Coast guard boats are speeding between the chain of islands, slowly evacuating the population of nearly 9,000 people as Pine Island’s bridge was destroyed in the wake of Ian. NBC News’ Blayne Alexander and her team made it to Matlache to hear more from residents.

The storm was supposed to hit about 100 miles north in the Tampa Bay Area. Fort Myers, Naples & surrounding areas, like Pine Island should have known , from prior experience that the hurricane could turn inland at any point, as it did in the past. So, they may have had little time to get out once it became obvious that they would get a cat 4 hit.

They need a bell or loud siren to notify all. If you did not have an iPhone, I’m not sure how clear your direction to leave would have been. Strong loud Phone alerts helped but you must be in tune. Or that they would realize that, with most people having cell phones, cell phone towers would have gone down too. This is a good example of why they say hurricane preparation includes 5-7 days of food and water. In my case, for me and my cats. Even for those of us who did leave now we can't go home. Our homes are abandoned because there is no way to get on the island. Many of us stuck it out on Pine Island and started clearing access to boat launches on Wednesday and Thursday and began taking islanders into the Cape, as did Coast Guard, police and FWC. Private boaters, on their own dime, ferried residents to the mainland. We have great people down here who took care of each other and a special shout out to Honc Industries for their contributions. We've several organizations who, a month later, are still here providing essentials. Hard times don't build character, they expose it, and I'm so proud of my community and what they're made of. They were told to leave the barrier islands in FL. Plenty of time to call for help or find shelter inland. Every storm I see people stay when ordered to evacuate and then they are either killed or begging for rescue during the storm, risking others lives. No sense at all staying on a barrier island with a big storm like Ian.

Why didn’t they evacuate *before* the bridge was destroyed by the giant storm that they knew was coming for days? I suppose those of us who don’t live in such idyllic and foolish places will be the ones to foot the bill, as usual?

Wow. You can tell where the MONEY is! On Sanibel and Captiva, while they ignore Pine Island. Go figure, what a surprise! This is the first time I’ve heard about the devastation and the bridge being out! And there are a lot of people living in Matlacha , Bokeelia and pine island. And no one with Lee county government or The Feds has been there to offer help according to the ppl interviewed. WTH!?

What I have wondering is two fold. Where are they going to put all the construction and house trash from clean up, especially from the islands, and will this cause more homeowners insurance companies to leave Florida and/or increase our premiums?. Mine almost doubled this past year and the "special seesion" the state had in the Spring didn't do anything about it.
@robevans5222
@robevans5222 Жыл бұрын
Lynda, of course it will result in higher premiums or refusal to insure by insurance companies. Why shouldn't it? In a capitalistic society, companies cease to exist if their income doesn't at least cover their expenses. If insurance companies are to assume the risks that are inherent to properties, they must charge accordingly.

I guess that storm moving at less than 10 mph just snuck up on you out of nowhere, huh? And who would have ever guess that living on a barrier island 5ft above sea level would be a problem in a hurricane. Sorry .. not sorry. I live in tornado alley, where we might get 15 minutes notice, not 15 days.

Complaining because residents didn't listen to evacuation requests?! There are a lot of people impacted - they can't get to everyone at the same time. I'm sympathetic to the destruction of course but they could have done something to help themselves - EVACUATE when told to. Now the manpower that would be bringing them water and other necessities are spending them time evacuating everyone that should have done that before.

These people were told to evacuate before the storm... they decided they knew better... they are not injured nor frail... they should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps... They failed themselves... Authorities have life and death concerns; so, these people get no internet nor television nor A/C before their turn... swim or steal a boat which isn't sunk.
