One of my "secret weapons" in the kitchen is adding 1/4 to 1/2 cup of miracle whip to a batch of spaghetti sauce. I swear, it adds so much creamy depth and just a touch of tang that plays well with the acidity already in the tomatoes. My mom saw it in a magazine when I was a kid and used to make it. I suddenly remembered it a few years back and have been doing it since. Sounds weird, but is really good. Start with a 1/4 cup per quart of sauce for spaghetti, but if going for something baked and cheesy, go up to a 1/2 cup.

Emmy, the ambrosia you mention, all gloppy sweet, is not the original. I used to make this as a side for Thanksgiving: nice, juicy oranges, peeled. pith and membrane removed, juice reserved, layered with fresh, shredded coconut. One may add fresh pineapple, if desired. Fine sugar may be lightly sprinkled depending on the sweetness of the fruit. Dry sherry is lightly sprinkled. Pour over reserved juice, end with coconut and decorate with good quality maraschino cherries. I believe I found this recipe in one of Natalie Depree's terrific Southern cookbooks.

About candied cherries, I don't sure know how yours are made. But in Brazil, some bakers make them with chayote, cut in round shapes, cooked, soaked on sugar syrup and food coloring. Oh, you're gonna love this. I decided to make this. Now more than ever, since it's become an adventure. First..in the small town I live in, apparently, candied cherries (especially green ones) are a rare item. After searching 4 stores, I finally found some. Expensive little buggers. If I'd know this ahead of time, I could have had them shipped. (Actually, before I found them, and it being too late for shipping, I was going to resort to cherries and grapes from fruit cocktail..just kinda dry them off on paper towels. Hey I was desperate.) So, I have all ingredients assembled. Then I remembered Emmy saying "Toast your Nuts". Now, I'm not a nut person (nutty yes, but...) I've never toasted any nut. So, I cranked up the toaster oven. It defaulted to 20 minutes. I figured I check in on em every few minutes. I came out to the computer to look something up. Suddenly, I smell something burning. I rush to the kitchen for find the charred remains of my slivered almonds. The room full of smoke and house reeking. Oh joy. I live 15 miles from town. I did not want to go back in. Thankfully, a friend was still in town, and is coming to my rescue. Now I'm wondering what else can go wrong. ??? After all of this, it better taste awesome, and everyone better love it. Y'all have a Very Merry Christmas!! UPDATE: Well, it's looking good. Got it ready to go. One thing I did do, that made this really easy to get out of the can, was line the in sides with wax paper, and a piece at the top. After running hot water over the outside of the can for a few minutes, I turned it upside down and tapped the bottom & sides. It slid right out. With the wax paper still around it, made it less messy to handle getting it to the nuts. Now I can use the can again, since I didn't have to cut off the end.

Great job! My grandmother made a savory version of this with cream cheese, pineapple, almonds, chopped red bell pepper, green onion, and garlic.

Miracle whip, cream, canned fruit salad (drained, this is also optional and can be replaced with meat like chicken strips, bacon or chopped ham) and macaroni. My mom used to make this every christmas when I was a kid. Sometimes she omit the fruit salad and make a salad out of it (canned fruit salad (drained), grated coconut, cream, condensed milk, kaong and nata de coco).

This reminds me of what my grandma calls Apple salad. She takes apples (any variety), grapes, bananas, raisins, walnuts, mini marshmallows and celery. She slices them into small pieces. Then she takes mayo, milk, and sugar and makes a sort of sauce that she pours over, just enough to sort of make it all come together. It’s one of my favorites! This video reminds me of her and makes me smile, we laid her to rest today so I really needed that. Thank you! ❤️

My great aunt used to make something like this. She was eccentric and fabulous and had purple hair before it was actually “in”...I remember my grandmother saying “Ethel is good at a lot of things...but not cooking.” Hahaha!

I've been sugar preserving my citrus fruits for the last month or so; Wow, so wonderful in baked goods! I made orange cranberry muffins with my orange preserves, just delish! It's so easy to do too: just layer a slice of two of fruit in a sterilized jar, cover with equal amount of sugar, fill jar ending with sugar. Let stand three weeks before using, shake every day or so. Doesn't need to be refrigerated either, although you can. Merry Christmas to you and yours, thanks for all the great videos!
