The Pilot Kakuno is a fun little pen that I've been looking forward to being able to offer for well over a year! Pilot USA just recently brought it into the US, and it's definitely worth looking into if you want a low-priced workhorse fountain pen that writes well and has some personality to it. **UPDATE** this pen will accept the CON-70 converter.

Fantastic pen. I bought three of them for my 7 year old son when we were in Japan last month and he loves them. He said that we are now a "fountain pen family". I should have replied with the immortal words of Brian Goulet -- "Write on".

I ordered this for my first fountain pen after a lot of research AND realising that in my currency most “cheap” beginner pens are not that affordable. Got my converter and I’m happy to inform that today I performed a flushing successfully, there was some ink stuck close to the nib, and before messing up and regretting my life chooses, I looked up if the nib could be taken off and replaced, this is the video that showed me the answer and how to do it so… yay. Thank you.

These are great inexpensive pens. Now there are more colors, too. I have an all clear and a white/yellow cap. The separately available Kaweco clips fit them and also the biggest size Pilot con-70 converter. Those 2 extras double the price to about $25.

Hello, do you still love this pen? Do you by chance also own a twsbi eco or 580? If so which do you think is essential if you had to pick one in EF?
@bikkies
@bikkies 3 жыл бұрын
@@blackbohemianmama I don't have any Twsbis smaller than fine so I don't know how the EF would work in that, but Pilot's EF nibs are surprisingly smooth and reliable. Not scratchy for me at all. The price is also very attractive. The ink capacity isn't going to match a Twsbi but, as others have noted on here, the CON-70 fits later-generation Kakunos. I have that converter in all 12 of mine and it adds a welcome bit of extra weight as well as more ink capacity than a CON-40 or CON-B.

I know this is super old, but, I'm old too, so, took me a bit to get here 😊 I have several Jinhao x750's that i bought from you guy's a few years ago... best customer service ever by the way😊... but they obviously only had the medium nibs and i felt like i had to write much fatter in my handwriting, if that makes any sense. And not so great for sketching. I have next to no money, in fact if i buy another pen its only due to a gift card😊 otherwise it would go to hopefully not losing our home after a radical health issues when my surgeon decided to forget how to do the surgery so instead paralyzed half of my diaphragm which collapsed my lung, plus massive nerve amd muscle damage across half my chest and i had to fully relearn to use my arm.... then my husband was just let go a couple weeks ago making our already desperate situation, well, made ut overthinking to be honest. Sorry... babbling😢 so, using up the last bit of a gift card for a fountain pen that i don't have to fix or mess with and will write smoothly because RA is eating me alive and is why i began trying fountain pens to begin with, because i couldn't hold a regular, like a Bic pen so straight up nor can i grip it tightly to be able to use enough pressure to work. Fountain pens, even not great ones, have let me go from writing maybe a sentence or 2 before very painfully cramping and swelling, to being able to write out a whole card or letter, and as I'm stuck at home mostly, art, also a more recent endevor😳🤦🏻‍♀️, and drawing & writing cards to family and friends helps me try to lose my mind as our world has been flipped over, permanently, and I'm useless to help my own family. But, i can't spend much. So, in all this babble🤦🏻‍♀️😳😬 I'm just wanting to check to see if I'm correct in what I've read, that Pilot nibs are thinner then say my Jinhao nibs. If i could, I'd order several of these pens in ef, f & medium to be able to maybe write letters with the medium as I've read it's the smoothest, but the thinner ones for drawing in a waterproof black and dark brown or sepia ink❤. But, that's not my world now, but a girl ... alright, old lady😬😆🤣... can dream😊 So if i can afford one, it's just one. I'd really love the con70 converter so i don't have to fill as often, but, i cannot afford a converter too and the only ones i own are a universal one and those that come in the Jinhao, which i assume do not fit. So, that'll have to wait. Its probably dumb to buy any of it, as i also don't have the needle thing. Oh well. Sorry for the long comment😳🤦🏻‍♀️ i get anxious that ill make a mistake which only males my overthinking & over-explaining worse then normal 😬 I just wanted to make sure this pen is as great as I've heard and about the thickness of the nibs. Thanks so much for putting up with me! I appreciate any advice on this.😊 Thanks for all your help!!

I love this pen. I bought one on a lark during my first trip to Taiwan two summers ago and I was shocked at how well it wrote despite the low price. I swapped out one of the nibs from another Kakuno onto my gray houndstooth Metropolitan because I wanted a finer point and it writes even better. I guess I have the older version as the fine point I swapped didn't have the winking eye these new ones have.

Thank you for the video! I have a question about kakuno fine nib size. On Nib hook, Kakuno fine seems quite fine, and almost as fine as pilot decimo extra-fine. I have both these pens, but my Kakuno seems to be quite broader than the decimo extra-fine. Is that to be expected?

Full disclosure, I actually enjoy writing with my Kakuno more than with my Pilot Custom 823. Not a knock on the 823 as it’s a gorgeous high quality pen, but the Kakuno is just such a no-nonsense straight forward pen and so smooth to write with and the colors are so vibrant and fun, I can’t help but love it! Also, the price makes it so that I don’t mind carrying it around everywhere I go. I won’t cry if it gets lost, stolen or broken. I would with any of my pens over $200. That’s another plus going for it. But don’t be fooled by its cheap price, it writes better than a lot of $50 pens out there.

Thank you for this video. Does the ink in your Kakuno dry up or leak out ever? IDK what's happening but I fill the CON-40 and then over the next several days the ink in the cartridge is less and less even if I'm not using the pen. So frustrating (and expensive)! This happens in my Kakuno whether it's the Pilot disposable cartridge ink, Noodlers ink, or even D'Atrametis. It also happens with my Pilot Metro pens. It does *not* happen with TWSBI pens, but I really love the Kakuno EF. Any advice? Thanks!

If you're using lower quality paper, it'll bleed through or ghost more often. But if you use fountain pen friendly paper like Rhodia/Clairefontaine, it shouldn't be an issue. Some inks are more prone to do it than others though, so it does depend. - Colin

If you really wanted to make this eyedropper convertible, you can probably use a hot glue gun to really fill those holes (ideally coating the entire inside top part near the holes.
