Moray 700 link?: Don't even consider buying this...it is awful...
Biohome products: www.filterpro.c...
Small mesh bags for media: geni.us/DtoexHC
This Moray 700 filter in its standard form is an atrocity and I have no idea how Aqua One can put their name to this and then also produce the really great Aquis range of canister filters.
I had the pleasure of filming a new episode of this series yesterday where I pimped an Aquis 1250 and I had to keep reminding myself that it was from the same manufacturer which also sells the Moray 700. Even with some improvements to make the Moray 700 better it's nowhere near perfect but at least it will give you an idea of what can be done with it.
I'd much rather talk about the Aquis 1250. It's good:
Aquis 1250 on Amazon: geni.us/P7ZC4
Aquis 1250 on Ebay: ebay.to/2woDKJw
This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:
sales@filterpro.co.uk

Anyone who sends a filter will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win.
Please do not send any filters without contacting me first as I want to try and cover every type of filter, not 20 of the same make and model
Due to the high international shipping cost I am currently only taking filters from the UK but I'm hoping that as this series progresses a useful database of knowledge will be built up which will help viewers understand how their filters work, the limitations and the steps you could take to improve filtering capacity and efficiency.
The goal with any filter is to try and achieve FULL CYCLE filtration which is the reduction in ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate - if you look anywhere online you'll see people tell you that the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium ends with the production of nitrate which is removed by regular (often large) water changes.
That is HALF the cycle and is done by AEROBIC bacteria which favors highly oxygenated conditions and is very easy to grow on any surface.
The last part of the cycle (reduction in nitrate) is completed by ANAEROBIC bacteria which favors an environment which is very low or devoid of oxygen. It takes filter media with a very specific internal structure to support both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to allow for full cycle filtration but a suitably sized, well set up filter, will allow the full cycle to complete which results in more stable water conditions and less water changes (typically 10% every 1-2 weeks). Canister filters will generally offer the best provision for filter media but even internals can be significantly improved to boost water quality and fish health.
The following videos will be useful to anyone interested in learning more about filtration, bacteria and making the conditions for your fish as good as possible:

After watching your videos I've managed to replace the black Cartridge with Charcoal granules and the other cartridge has 250gb of Bio Balls topped with a coarse foam. ...a week later and the tank is cloudy. ..the pump cannot cope with the volume of media, there's not enough water flow. I think the internal baffle tube is a useless design and I think I'll be ordering a Fluval u3 instead!!!

I got one of these thrown in with a new aquarium, though mine had carbon in the middle section. The main problem is they are really bulky for an internal filter, but don't actually contain much media. I ran it for about a week, bought a new top end canister filter and dumped it's media (and bacteria grown so far) in to that. Will keep it as a backup.

Hi Richard, I have been following your work for a little while and you helped me a lot as a newbie fish keeper, but I have found a flaw in this pimp. I've also got an Aqua One internal filter but mine is a slightly simpler model with less compartment, that came with the Aspire 55 aquarium...the point is that mine works the same way with the same pipes in the inside. I do not think that the water is going to go up in the filter as you modified it. As you said in the video the water gets drawn in from the outsides but then it will go down in to the pump and blown straight up in the black pipe. So what I've done is, that I've put the mechanical filtration in to the top compartment and siliconed off the holes on the second one which holds the biological media, so water gets drawn in only to the top one. I drilled holes to the bottom of the top compartment as you drilled the bottoms of the Moray's compartments. This way no debris can be drawn to the biological media and all the mechanically filtered water has to go through it. Hope it makes sense ... and sorry for being a smart ass. :D Keep up the good work and looking forward to the big reveal! Going to order some biogravel because as you always say the biohome ultimate just not the right size for internals. Best regards, Nikola

Ah man. I've got one of these as it came with a secondhand tank (albeit it has one less chamber). I couldn't understand why I was getting not very clear water. I changed media, added various densities of foam, replaced the AC media, changed the order of filtration - but now you've broken it down, I can see exactly why it's not working properly. At this stage, I think I'll just get a Fluval U2 to replace it, as everything inside it needs changing, so what's the point?

Evening! I've just pimped the filter as you have done (it came with the tank and I'm limited on money just now). However the filter media is set up the opposite way around to what you have done here. Of course I can swap it around but why would they say from the bottom up needs to be carbon medis then ceramic then what looks like a very course sponge at the top? Just curious as now I'm wondering which direction the water will go. Many thanks 😊😊

A lot of manufacturers set up their filters wrong, and I guess we will never know why. Having the coarse foam at the last stage of filtration makes no sense.
@bozclan4998
@bozclan4998 3 жыл бұрын
I think the way this has been pimped is wrong. If you look at the way the filter works it actually pulls water downwards through the media and into the bottom chamber then expels the filtered water up the central black pipe and out through the top. So by opening up the lowest filter section, your actually bypassing the chambers above as the water drawn in here will just do down then up the centre pipe and out. If your still using it I would reverse the media and put the chamber where you’ve opened up the vents at the top so the flow is correct.

I will be getting an Aqua One Marisys 240 marine filter sent up (hopefully next week) so that will be an interesting one to look at, plus I'm having a sump made to demonstrate the various options of setting that up for fresh and salt water too. Eventually I'd like to cover almost every filter which has ever been made, lol - it will provide people with a great resource of information which is what it's all about for me as there is nothing more frustrating than searching for niche product information and only finding tools doing 'unboxing' videos on them with no useful information at all. I know my videos will never get the millions of views of vlogging channels but I'd much rather have the majority of the videos containing something which actually helps the viewer as it's a great feeling. The marine filter video may be a few weeks away as I still have 4-5 more videos in this series to edit down and there are a few filters which arrived yesterday which need filming too. Obviously the videos in the series will get a bit samey but I don't expect people will view every one in the series, just the one(s) which relate to the filter they have or are interested in buying for their tanks so hopefully I won't waste their time. BTW we have a marine version of biohome ultimate on the FilterPro site in 2 different sizes plus a marine version of the biogravel which seems to becoming popular even though it hasn't been shown in any videos yet.

Great video Richard, as always. Great to sit down with a coffee and watch them. I have a filter question, my canister filter has a UV steriliser lamp built in. In your opinion, having this turned on, will it harm beneficial bacteria such as the fragile anaerobic or aerobic? I can't find much info about this online. Cheers!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
As the UV light does not shine directly onto the media it won't affect the bacteria inside the media but it is advisable to leave it turned off for a couple of weeks if you're just setting up a filter as it will allow good bacteria to flow from tank to filter and back again. Once the filter is set up with bacteria and working well you can have the UV on all the time no problem.

Nice vid. So I've had a SunSun 304b and just bought a Pingkay 304b canister filter. They both have the same specs but when I plugged in the Pingkay I was surprised by the difference in flow rate. The Pingkay appeared to be nearly 3X stronger flow rate from the spray bar. Inlet and outlet tubes also have a superior feel to them. The one thing I don't like about them is that the trays aren't snug against the walls with slight gaps and allowing particles to bypass the filter media. Would make a pimping video on them? I was thinking of gluing a thin gasket around the tray walls to close the gaps. I'd like to know what you would you do though.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
There is generally a slight gap between the trays and the outer walls of the canister but as long as the trays fit together well enough there should be minimal bypass. That is surprising that the Pinkay 30b has more flow even with the same specs - I'm not familiar with that one.

Any suggestions are welcome

I've never quite understood the point of these larger internal filters. Internal filters on smaller tanks are good enough, but if you've got a tank big enough to fit this thing in, is there really any reason to get this instead of a canister?

If you have space for a canister then go for that over any internal filter as they offer way more scope for mechanical and biological filtration.

Although the early forms of biohome had 'official' porosity tests done on them I'm not sure what the exact method was. I'm doubt it would have been the mercury test though as testing filter media under high pressure doesn't replicate the real world conditions it is used in.

I have been watching your videos from way back when..and I've never seen you so upset over a filter 😅

And yet the canister filter and overhead trickle filters from Aqua One are very good...it is really frustrating that they put their name to such an awful internal filter. I've just shot a video on the Boyu EF-25 canister filter and that has me fuming since about 1/3 of the space inside it is just a void with no way of using the wasted space.

Pondguru that's why I'll just stick with my trusty chinese made trickle shower filter.. Been using it for years on my monster fishtank and never had a problem with it.. Plus it's cheap so it's definitely a win for me and my fishies lol.. And oh you did one hell of a job pimpin' that ugly thing it made my blood pressure go like 4000gph just looking at the breakdown of it.. :)) Love from the Philippines

lol, yes the overhead shower filters can offer an incredible amount of filtration and if anything goes wrong the water still ends up dropping into the tank, not flooding the house. They are really hard to get over in the UK which is very frustrating. I may have to get in contact with the factory which made the one I have to see what the minimum order would be for bringing them in (probably a container load) and making them readily available.

Pondguru wow that would be great if u could do that over there.. can you imagine how many crazy fish people (like us) 😅 will be lining up in your store? Also you could increase ur sales in foam and media since the package only contains the filter boxes and tubes.. Btw I got mine for like 15usd from a friend :))

Just follow the FilterPro link in video description and pinned comment - every page of the website has flags along the top which are direct links to suppliers around the world.

Thanks for that info.......... never realized that the flags would link you to other country sites !!! Your a great asset to the hobby....... only thing is I wish you would pimp out filters every day.......... lol ............ I love tinkering and have all the tools after almost 50 years of home remodeling and maintenance at USSteel and General Motors.

All sounds good to me and I'm just glad to have had the opportunity to do this series since it gives me the opportunity to get the dremmel out from time to time. It is one of those things which would just lie in the shed as I don't really have a purpose for it other than tinkering with filters. I'd make a filter pimping video every day as there are so many different filters to go at and people do search for specific filters on google when trying to find information on them. I have loads more already shot and ready to edit down into something watchable including a really good filter from Aqua One and an FX6

Hey buddy .where in us can I get those foams
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
You could try Greatwave Engineering but the dimpled foams seem to be very scarce in the US. That's all we have had over here for decades but they're generally available from suppliers of pond gear. Alternately I know there are plenty on amazon.com from China (of varying quality).

You'd be making a mistake if you did. It's a very good internal filter right out of the box
