@armuk I suspect you're correct here and I am wrong. I was assuming a drop in gas pressure equates to a drop in temperature. However, in aerodynamics I think I understand that this doesn't hold true? Although the pressure above the airfoil is lower, the gas particles are accelerated - so the gas's density is lower but the particles are more energetic. So I was probably incorrect to say the temperature would be reduced. In a static body of gas, lower pressure would mean lower temperature - that's true, right? Also, I now understand slightly better what you mean about dynamic equilibrium. Empirically we can see that vapor condenses on the top surface of the airfoil, where we know the pressure is lower. What is the scientific explanation for that? In simple terms is it that the gas (air) is less dense and therefore less able to maintain water molecules in suspension?

Not a fan of that approach. This was a light-to-moderate crosswind approach, and the pilot was frankly unstable, albeit on the vertical axis. It really doesn't matter what caused him/her to be high prior to minimums. Wind shear, too much energy, just being high entering final...they all end up with the same outcome. Twice needing two significant down pitch adjustments, one of which added a ton of energy (see the long flare). It's an easy go-around decision. It wasn't worth the risk of running long or porpoising off the nose wheel. Unnecessary - unsafe. No fault go-around, every time.

I saw somewhere recently that on average, every commercial aircraft is struck by lighting once a year

The last is CHEM TRAILS. Don't deny it.

Use Chem trails to our advantage. When i see a plane with bright contrails I go on flight radar 24 and touch route. With good binoculars I follow the contrails. I have followed them up to 300 miles before I lose them. The contrails stay flat and level with a defined distance with the horizon. The internet earth curve calculator says that is 11 miles over the curvature of the earth. Following plane contrails into the sunset is best.

I've had more than a few flights with a TAP. The food is shite, but the crew are great

If your mechanical knowledge is equal to the problem at hand, then the Armature sprocket is interfering with the flow into the dynaflow.

Do planes normally have to land for a lightning strike or is it just for the new plastic airplanes?

Omg that is so cool seeing others along the same path, but lower elevation :) . And I guess returning after a lightning strike is just to confirm no damages? I know it is common for them to get hit often enough.

@@darkwood777 really not that common. I don’t know what to tell you. I flew out of south east Asia for 8 years and never got hit by lighting. And not just me. One of our airplanes got hit once, while sitting on the ground.

Was the TAP nose down approach necessary? I hope there were no passengers on that plane. Ever heard of go-arounds?

Ever heard of perfect flying skills as demonstrated that are needed to land at Madeira? No go around necessary. This is normal operation in Madeira.

You should see a DC-9, 20º nose down and -3500 ft/min. on short final for landing

The passengers of the first jet must have been terrified at the beginning thinking they had a crazy pilot who was trying to crash the plane.

RE the first one, that doesn't look like Madeira Airport, based on Google Maps imagery. It DOES look like a lot of nose-down.
