The Pima Air and Space Museum keeps growing and maturing as one of the best collections of aircraft in the world. The museum enjoys a fantastic location just outside the boundary of Davis-Monthan Air Force base at Tucson, Arizona.
Many military aircraft have been towed to the site from the sprawling aircraft storage facility at Davis-Monthan. Several large buildings have been erected on the museum campus to offer greater protection for a portion of the collection, including rarities like a B-24J Liberator, PB4Y-2 Privateer, and the only Martin PBM Mariner in the world, which is on loan from the National Air and Space Museum.
To get an idea of the massive collection at Pima Air and Space Museum, their website includes a roster. We visited in February 2022. Take a look, and see how many of the aircraft, both domestic and foreign, you can identify. The museum's collection is around 400 aircraft. It is the largest non-government funded aerospace museum in the U.S.

I'm from New Hampshire. I visited Pima last September while visiting friends. As a pilot and military aviation enthusiast, I was stunned at the collection. We spent the entire day there, even though it was 97 degrees outside. The buildings brought great relief as they are air conditioned and the staff is friendly and accessible. I plan on returning next year when I visit D-M. Happy New Year to all.

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the Pima museum is doing a good job of bringing more aircraft indoors in a series of large buildings.

Glad to see quite a few British aircraft there: the Harrier family, a Lightning, Jaguar, Meteor (in Israeli markings), Gannet.... If they could acquire a Vulcan, that could provide some shade for the visitors. Saw a LOACH but no Huey; or did I miss it? A wonderful collection; I'd probably die of a heat stroke if I visited in person. Thanks for making this!

Yes, Huey is present in the museum, but maybe missed in the forest of aircraft! Thanks for watching and commenting. The various exhibit buildings provide good respite from the sun, and a trip in the fall-winter-spring can be quite pleasant, maybe even cold.

Great video. I worked at AMARC in the 80's before transferring to another agency, and the museum was right out the back gate, and I visited several times. The museum has sure come a long way in 35 years. The B-29, the B-17, and the Douglas Dakota were still outdoor exhibits. Glad to see them restored and preserved indoors away from the elements. So many new additions also.A lot off the aircraft were still frontline in the 80's. Some of the aircraft on display were come into AMARC for storage when I was there. Some of them I might have processed myself!

Glad you enjoyed the video. The whole operation at Davis-Monthan, from MASDC to AMARC to AMARG, is fascinating. The Pima museum is well-positioned to get aircraft from D-M.

Thanks for posting. I haven't been there for a few years, so it's nice to see the new additions to the collection. The harsh desert sun really takes a toll on paint, so the planes stored outside are repainted every decade or so. The EE Lightning looked brand new when it was added to the museum a few years ago, but now is looking a bit faded.
@airailimages
@airailimages Жыл бұрын
Yes -- there is a curious dilemma with the desert location. It preserves metal airframe structures quite well, but soft materials -- to include paint -- take a beating. It is good to see the museum putting more and more of the collection indoors.

That brings back some fond memories there. back in the early 80's when I was stationed at Davis Monthan I did a little volunteer work there for the museum. At that time they had an F4U Corsair that I had a hand in restoring before I got deployed oversees. Who knows, maybe when I retire in a couple years I will have to see about going back down there and see if they could use more volunteers again.

I'm an old Harrier Handler Last time I was down there they had one slightly beat up AV8A. Looks like they've added to the Menagerie. There's even a Kestrel, the prototype bird. I'll have to get back there soon. I live in Tucson, so it's too easy to postpone.

I don't remember it in 1959 when I lived there. Coming back to visit I was impressed with The Columbine. the Air Force One for Eisenhower. With Truman era technology. Fabric insulation on the phone and mic cords. Scary thinking our President used it. Ike was able to deliver a modern looking Boeing jet to JFK. So much progress in 8 years. I didn't see it in the video, or the Stealth hanging from the ceiling.

And they had several examples of the same plane in various models, interesting, the B36 was not there but there were 2 or 3 various models B52's , they have a tram there now suggest anyone take that around, that place is huge and hot in summer, I was there in dec, great museum !!!

Typically, the charter for a museum like Pima is for static displays, not flying aircraft. Some, like the B-24, last flew on arrival to Tucson in 1969. It is probably quite close to flyable as far as completeness, but I doubt soft goods like hoses have been kept up to date. Piston engines may be preserved with a heavy oil, and therefore not operable without cleanup. And the military aircraft that are loaned to the museum typically will have a "save list" when they are declared surplus, in case there are parts in critical supply to keep others still flying in the military, so the military planes at Pima are probably all over in terms of completeness or not. When I was the curator at McChord we received one of the F-106s from the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at McChord, but engines were in short supply so the engine was removed for the save list. We had some clever help from folks who welded a mount so we could still attach a non-serviceable afterburner to make the F-106 externally complete looking for display. All kinds of tricks of the trade.
