Uh oh...owner of this 2008 Volvo S60 Turbo says it started to run really BAD.
This Volvo has gone 50k HARD miles since it swallowed it's PCV valve and damaged cylinder 1 two years ago.
Finally, the exhaust valve on cylinder 1 burned completely through and the car is no longer driveable.
Nothing left to do but tear off the cylinder head and replace the busted valves!

I had something like that on my 1991 Honda Civic 1600 single cam 16 valve. Sometime in the past the centre electrode insulator had broken on one spark plug and the piece had gone out the exhaust, denting one valve and its seat. At 354,000 km, it finally dropped a chunk of that valve and went onto 3 cylinders. One new valve and a quick regrind and it was back on the road and good as new, till I sold the car at 375,000 km.

The Volvo 5 cylinder is actually a very good design engine, it arrived on the US back in 1993.
@jannepo
@jannepo Жыл бұрын
It was designed together with Porche in the late 1980's. That time Porche had financial difficulties and had to sell it's "secrets" by consulting other companies like Seat (VAG) and Volvo. Result was this Volvo modular engine 4/5/6 cylinders, manufactured from 1991 to 2016. No wonder that after 20 years the engine in this car is very reliable and has good performance too. Fuel consumption is the weak point of Volvos, but it is also due weight of the car (safety). My V70 with this engine (B5244T3) gets as low as 30 MPG at steady 60 MPH. Weaknesses are the random auxiliaries, like valve which grenated this engine. Mangeti Mareilli throttle body etc.

I love those 5 cylinder engines! I had one in a 06 XC70 from 125K to almost 200K. During this time I was the only person to work on the car, it never went to a mechanic for anything. I did the PCV system, a rather difficult job. I also did cam seals to stop a large leak, at first with no success. Those seals ride on the lip of the VVT pulleys, my exhaust pulley had excessive in and out play and was moving the sealing surface beyond the seal. I do recommend doing those seals and checking the pulleys for end play. As I am watching this, I feel like I am back under the hood of my XC. Those cams have no key, if you pull the complete VVT pulleys off it requires an alignment tool. Nice work getting that valve cover off!

@jimmyaber5920

Sodium valves are a normal valve but the valve stem has a 1mm bore inside and sodium powder is inside. When the temp is high enough the sodium liquefies and becomes sloshing coolant to take heat from valve up into the stem where it can be conducted to guides which are in coolant cooled part of head. Hardened valves on turbo engines often fail to look like a cutting torch cut.

The only comment I would like to give (maybe said before) I was taught that if you are re-using the head bolts is to have a piece of cardboard & mark the front & place the bolts in order that they were in when taken out (1through to5/6 front to back as they should be replaced in order of extraction .Obivisouly if they are being replaced this does not matter.Many vehicles specifiy that new ones must be used. It's unfortunate that this was recorded a while ago, that car needs a set of valve stem seals. When they leak, the carbon builds up, doesn't let the valves completely close, and the exhaust gases cut a groove in the valve. Maybe they will get replaced in the next exciting episode.

Thant is because hardly anybody has seen the inside of a volvo 5 cyl before. I work on them, and since 1993, when the white block engines came out. I've had the head off exactly ONE. It was because he ran it with a failed water pump till the timing belt stripped and bent every valve. Well, I think 3 or 4 weren't, but by that time, all get replaced. A very tough and well engineered engine using top quality components. Common as dirt in Seattle area, and the Northwest in general. And please, people, notice I said NOTHING about the plastic used in the interior, so don't go on about "well MY volvo had broken plastic from day one. " We all know the plastic didn't live a long and healthy life. I'm not sure anyone even knows the upper limit of life on a well cared for white block engine. It will easily outlive the Toyota (Asin Warner) tranny. That is good engineering. I've got red block customers with well over 500kmi on their 240's, and the later cars were hands down more durable.

You can use 7mm threaded rod and nuts at 4 places screwed into removed cover bolts to control cover lift. 7mm all-thread is a bit hard to find but nut abd bolt supply stores have it as does Amazon.

Does that oil just look especially red from here, or is it some special swedish blend, or was ATF put in there for some esoteric reason?

I have not watched all of the video. But you should use the hold down/removal tool fore the valve cover becuse the valve cover can crack/ damage camshaft. And use volvo selant on the valve cover. We have found out that its the onley one that works in the long run.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis Жыл бұрын
I agree, these valve covers can crack if you don't follow the correct procedure. Undoing the bolts a little at a time until all the pressure is released minimises the risk but is quite time consuming.

common fault the aux drive belt can shred the edge of the balt then drop to crank pully wrap around and work it way under the crankshaft timing belt over crank pully and cause timing to slip and then pistons hit the valves so change aux belt regular inspect and clean belt debris done a few volvo 5 cyl s

Just a note on the design. Apparently Volvo took that into account, but I'm rather surprised that a high-output, turbocharged engine like that would only have four head bolts surrounding each cylinder, as opposed to five.

Hello Ivan, Great video as always. Have a Q: Could excess vacuum (neg pressure) at intake be cause by the turbo? No high pressure from exhaust to spool it results in intake restriction. P-Chi

As I will be doing this job shortly, great video. One question though. You keep referencing a broken pcv valve. These cars do not have pcv valves. I guess I will find out in the next videos as to what may have caused this.

It's actually the pcv banjo bolt he's referring to. He showed it in his second video involving this particular car

Would heating the cylinder head up make it easier for removal where those dowels were? I wonder if heat and cold shock would work without cracking the head.
