Just wanted to pin a comment here real quick to say a couple things: I'm on holiday atm (waiting to board as I write this) and I'll be away until the 10th of Sep (I have Wi-Fi though so I'll still reply to comments). I just wanted to mention this here since a lot of new people seem to be coming to this video so figured I'd just mention that there won't be videos until I get back on the 10th. From then though, I'm strapped in and ready to go on a hell of a journey with you guys! Another thing I wanted to ask, specifically of this song is how do you interpret the lyrics? I've really enjoyed reading people's interpretations and explanations so far but I've noticed that I've had the whole spectrum as far as reacting to my analysis. I've been told I was spot on, I gave a good breakdown but missed a few things, all the way down to being told I was completely wrong and had "no clue" so it seems like this song in particular is pretty open to interpretation. Which is awesome! I'd be interested to hear more about how you guys, personally have taken the lyrics and message of this song! Lastly, I just wanted to say a huge thanks for all the crazy amount of support these reaction videos have been getting. It's been such a great welcome to the metal/rock community and I'm excited to explore the genre much more. Plus, I have plenty plenty of suggestions to go through now so thank you as well for those! And keep them coming! Sorry for disappearing (upload wise) for 10 days out of the blue but as soon as I'm back, we're getting to it. Thanks all again, I'll see you soon!

Congratulations. You have now discovered the greatest band of all time. I hope you go through and listen to some more of their music. The Dark Side Of The Moon Wish You Were Here Animals The Wall. Some bands have one amazing album, maybe two. Pink Floyd had four, plus plenty of great ones as well. Enjoy!

Oh don't worry, it'd be hard not to check out more after listening to this as a starting point! I've heard a lot about their music being quite album centric and that a lot of their songs make more sense with the context of the album surrounding it so I think I'm going to try to incorporate that a bit more going forward with them. Not quite sure how yet but I'll work on it! I'm also going to try and watch the Wall film at some point too!

You should take a look at the Pulse (live) video. The solo's on Comfortably Numb in that concert were amazing. As far as Comfortably Numb goes, it's one track on "The Wall." Pink Floyd's albums tell a story so you should really listen to the entire album. If you liked that one, take a look at Dark Side of the Moon, arguably one of the best albums ever made.

I appreciate that you have so much to say, and you're not too far off the mark in your analysis but you're overthinking it. In the context of The Wall he is the rock star before the show, over the edge physically and emotionally. His manager (played by Bob Hoskins BTW) and the doctor are trying to get him up for the show. He is somewhere else and reluctant to come back because numb is better than in pain. He doesn't need more drugs but the show must go on. If you really listen to the solo it doesn't sound like he's numb but more that he's in pain but has temporarily suppressed it.Definitely listen to the whole album and watch the movie. Brilliant.

As I’m sure you know, this song is part of the album “The Wall”. All of the songs on the album are tied together. Knowing the other songs helps with the context and meaning of this song. You may know this, there is a movie containing all of the songs from the album. I definitely recommend watching it at some point.

The song is about a band member being completely burned out and the tour's "Dr. Feelgood" asking him questions and giving him an injection of narcotics so he can gather himself together to perform. The numbness brought on by the drugs he's given reminds him of when he had a severe fever ((high fever can cause a person to experience dementia and become dissociated from reality). Once the drugs fully kick in, he feels "comfortably numb." He no longer feels any pain (or anything else).

About the orchestral feel: Pink Floyd was a 4 (5) man band, but they never let themselves be limited by themselves. They are the modern equivalent of groundbreaking classical composers. IMHO, their music will live on for at least the next two centuries. There will be Pink Floyd concerts in 2107, like there are Bach or Mozart concerts now.

Yeah I agree and I think it's a great way to approach making music. Any artist who generally allows themselves to evolve and mature musically and change their sounds definitely tends to stick around much longer. There's only so much you can do musically when you limit yourself. It's a creative process, why not let your creativity flourish?

One of the lyrics' origins was Roger Waters' sickness with a fever as a child. He said in an interview for Mojo magazine 2009, "I remember having the flu or something, an infection with a temperature of 105 and being delirious." Later in life Roger Waters' experience of being injected with tranquilizers also inspired this song's lyrics. A doctor gave him some medication for stomach pain before a show in Philadelphia in the 1977. Water later said, "That was the longest two hours of my life trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm."

Now that you have heard Pink Floyd their music is working inside of you. You will never be quite the same. Welcome my son, to the machine. One of the earlier albums is The Dark Side of the Moon. The Dark Side of the Moon produced two singles: "Money" and "Us and Them". The album topped the Billboard chart for one week, and remained on the chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. Following a change in Billboard's chart methodology in 2009, it re-entered the chart and has since appeared for over 900 weeks. With estimated sales of over 45 million copies, it is Pink Floyd's bestselling album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has been remastered and re-released several times, and covered in its entirety by several acts. It is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.

This song is from the album "The Wall". The entire album tells the story of a man called Pink. He is mentally and emotionally damaged, due to his life from childhood. The album details his life from a young age. He eventually becomes a rock musician. The titular "Wall" refers to the mental walls we can build up. This song in particular is talking about just before a concert, and Pink is lost in his mind, he has grown numb from his emotional issues, and it's a comfortable feeling that let's him not think or care about his troubles. He is basically just mentally spaced out with little attention being given to the outside world. He mentions that his private Dr who is talking to him, is fading in and out of his perception, the words he hears are coming and going like waves, only hearing bits of what the Dr says. And that the Dr seems distant and far away rather than being there next to him. The Dr gives him a medication to get him on his feet and able to perform on stage. The reference to childhood and a fever, is referring to a feeling of being very sick, and your mind kind of shutting down so that everything feels numb and strange, but you are also not feeling the misery of the symptoms from the illness. Apparently the band member that wrote this song had a similar experience as a child, he was very sick but he kind of spaced out mentally and was just numb and no longer feeling bad from the illness, but also not quite all there in the head. His hands felt odd like they were just big balloons and not part of his body. He uses that as a metaphor for the feeling of the character on the song.

He fried his brain and David Gilmore stepped in. God Bless You Syd.

Our imagination was what we had. I was aware of Syd, and Gilmore coming into the band. I had always assumed they were heavy drug users until 10 or 15 years ago when reading an interview that Roger Waters had given, putting the drug rumors to rest. As for the song Roger Waters did write the lyrics after his experience with being injected with tranquilizer before a show. No fun that night.

Rodney Lonczynski if I remember right it’s a mix of being anti war because of losing his father to the war when he was a child .... as heard in some of the lyrics like “daddies gone, across the ocean, leaving just a memory...” refers to his father going off to war. So parts of it is about growing up without a father who he lost from the war. Also parts of it is about how Waters was isolating and distancing himself from the fans as everyone just wanted things from him (music, etc), hence he was building a wall between him and others.

Roger Waters explained he had to do a show in New York, and he had some kind of stomach thing that was causing horrible pain. A doctor came up and gave him an injection, which relieved the pain and he was able to do the show that night. Also, he and Dave Gilmour argued over this song. Roger wanted the song to be simple, while Dave wanted an orchestral song. They sent two demos to the producers, who merged the two versions. Roger sings the main verses, and Dave (and Rick Wright) sing the more orchestral choruses.

on the drug comment: at least according to them in interviews, they never did drugs past alcohol. the founding member of the band, Syd Barrett, famously did do drugs, particularly LSD, which helped his schizophrenia get worse and worse. many of Pink Floyd's songs are about Syd, or dedicated to him. this one might be a bit, i haven't done my research that deeply. i think it's more about downers and uppers, which is sort of apparent from the flow of the song. Syd left or got kicked out of the band early, around 1968, but Pink Floyd kept doing Syd's kind of thing, like performing live with lights/colors/lasers.

Ahh okay, thanks. I figured it was something along those lines but I wasn't sure if it was something specific he was referencing. I'm gonna need to rethink how I approach Pink Floyd from what I've learnt so far. It seems from the comments that a lot of their music is album context oriented and a lot of songs mean more sensically within the context of the album it's on. I know at the very least I need to watch the film for this album but we'll take it one project at a time for now! Thanks for the comment :)

Yetiness Can Tottenham have a History season. Or is it just that Manchester United have become such an average Premier League side these days.

I think your analysis is really on point. It's impressive in such a young man. I hope that didn't come across as condescending.

Concerning drug abuse, one of Pink Floyd's founding members, Syd Barrett, was kicked out of the band long before this album came out. He had apparently heavily abused psychadelic drugs, which caused lots of problems. So who knows what the other members of the band did concerning drugs. But no doubt they understood all about the pressures and pitfalls of show business.

You should react to either Panic Attack or Home both by dream theater, they're both insane

First time so far anyone's suggested Dream Theater actually but I have heard of them. The list is starting to look quite diverse. Thanks for the suggestion!

My god, man, you need to watch the Pink Floyd Pulse version of this song to know develop true appreciation for David Gilmour's god-like guitar talents. Other than that, well done indeed, mate.

I definitely will! It's come up a lot in the comments so I think I'll probably slot it in between after finishing going through Dark Side of the Moon but before I start the next album. I'll do it though for sure!

Roger Waters said he was sick on the day of a concert so a dr came to see him at his hotel and he gave him something a little too strong. He is describing how he felt being given a shot of something to help make it through the show.

Right. And he related it to having a fever as a child. The fever made him out of it and that is how he felt when they gave him the medicine. He said he doesn't know what they gave him. I'm sure it was some kind of illegal drug.

a fever so high (103-105F) causes Fever Dreams in which one hallucinates part of which is body distortions (hands feel like 2 balloons) -- as for the Orchestral feel.. it's a an Autobiographical Rock Opera by & about Roger Waters WALLING Himself off from reality ( forced to be a Rock STAR - losing his wife, relationships, family, what school masters did to him) that he could no longer deal with...

Just a "heads up", but with slower songs like this, it may be more comfortable and fitting to sway your head every half note rather than bobbing it every quarter beat. Just a small nit pick.

No orchestra required.. If you're amazed at what guitarists can do. You should listen to Difficult to Cure / Rainbow ( *Ritchie Blackmore, originally from Deep Purple* ) He plays Beethoven's ninth. And again, no orchestra required..

Rodger Waters says it was a fever as a child and then the same one. However, even though he wrote the song I am skeptical and I concur with you. Make a sort of similar comparison on how no band member will ever disclose the meaning of Bohemian Rhapsody. Two very subjective songs.
