A lot of pinball machines at the time of the NY pinball ban didn't have any flippers, and it was closer to pachinko/plinko/bagatelle, so the gambling classification wasn't far-fetched. (It really was a game of luck)

@@MarvLoco absolutely! I've also realized that prior to experiencing real pinball machines I had already had the experience of kirby pinball, sonic spinball, Pokémon pinball, and that pinball that came with windows xp. I suppose that helped me practice before I moved to the real thing.

I thought it was random when I played the computer version, but I was like 8 and didn't know any better. I obviously understood "don't let the ball go down the middle" I just didn't know to read the instructions on which bumpers and combos did what.

For a while, pinball was almost regulated _as_ gambling, because lawmakers couldn't figure out the logic of it. I think the way people react with the flippers is very similar to people who'd never seen baseball or cricket or etc before, instead of waiting for the right moment, new kids often just swing the bat wildly and hope they hit. The fact that some things like pachinko are random but act like you have some control probably further makes people skeptical about how much control you really have, and tables like the Addams Family which had electromagnets all under the board could have furthered that more. People seem to think, sure I can hit it, but then it'll hit that bumper and chaos theory will come into play where the slightest difference in how they hit it leads to drastically different results. And you could probably build a pinball table like that if you really wanted to, but they're really carefully engineered to have clear "highways" of travel, places where if you don't get it up the ramp it will always drain coming back down, and so forth. The designers really understand all the ways the balls can move. And just like the video said, things like bumpers are often in small clusters where most of the action still keeps it in a corner - there are even often walls around these clusters of bumpers so there's only one or two ways in or out of them. But most people move from table to table, instead of taking the time to learn each table's quirks. The safe lanes don't always immediately stand out until you get used to a table. Like many others in the comments, it wasn't until trying some free play cabinets (and also highly realistic pinball sims like Pinball Arcade) that I learned any of this. When you only get 3 tries before you run out of coins, it can be difficult to begin perceiving these patterns. But if you've got a good enough grounding in pinball understanding, suddenly within a few games on a new-to-you paid table you're often getting replays every time, and suddenly the money doesn't matter that much anyway.

Each table has its own set of goals. Some are primary, some are secondary. In some cases, by completing modes, you might be working your way up to a bigger goal, like in Tales of the Arabian Nights. There, you complete modes to collect jewels. Get 7 jewels and you can fight the genie. Beat the genie and you beat the main goal, which is to rescue the princess.

i have a couple in my house, they are SO COMPLICATED. the rules are so deep and hard, and the engineering that has to be put into them is incredible

I was amazed by this as well but they did answer that. It's people who don't play pinball. Or at least, have played so little, so infrequently and so inattentively that they know nothing about it. You wouldn't be surprised if someone who played with a violin for a few minutes didn't figure out how to make music, and you wouldn't call them a violinist.

You can find Mom-n-Pop arcades still. I recommend playing an actual pinball machine over a video game version as they do feel dramatically different. They are challenging, but that is part of their charm. Do not get frustrated your first few plays. Study the board before you play or if possible, watch someone else play it first and you can notice how the flow and map work. Most importantly, have fun! Good luck

Keeping a ball in play is absolutely a key component to conquering a table but knowing the best sequence of shots, how to make them and ball manipulation with nudges and flipper techniques all add up to a pretty confident play on most pins. Learn the basic rules. Aim for a few goals and build as you go. It eventually clicks.

I mean probably not pinball machines aren't that common anymore there's like one in my entire town. It's like asking if I've used a pay phone

I’ve been a mad keen pinball player since my dad got me into it when I was a child, and though it’s a bit disheartening these days when an arcade will have one or two machines compared to 487 digital games, I’ve often explained to friends that it’s the organic realness of the game that is of such appeal. It’s just as you say...in pinball it’s a real ball that you’re controlling in real time & making real-life reactions occur on the playfield, rather than a largely pre-ordained set of actions & levels; of course, as with a video game, you’re trying to achieve certain goals, but it’s that realness factor that makes all the difference! Show me a one-dimensional video game that can compare to the thrill of real-life multiball...I still remember the Judge Dredd machine that had an 8-ball multiball - the exhilaration!! 🤩

So you haven't played a machine made after 1990? Yes you can play for points but most modern pins are mode based where you play different scenarios that build up to something bigger. There's what are called mini-wizard modes when you complete a certain number of tasks, then there is the final wizard mode that you get when you complete "all" tasks.

I think it's more that it's too damn easy to lose the balls. If it was harder to lose a balls, people would play more and have a chance to learn about the little details discussed in the video and care about their score. They are engineered to make money though, not provide a good time first. The lights, graphics, and noise are all part of enticing people to play. They are more common in bars now because they know people who are intoxicated are more likely to impulsively play, while they may be more reluctant when sober knowing the odds they will lose within a few minutes of starting are high.

Alison N But that's a huge problem to pinball manufacturers, keeping a balance between the casual users and pinball pros. If a game is too easy, operators will get less games being played because of greater sessions. OTOH, if the objectives are too simple, then the pin could be boring to the hardcore audience.

@@alicen2610 As a home collector there's certainly a skill set needed to get decent game time, espescially on an unknown table but the fundamentals always apply. It's a physics machine. Nothing more. Once you have the basics of ball control and shots, you can always manage a decent game. None "cheat" though some are harder, faster and thus more appealing to better players. Too easy and it's boring but good for beginners.

while true a lot of the time, I find that sometimes, stepping up to a machine with only a basic knowledge of the ruleset allows me to kind of figure the game out as I go, and I've had some of my best scores posted on first or second-time plays

I agree, that staying curios and to learn something new, that intrests you or to atleast try out things is probably Key to a fullfilled Life...self education is great too, but esspecially at more difficult things or if you habe trouble with motivation/getting through or done with something, an experienced tutor could help wonders. I also wouldn't say that institutional education is complete bullshit...yeah it has it's flaws...but it's a great system for teaching the basics and later on higher the bar of the basic education lvl. in a country. It's not the right way for everyone after the basics are learned, but with some work (talking about germany atleast) you could modernize that system just a bit and change that...e.g. If you let the students choose more of what they are intressted in and what they wanna learn, if you could make the school into a place were everyone could get to know themselfds,their intrest and abillitys, were you show those students what each field/class can teach them, let them choose were to learn deeper theories and were they just get teached the most important or a bit generialzed stuff.
