Most likely, the go around was called just before the relatively hard touchdown. As long as thrust reversers aren’t deployed, you can still go around. Also, once you begin a go around, you follow through with it.
@erich930
@erich930 5 ай бұрын
Not likely, as the spoilers were deployed for several seconds. This indicates that the thrust levers were at or near idle. The point where the spoilers retracted again is where the thrust levers were moved.

Once you are stable you don’t need full power. Also there are speed limits at certain altitudes. Thrust reduction is completely normal. Finally, a passenger airplane can fly with only 1 engine if the other one fails.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO GO AROUND ! 😉 If the reverse thrust is not activated, go-around remains possible after touchdown.
@n666eo
@n666eo 7 ай бұрын
Totally agreed. However in this case, it's not obvious why the go around from an outside view. It's a hard landing, yes, but early on the runway, spoilers deployed, etc... The spoilers deployed for a few seconds indicate that the go around was initiated after a few second on the ground. So it's hard to tell why they have gone around with the aircraft apparently safe on the ground. I can only see 2 reasons : 1. runway incursion further down the runway (invisible on the video) 2. training flight with no intent to do a full stop.
@GyrisCap
@GyrisCap 7 ай бұрын
There is no place where a runway incursion would happen later down the runway. And there is no way in hell, that you would do a training flight into LIS with the intent of a go-around or touch and go. The go around in the case of the BA seems a bit unnecessary.

@bonbondesel
@bonbondesel 7 ай бұрын
@@jimmiller5600 That's also what I thought. It can be a training but it doesn't have to be a training necessarely. If they can't maintain centerline properly or even can't confirm that the aircraft will stay on the ground properly, they have to go around. It can take 10 seconds to relalize that the directionnal control is not ensured or that the aircraft refuses the ground. The Pilot Flying will use the reverse thrust only when ensured that full stop landing can be done for this reason.

@@n666eoI’m sure there’s any number of reasons; speed too high to safely stop, instability of the landing, high winds, etc. The spooling up of the engines on these planes is not immediate, so it’s likely their decision to do a go around was made even before the wheels touched the runway.
@n666eo
@n666eo 7 ай бұрын
@@OwnedByACatNamedC.C. : I'm sure there is a good reason. I'm just surprised because in 99.9% of go around, the reason can be guest, not in this case. The spooling up is not immediate, but the retractation of spoilers is (at least very short). And the spoilers stayed out for 5 seconds with the aircraft on the ground, which means it took 4 to 5 seconds on the ground to the crew to decide to go around.

I’ve been flying with a HUD since 2001. A lot of pilots refused to switch, but finally the FAA requires them to use the hud during training. Suddenly a lot of my coworkers regret not switching earlier to the HUD. It’s way more helpful. I barely look down and the regular displays. More importantly, you have your eyes outside at all times. I think Boeing and Airbus are installing HUDs on their latest aircraft, because too many of the younger generation keep their focus inside 100% of the time. You can actually see it on all these KZfaq videos how pilots go “inside” while the airplane is still on the ground.

My best guess is that when go around is initiated it cannot be aborted and there is a delay for the engine to respond to the go around original command.

Yes there's a gap between the TO/GA command and the engine revs up, but it's relatively small! Considering the time that it stays on the ground, probably the pilot initiated the go around just a second before he touched down because the spoilers were not deployed! The reason is unknown, but it could be everything, even an ATC order!

Usually it only makes that sound on full power or high thrust settings, so you only really hear it on takeoff. You also hear it louder when you're sitting in front of the engines than behind them.

Thats Rolls Royce aircraft engines . GE much quieter and more efficient.

It is normal, it’s a 757 with RR. At around 15000ft, you no longer hear this sound, the wind become louder.

It is. As the aircraft climbs and accelerates the sound of the air flowing around the airplane over takes the engine noise. At cruise the sound in the cabin is similar to that of a fast flowing river.

Thanks Gentlemen, obvs I can only afford to sit behind the engines and usually next row up from the loos, so the noises I hear are quite different! Perversely I enjoy watching this channel, even though it is about mistakes and occurrences that are beyond my comprehension, but the sheer magnificence of flight is a joy to behold (landing safely better!)

As someone who hears every sound in the plane, that thrust reduction creeps me out every time. I'm like, what happened, did we lose an engine, are we falling, etc.

It is not unusual for the wheels to touch the runway on a go around.......does not mean a late go around especially when performing a low visibility approach. It all depends when the decision to go around was made.... There is no such thing as a LATE go around. .. Just a go around !!!

I experienced one of those once Long story short, that airport was previously for military activities only, and it was made slightly bigger to handle commercial aircraft. The terrain is pretty rough, and the weather isn’t the best. Not to mention the runways are relatively tiny so even the most experienced pilots do at least 3 go-arounds during landing. One of those go-arounds happened to be a bit late…
