Should you cutaway a pilotchute in tow malfunction before or after pulling the reserve ripcord? Something to think about...

Thanks for sharing Brian. We all learn from the mistakes of others and I'm sure as I grow I may post a few myself. I got into a flat spin Friday which has never happened to me before. I saw what I did with my body to cause it. I corrected quickly enough, but lesson learned is I need to be better body aware. My legs often don't listen to my brain.

In your initial check how would you recognize Pilot Chute in Tow?

Oh, I see it, the closing loop and the bridle were upside down, haven't seen that packing error but I'm only 52 jumps in...

PCIT is pretty obvious. It stays windy.

I was trained (recently) to go directly to reserve in a Pilot Chute in Tow mal

You should still cutaway. It the pin is locked, you’d still land with your gear but if the pilot chute is just flying in your burble, once you’re under your reserve, the pilot chute could catch more air and then you’d end up having two out.

How would you notice that malfunction?

I was trained you pull, nothing happens, you look over your shoulder, breaking the burble, see a pilot chute flying behind you@@bentonkareem

I like your idea. Is there any downside to it? Since not cutting away after pulling the reserve has certain risks. The SIM only says to “be prepared to cut away”, but why wait to see if it goes wrong? Is it just a matter of not wanting to go search for your main afterwards?

Would the risers become exposed after reserve deployment? I found myself with this mal (PC routed correctly) and I went for standard EPs. The main got hung up anyway and i coralled it between my legs for landing. Still unsure how it stayed "attached"

Ehy Brian, good observation, but actually I'm thinking...even though the 3rings are released by cutting away those risers should stay stowed into the risers covers, the chances of risers flapping around like this it's quite unusual situation if there's none main out (unless container is too old and covers couldn't keep it in place, but this is an additional concern) . I would personally suggest to cutaway first in this kind of mulfunction.

Do what makes sense to you. Consider how certain you are that the riser covers will stay closed at terminal velocity, as the reserve is deploying.
