"Pink Elephants on Parade" is a song and scene from the 1941 Disney animated feature film Dumbo in which Dumbo and Timothy Q. Mouse, having accidentally become intoxicated (through drinking water spiked with champagne), see pink elephants sing, dance, and play marching band instruments during an hallucination sequence. The song was written by Oliver Wallace and Ned Washington and sung by Mel Blanc, Thurl Ravenscroft and The Sportsmen. The segment was directed by Norman Ferguson, laid out by Ken O'Connor and animated by Hicks Lokey, Frank Thomas, Karl Van Leuven, and Howard Swift.

I just thought of a Peanuts cartoon that freaked me out as a kid. Snoopy had a nightmare that he was a sled dog. He was abused by his owner and the other dogs. Eventually he snapped and turned into a badass. They animated him to look more like a wolf. I dunno if it was scary, but it def freaked me out. Def out of the normal for Peanuts. Anyone else remember this?

I honestly don't understand why people get so upset about the crows.. yea they're clearly meant to black, and yea they speak in jive, but that was the lingo of time among the hippest cats and all the cool kids wanted to be able to spit that jive.. it's just a representation of the time periods pop culture.. in 50 years are people going to get upset black characters in movies made today get portrayed as having an affinity for stylish urban apparel and has a strong fondness for rap music? Characters in movies are a reflection of the culture during the time period it was made the crows get portrayed the way they do because it was the style.. in 50 years movies like Friday will be banned for being showing black Characters as stereotypes and clearly black animated characters depicting black culture like the gospel singing oracles in Hercules will be edited out

Yes, Disney figured the best way to cheer up the audience after punching them in the heart with "Baby of Mine" was to show that baby elephant getting drunk(let's be real; he was tripping balls, there are some hallucinogenic mushrooms in FL) and having strange and frightening hallucinations! "Pink Elephants" made me a musician. Not kidding. As a child it was my favorite part of the film and I didn't know why. I would play it on repeat. There was something about the tuba... Decades later as a percussionist I now know. That was the first time ever an instrument in a song made me notice a steady 4/4 beat. It's punchy quarter notes kept me invested EVERY SECOND IN EVERY BEAT. It's crazy to say THIS is why I percussion. I WANTED TO BE THE ONE KEEPING A SOLID BEAT FOR THE BAND. These days, I play BASS DRUM for marches in my band and Timpani for symphonies. As a kid I did try tuba, but I quickly learned the DRUMS were the REAL beat keeps...

This scene was the reason I didn't watch Dumbo very often as a kid. There were scenes in other movies that scared me, but this was my pissed pants, eyes covered moment growing up. I think literally every frame scared me to some capacity. Plus, I'm surprised no one's brought up how disturbing some of the imagery is. For example, the elephants enter by peering into a window and then marching in like home intruders. They dance around what looks like a hospital bed, their skeletons flashing. THERE IS ONE MADE OUT OF HEADS. Nowadays, I'm impressed by this scene... and still disturbed.
@overlydramaticpanda
@overlydramaticpanda 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually not their skeletons that are flashing (though I thought it was for years). But if you look at it closely enough (and if you pause it at the right time), you can see that the yellow flashes are actually forming the braiding of a typical marching band uniform like the jacket Timothy Mouse wears throughout the film. That being said, the scene is still pretty damn nightmare-inducing, especially for a kid. The thing made entirely of elephant heads especially; the heads all just look so *malevolent* ... The two that start as snakes and then pass through each other and meld together before exploding always freaks me out as well, particularly since you get that evil laugh as they explode.

Originally part o the second Pooh short from 1968, WINNIE THE POOH & THE BLUSTERY DAY. THanls for mentioning it. Note thaty Pooh has his own dark ride with the scnee while all DUmbo and Timothy Mouse got was a round-trip flight, with no dark ride of their won with a Pink Elephant scene. Also, speaking of earlier Disney, PINNOCHIO., Non-Disney, some of the original FLINSTONES episodes, like where the babies got voices and sang, the scene before it ends with a happy surprise edning..where the boys try to escase the Beatle promotoer and the girls AND the cops on the freeway cloverlead is pretty scary. Entire Flinstone episodes like DR>SINISTER and IMPRACTICAL JOKER (with Fred constantly panicing about being imprisonied by associateion with (non-)counterfeiter Barney, and then the boys being held at gunpont by a crook (another surprise ending).Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer:BOTTLES,1936, as I already menton Warner Bros:PIGS IS PIGS (no relation to the later Disney film):a little piggy dreams he's force fed food. This was so unique and awesome. I remember that I loved it as a kid, and I remember having a theory for the imagery, that this was all inspired by things Dumbo had seen in the circus and his own fears and experiences all mashed together. Like, the elephant-man made of elephant heads-I thought maybe that was a representation of the other elephants ganging up on him to bully him, with a dash of those kids that picked on him to the point that his mom got mad and then was taken away from him by the Ringmaster and workers. Perhaps the Middle-Eastern imagery could have come from another act, and the cars and trains are inspired by themed vehicles used in performances. A circus is all about flash and bright colors and pizazz, and showing off amazing things that people might not see anywhere else; furthermore, we never see more than one single act this circus put on (unless you figure in the Dumbo’s Circus TV show). Regardless of whether my childhood theory holds water or not, the sequence was easily my favorite part of the film, to the point where I used to rewind the tape and watch just that part over and over again. Some of my classmates, though, were freaked out to the point of being scared of it. Even my little sister refused to watch it as a kid because it weirded her out so much. I always thought this was not just some anti-booze message, but also a way for the animators on the movie to just let loose. The rest of Dumbo alternates between sickly-sweet and heartbreaking, so I thought this let the artists just give the audience-and themselves-a break from the emotional roller coaster with something utterly ridiculous yet gorgeous that had no real impact on the story, other than allowing Dumbo to wake up in a position to discover his unique talent. The higher stuff aside, this is just plain fun to watch, and I consider it one of the most unique things Disney has ever created. Even the song is unlike any of their typical fare, creepy yet fun in its own surreal way.

Wow Doug, I think this episode, and the Dark Toons series as a whole, shows just how much of a gift you have in analyzing how and why certain components of animation works so effectively! It's a great change of pace from your usual Nostalgia Critic series, where the criticisms are mostly negative, because here, your positive comments on all these Dark Toons show a whole level of appreciation of how something even as little as the color of lighting can affect the emotional impact from the imagery. I now can appreciate this one sequence in Dumbo to the extent of anything made by Picasso!

Think of it from the point of view of a kid. I was 5 when I first saw Dumbo. There's this black background with disembodied voices singing in the strangest of pitches--up and down, up and down--it's unnatural to say the least. Too high and too low. Then there's the damn elephants--elephants aren't supposed to be plaid or polka dotted or transparent with beady black eyes staring at you soullessly. I hated it as a kid when cartoon characters turned different colors than they normally were. So Dumbo's face turning bright red after getting drunk didn't help in the least.
