The High Price of Progress - Islanders vs Maple Leafs, 2002 ECQF (RE-UPLOAD)

Күн бұрын

To advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a heavy physical toll is incurred as the result of a full-contact game, and hoisting the greatest trophy in all of sports is impossible without braving that gauntlet.
To advance as a sport, sometimes rules that prevent harm cannot exist until harm is done in a way that has not been addressed before. In other words, sometimes progress - by necessity - comes at a price.
In 2002, the New York Islanders and the Toronto Maple Leafs learned just how much they would have to sacrifice to realize both of these ends.

Sorry about the re-upload, everybody. I had to remove some """"unsuitable"""" content (the Corson/Cairns fight). Aside from the fights removed, this version is exactly the same as the prior video, plus some minor corrections. A video to the full tilt is linked at the corresponding section of Game 6. EDIT: Demonetized again! :')

I mentioned it in the comments of the last video, but this series really did their core in pre-maturely. A fully healthy Peca and Jonsson likely mean the Islanders don’t have to face Ottawa in 2003 or Tampa Bay in 2004 and might’ve actually had a chance to win a round, maybe even go deep by 2004 when DiPietro came into his own

This Isles team was the reason to me that the Leafs didn't make the finals in 2002; this was the most physical first round series i've ever seen in my life. By the time Toronto got to Carolina, they were beat the hell up.
@jessewahwah

Kind of but not really. Leafs had a lot of players hurt and were winning without them. Alyn McCauley and Gary Roberts were playing like they had played together their whole lives. DYNAMITE together. Everyone was working their asses off. We got to the semi's against Carolina and MAGICALLY all of our players were healed. First and foremost was Mats Sundin, who stepped back into the 1st line and broke McCauley and Roberts up. That was the beginning of the end................

One perfect series to show why the old arenas had such a gravity to them. Fort Neverlose, the Joe, and the Igloo all allowed fans to make the series their own. And also, Dave and Neil in game 4 with much better announcing than what they're given credit for.

@@PinholesGraham Awesome! My favorite quote about the series was "You'd ask people what the differences were and they couldn't come up with any!" Even for an absolute nerd like me who find all of the bullcrap details possible. Both teams finished one spot behind the Senators (for the Sabres it was in the division for the Canes it was in the Conference), both teams beat their first round opponent in six games *and* beat their second round opponent in five games (hell, the structure of the five game series was the same for both: WWWLW), both goalies were playing their first playoff hockey, their colors were the same, their styles were identical...what a great series.

If the Leafs had resigned Steve Thomas they might have gone to the Stanley Cup Finals. 3/6 games in their Carolina series went to overtime. They could have used Thomas' overtime heroics that carried Toronto past Ottawa in years prior and helped Anaheim to the Finals.

As a Leafs fan the atmosphere in Toronto is a joke, real fans have been priced out for decades now. It's probably not cheap at the new arena anymore but I imagine in 2002 Long Island, real blue collar fans could actually get in the building and get good seats. That plus the small size and intimacy makes for a tremendous atmosphere. A Leafs road game in Buffalo or Ottawa has a better atmosphere than a home game. It's sad

Alyn McCauley had 16 points in 82 games that season. The guy had offensive talent but Put Pat Quinn wasn't interested in giving him a shot. Mats Sundin got hurt in this series and McCauley was bumped up to 1st line center and was playing with Gary Roberts. The 2 were fucking magic together. Alyn McCauley had 15 points in 13 playoff games while playing with Roberts while Mats was out for half of this series, and all of the next one against Ottawa. Toronto (as per universal laws) dumped Ottawa from the playoffs and moved into the semi's against Carolina. Mats was still out. McCauley and Roberts were together for a game 1 win. Mats Sundin came back for game 2. Pat Quinn left Roberts and McCauley together and they both picked up a point, but the Leafs lost. And that was it. McCauley started sliding up and down the lineup again in game 3. Him and Roberts were broken up. From that point on in the next 4 games neither picked up a single point as Carolina beat Toronto in 6 games. Before they were together Alyn McCauley played little as 7 minutes against the Islanders. With Roberts he was averaging over 20 and played 35 minutes in an 3OT classic against The Sens. By the time Carolina ended Toronto's season McCauley was back down to 17 minutes. Pat Quinn caught lightning in a bottle and somehow didn't realize it. As soon as Toronto lost he went back to the status quo and it cost us.

Maybe it’s the islanders bias but I think there are 3 kinds of barns in the NHL: barns that are quiet but can get loud, barns that are loud, and barns that aren’t just loud but are alive as if you can feel the building breathe with every play and stoppage. Nassau Coliseum was one of those buildings that breathed even when the Islanders stunk. Maybe it’s the low ceilings in the 300’s, maybe it’s the history but Nassau was alive.

I'm still upset that the Islanders didn't pull this off. The Toronto series against Ottawa in Round 2 broke me. Ottawa was up 2-0 in Game 6, set to eliminate the "Leaves", then Ricard Persson took the dumbest major penalty in team history and blew the lead for us. The Sens never got proper satisfaction against Sundin-era TML despite being the better team in all 4 series (as I recall).
