There is a place for a butane lighter in your survival firemaking kit, but it shouldn't be the only firemaking method you carry. Here are a few tips to make a standard BIC mini lighter a better survival fire making tool.
Please order my book: "Bushcraft Basics: A Common Sense Wilderness Survival Handbook" at your local independent book store: www.indiebound.org/book/97815...
or on Amazon: tinyurl.com/bushcraft-basics-...
or at Barnes and Noble: tinyurl.com/Barnes-and-Noble
Thanks!

I was cringing when he was using the knife at the beginning. Use a flathead screwdriver so you don't cut yourself and wreck your knifes edge. Proper tool for the job!

Thanks for the good ideas. What I will add to this is that I'll glue the ring to the lighter with hot glue, so in case of using the tape the ring will stay attached to it.

Regarding the rubber band. Add two (or three). You can use two rubber bands with a long branch/hiking pole for mantracking. The first band (closest to tip) marks the stride length. The second (closest to grip) marks the heel/foot length. Details in Ab Taylor's book on mantracking.

is there an advantage to using a pop top over a paracord loop? just use para cord and rangerbands.

Good idea! The paracord could be used for fiber or whatever.

Rubber bands burn very well plus a bic lighter can work very well after ten mins in a bucket of cold water... So they are very good.. :-)

Excellent. I’d add a safe to avoid accidental discharge of the lighter. A plastic string passing right under the “gas pedal” of the Bic will do the job

Right. I'm surprised that Mr Survival "Common Sense" didn't think of something so simple.

another thing you could do to make it better and more windproof would be to loosen the valve by twisting the valve with some pliers it makes the flame come out larger and stronger and is therefore more resistant to wind and the elements

I'm a smoker and have used BIC lighters forever. They are cheap and convenient. However, if you are in windy conditions, it's worth it to have a freshly filled Zippo with you. They stand up to anything. Also can stand it up and let it burn for extended time flame.

I think there are variables that would affect the actual burn time. Generally speaking, I've found a mini BIC will burn about 45 minutes to an hour.

Great video! Love the idea about using tape around the lighter, and the bottle top idea was brilliant! Do you happen to know how long a brand new BIC lighter will last before all the butane evaporates?

Take a plastic pen and take the guts out. Now you have a small plastic tube. Wrap duct tape around and around as much as you want. Cut the length of pen body to the ends of the tape. Lace a Paracord thru the center for a loop.
