o_o I can actually remember my paternal grandmother making this one year for us kids on thanksgiving because we didn't want turkey or ham. She added shredded carrots and some really thinly sliced onion to the cabbage. I remember it being pretty good, seeing as how myself and all my cousins (11 of us total including my sister) were pretty rabid hotdog fiends back then. Thank you for the memory :)

"Is that all you're gonna put on it?" Emmy, it's diet food. You're supposed to hate yourself while you eat it for daring to need food while being fat. If you avoid enjoying food for long enough and hate yourself enough, you'll someday be thin and totally have a perfect life. Oh also give weight watchers all your money.

When I was a kid, my mom made sauerkraut and hot dog casserole. It had a sauce made of sauteed onions, brown sugar, mustard and catsup. The actual name of the recipe was Maxie's Franks and it came from The I Hate to Cook Book (great for retro recipes), by Peg Bracken. I liked it and still make it occasionally.

Your retro recipe series is very similar to a cooking blog project which existed here in Sweden and which became a cookbook/humour project. It was called The Brown Food and the "Brown Family" cooked from recipe cards from the 70s/80s which were left in some elderly person's drawers. They cooked and ate a meal a week or so, detailing the experience in a very humorous way. It was quite hilarious and usually horrendous.

This sounds like a retro version of a meal my family makes. We usually do a casserole dish full of cabbage, potatoes(boiled to 60% done), a favorite sausage or brat, I like something a little spicy and salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar and a little water or chicken or veggie stock to make sure it cooks evenly. It is honestly delicious and you should try it. Or if you're being lazy just throw everything into an instapot or pressure cooker.

Make creamed chipped beef on toast. My grandma was born in 1916 her mom used to make this and she made it for me growing up but would laugh and say how she "couldn't stand it back when they had to eat it" Also my aunt made me a awesome sandwich back when I was about 7.. I'm 21 for the 20th time now. But we were broke out of pretty much everything.. she sliced green bell peppers fried them in butter with salt n pepper and served them on toasted raisin bread. I swear it is surprisingly delicious.. even when your not hungry lol

I think that hot dogs were a big thing in the diet world there for a while. As a girl in the 70's I was fed chicken hotdogs that had been sliced super thin, lengthwise and then dry-fried in a pan and sprinkled with bacon salt to mimic bacon. Thinking back now, it sounds gag-worthy but at the time I liked it. It was part of The Diet Center's diet.

You should try homemade soda jelly. Or jelly made from soda. I have made it and my kids loved it. Put it on toast, bread, pancakes or French toast. 2 cups of any soda (not diet) orange soda, mountain dew, root beer all work great. 3 cups of sugar 1 package of liquid pectin Bring the soda and sugar to a rapid boil let boil for 1 minute. Then add liquid pectin and return it to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Pour into sterilized jars screw on the covers and boil the jars about 5-10 minutes. Enjoy jelly on pancakes, French toast or sandwiches

Recipes like this comes from an era where people got creative with cheap ingredients to feed the entire family. A ton of the meat markets were staffed by german immigrants and "anything sausage / sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)" came from them. People always asked the meat cutters for recipes and ideas on how, what to cook for little $$$$$

Interesting recipe for sure. I wonder what their cooking or recipe preparing department was smoking when they came up with this one? Lol! Or was it sent to them by a faithful weight watcher? In any case, my mom was a weight watcher, lost her weight and actually went to work for them, hosting meetings, weigh ins etc. I'm definitely sharing this with her. Lol! Thanks for the cooking showcase Emmy. It was sickenly awesome. I am a fairly new subscriber to your channel and I am so glad I found you. It was your Japanese Jiggly Cheesecake that caught my eye. My son loves everything Japanese and was saddened when on his birthday, May 5th, my bff made his cheesecake. It wasn't a real cheesecake but one of those no bake ones...so disappointed. 😢 So I've been reviewing recipes to make him a delightful, yummy one that's real. When I saw your post I couldn't help but watch. I have fallen in love with you! You are a kick. You are a breath of fresh air and way more personality than any chef on TV or that I've ever seen.
