I would not say ignored the instruction, Rather got over involved in his CTOT and forgot / lost situation awareness for a moment due to the distraction. Saying he ignored it is a little unfair on the pilot. "Pilot FORGOT controller's instruction at Zurich Airport".

Yes, agree, they were engross with CTOT so much so they forgot about the instructions, this should not happen in a modern cockpit like this but it does

The Air France pilot did not seem to be using appropriate dialog with the controller, especially no call signs, no read back. Something was off in the cockpit. The dialog seemed like a CB radio operator.

The controller is responsible for obtaining a read back of the clearance, which never happened.

Clearly he was distracted by the petty takeoff time argument and that's what caused him to deviate the holding point. It's not about being right... It's about being safe since he is responsible for all the passengers sitting behind him.

It’s also scary that some companies (you know who) allow Accountants to interfere with safety eg minimum fuel…frequent pan pans…not to mention ridiculous long hours at the column.

Quite often 1 pilot is driving the airplane, while the other pilot is communicating & doing everything else. 1 pilot simply can not safely do all those things together.

@@davecrupel2817 yes they can do it safely. I do it regularly. Airliners only have two pilots in case of one being incapacitated. One pilot is completely capable of operating the aircraft on their own as happens occasionally when the other pilot becomes incapacitated. If it was up to the airlines there’d only be one pilot. Because it’s mandated to have two, the manufacturers design the operating systems and procedures for two pilot operation so you have pilot flying and pilot monitoring. Might as well make use of two pairs of eyes and two brains. But you only actually need one set...

0:43 He actually says: "Oh, for Christ's sakes.." Pilot gets annoyed with the CONTROLLER, for not knowing who's talking to him. Like the controller is trying to be difficult just for fun or something. The controller simply doesn't know who's asking these questions on frequency. I'd say this pilot is just very self-involved or is used to airports where he's the only moving plane when contacting tower.

@@kombolasha Never heard anyone react in such a way to one's own mistake, I don't react to my own mistakes like that and there sure as hell wasn't an "I am an idiot" ring behind it. Here is my tip for you coming straight from a psychologist. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, smells like a duck and looks like a duck, assume that it is a duck. The same goes for human behaviour. If you see self-centered behaviour, don't go out of your way and don't become Sigmund Freud in order to excuse that behaviour with some theories; if the entire interaction looked self-centered, then because it was.

I expect better from this site. The pilot didn't "ignore" anything. He screwed up and apologized, and the tower controller acknowledged that the A1 / A2 thing is not that clear. Move it along folks, nothing to see here.

Well yeah they did ignore... they didn’t read back the clearance. Same as ignoring: especially as they went on past the hold point and only stopped at the wig-wag lights for the runway hold point. If that’s not ignoring I don’t know what is...?

After the controller informed the pilot he screwed up at 2:05 it sounds to me like he replied with "scheiße" not "sorry about that." Put that in the report, lol. Nothing funnier than someone complaining on the radio and that person being told they screwed up, it just takes the wind right out of their sails.

The title is not misleading. The pilot was told to hold alpha-2 but ignored the instruction and went to alpha-1. It’s very simple.
