Forgotten Shine Restoration

Күн бұрын

I used many different techniques to restore an old pincers. In this restoration video I will file, use rust remover, drill, cut threads, cold bluing, use powder coating and use thread lock. I found this old tool in my barn and thought: "That would be great to restore this very rusty handtool" - Now the time has come!
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The pincers were so rusted that they couldn't be opened normally, so I used rust remover and a hammer, which unfortunately didn't work. The continued use of rust remover didn't help either, so I decided to saw off the bolt. Finally, with a pin punch, I completed the disassembly. I processed the contact surfaces, cutting edge and unevenness with the file. After masking the surfaces, I heated the components of the old rusted pincers to 200 ° C / 392 ° F and dusted them with powder paint. That color melted on the hot metal. I drilled a hole in the bolt and cut a thread into it and cold bluing. I made a small screw on a lathe and finished it in the restoration video. After applying grease, I was able to assemble everything and glue in the self-made screw with screw lock.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: hammer, rust remover, screwdriver, wire brush, file, vise, pliers, sandpaper, tape, key file, drill, thread cutter, cordless screwdriver, cutting oil, quick bluing, brush, oven, powder coating, knife, grease, thread lock
It took me about 9 hours to restore, without the paint drying time.
▬ Chapter ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
0:00 Look at rusty pincers
0:44 Disassemble
3:38 File bumps and surfaces
4:54 Masking for painting
5:11 Apply powder coating to pincers
6:30 Remove tape and excess paint
7:07 File and grind bolt
7:43 Cut thread in bolt
8:23 Finish the bolt
8:41 Bring quick bluing on bolt
9:10 Apply grease
9:26 Assembling the pliers

Fun fact: Those aren’t “pinchers” they are really old hoof clippers or nippersfor horses and cows. They have been heat treated and applying any more heat to them would render them useless for long term use.

I congratulate you on the many positive comments for this project. It definitely looks much better than when you started and now is functional. However, your methods leave much to be desired. I hope in the future you’ll get a sandblasted, because you sure could have used one on this project. It was hard to watch you beating and banging away trying to get the pinchers to open. There are many ways you could have tried instead of sawing off the main bolt. How long did you soak it in rust remover? Sometimes that takes a day or two to remove that much rust. Did you try electrolysis? Did you try heating the metal? Try to be more gentle and patient with your methods. I’m assuming you are new at restorations. Keep trying and you’ll improve. To see true restoration expertise, watch My Mechanics and some of the other veteran restorers and follow their lead. Good luck.

Hello amille223. Thank you for your detailed feedback and the honest words! I will definitely have to work on my approach, I have already recognized this construction site for myself. I haven't tried sandblasting and electrolysis because I don't have the equipment I need, but that too is about to change. The pincers were soaked in rust remover for a day. My demands on myself increase with each video, I think you can see that, for example in the quality of the video itself. As I said, I also work on the content! Of course, I also look at the other channels. I hope you will still see one or the other video of me and leave a detailed and constructive feedback (like here) ?! best regards

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I like to give new restorers food for thought and some good tips to add to their arsenal. You mentioned that you soaked the pinchers for a day. To help your viewers know that, it might be helpful to write that fact down below. If I had known that, I wouldn’t have made that comment to you. My apologies. Keep doing what you’re doing and, as with everything in life, you will get better and better. Best of luck to you always.

@daviddieudonne7829 2 жыл бұрын
@@amille223 although I agree with you and you’re absolutely right, what I kinda liked was actually the fact he didn’t use a sandblaster, nor electrolysis, heating was indeed an option he could have done. Just for the fact not everyone has those tools and this made it realistic or more achievable for those viewers. And also to have something different, as you mentioned my mechanics and others are already out there and are just unbelievable in their art, I actually thought it was a choice not to go down the same road. Still, very nice job and can’t wait for more stuff, keep it up.

Hello Armando. Many Thanks! I also thought about how to make the bolt for a long time, but decided to bluing it, because I was afraid that the paint would flake off when tightening the screw ...
