I am in my 19th year in EMS, at age 37. Aviation is and will be my second career. The finances were a struggle, but got a loan through Climb Financial to cover the entire package in a Part 61 school with a tolerable repayment plan. Still full time with EMS (120 hrs a pay period) and going to school full time (started in October of 2022). CSEL check ride is on Monday. I am glad to hear I am not alone. :)

41 year old mechanical engineer here and 7.3 hours into my private. I bounce between 80-100% on my confidence in going career pilot depending on the day. My plan is to self evaluate once I reach private. The biggest hurdle in my mind at this moment is how to get to commercial while making the house payment 😅. I'm still learning that making friends in the right places is a big boost

Funny how many paramedic/ firefighter are going down the career path. I too am one and after 13 years I’m switching from it to aviation. I’m in the liberty program. I have gotten out after getting my commercial. It all depends on your FTA (flight training affiliates) with them and the new policies are not good as the FTA can keep your leftover flights fees after the semester per the contract. This could be 4 or more thousand dollars in my case. Luckily I finished my commercial before the policy started this semester.

Thanks Trent for another informative Video. Hi Vern, is your company hiring ? I have over 100hrs in a Mooney M20C and a couple a few hrs in the J model. Building time on my own is getting more and more expensive so I remain stagnant. I need to start getting paid to fly. Thanks much.

Hey Trent, can you recommend the top 3 instructors you used first name only? I am going to the same flight school as you at 53 as well. Just over 700TT for me as a Private Pilot and decided to go for my career 2.0! After watching this video with Vern I realized that you and I have a lot in common and Vern has a lot in common training wise as my son. You and I started flying in the early 90's and earned our PPL's then started again at 53. Vern went to Liberty and flew out of BJC near Denver and my son graduated from Liberty and is flight training at BJC now. If I ever needed a sign to go for it ....... This is IT!

Great series! Trent - could you please pick up the pace a little - especially when you’re asking the person you’re interviewing for a review of their story. If you could let them do a short history instead of going over your notes. It breaks up the flow of the story they’re telling!😅

Hi Trent and Vern, Do you think it would be an efficient strategy for a PPL guy to do his CML next and then CFI since they would cover a lot of the same material and it would still be fresh? Later do the instrument and CFI I together in quick succession to take advantage of that same strategy?
@vernonmiller414
@vernonmiller414 4 ай бұрын
Hi Paul. Thanks for the question. Looking into the FARs you’re required to have your instrument rating to be a CFI. Commercial you can get without an instrument rating but you’re limited to flights within 50nm of the departing airport and can’t fly at night for hire. Just my .02 on it. A road commonly taken is Instrument rating then COM ASEL then CFI since it’s still fresh from commercial.

I’m happy for this guy because EMS doesn’t pay well at all. Where I am at, EMTs make minimum wage. I’m a firefighter and am doing this path. I love my job but would like more travel and more earning potential for retirement.

I am retired FF myself injured on the job myself also. Looking into schools myself and trying to navigate all the options and ways to fly for work. He said he went to Library university in VA but also said he lived in Denver CO. My question is how did he do it did he move to VA for school or did the university offer on line courses and did they work with a flight school in his area. Great video Trent again and any info would be appreciated!

Hey brother. Thank you for your question. Liberty and some other colleges offer online programs with Flight Training Affiliates which is what I took advantage of for my path. Amongst the several reasons I chose Liberty was because they offered a significant discount for military and first responders. I went with Western Aviation out of BJC for my training affiliate and have kept in touch with many there. They have a great school there with good airplanes and I made the system work for me. Feel free to PM me for helpful tips I used to keep things going for a collegiate program. Getting your private first is always a good idea too as they’ll credit that towards your degree.

I am wondering whether there are any weekend aviation gigs out there for low time pilots who want to exercise CPL privileges without having to commit chunks of time in advance. It seems that much of non-corporate commercial work is either for low time pilots looking to build time in chunks like in this video, or it's contract work for high time pilots who have already put in their time in a traditional aviation career and who now freelance. I fly regularly, I don't want to switch careers, but I would love to be able to take gigs on the weekends so that I could do something in aviation without having to spend my own money to do it. Potential video idea, Trent, if you are so inclined.
