The Pulse concert is a must for a live version of this song. Not only do they sound wonderful, but the light show they had going during the song was amazing in itself. David Gilmour's solos are out of this world.

Everytime I hear this song I alternatingly want to weep and laugh. After almost 43 years I've come to regard it as a 'prayer' of sorts, a 'liturgy' in some sense. It is imperative that I experience Comfortably Numb at least once a week, with earphones.

I get not reacting to a song for the first time live, that the studio version is better, but, this is the exception. The Pulse concert performance is (in my biased opinion) the best live performance of a song ever. As for the solo live… you’ll see why it should be this version.

I graduated from high school in 1980, we picked "The Wall" for our senior song. When the printed programs came, and the teachers saw the lyrics to the song, they made us glue the pages together so that no one could see it at graduation. Kind of proved the message of the song.

I think it was wise to start with the original song rather than the live version. Many of the reactions on KZfaq start with the live version. But it was this version that dominated rock radio back in the day. We heard this song over and over and over again, and it's one of those classic songs you never tire of. In fact, I think the best of the classic rock of this period is going to survive long past the boomer generations. I think it stands with some of the greatest music in history- Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. Add the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to the list.

This song is IMO Pink Floyd's best. I love the way that Roger sings the downbeat verse and Dave sings the uplifting chorus (and did that amazing guitar solo) - the contrast between the two singers' voices and styles is perfect for the song. The Wall was largely self-therapy by Waters, who had never fully gotten over his father dying in World War II when Roger was a young boy.

I used to jam to the album on my flute as a teen. Nailed the guitar solo on this piece note for note. Of course, on a flute, embellishing with runs and trills is acceptable, which made this one a real treat. Running quarter time runs in each arpeggio was a real workout! Good times.

Great reaction and review, guys. David Gilmour's guitar work almost always serves the song, and never sounds like "time for the required solo." He creates melody that ties to the song, and one can't imagine the composition not having what he creates. He's a true artist, as well as the other members of the band are or were.

About David Gilmour's guitar solos. Many years ago I read in a guitar magazine that David Gilmour is deemed the Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend. He admits he never was a fast playing guitarist. His solo's aren't necessarily difficult. But his note placement is pretty much flawless. Pink Floyd is my favorite and always will be. And this is my favorite song of all time. Now to your reaction on it. Thank you for actually reacting to it with insight instead of listening and saying, "Well, that was good."

The Pulse version is so crazy you should react on it... And I was there (don't say I'm old, please!)... The David Gilmour guitar solo is long and completely amazing, he's not just a performer, he's mainly a story teller, the best guitar solo ever... Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but I'm a real fan of bands from UK in the 70's, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Genesis with Peter Gabriel... And David Bowie, of course... More and more, the UK is the land of big music anyway, you have so much to discover and have real pleasure... Pink Floyd is the band you must listen to the entire albums because most of them have no pause, everything is unchained and it's crazy... The Wall is also a movie, you should watch it with a very good sound, it's a kind of Roger Water's life, some pieces come from his life... My favorite one is "Atom Heart Mother" but it's special, "Meddle" is amazing too... In fact, every album is crazy... Thanks for your reaction, you're young but you like music, love from France 🇫🇷😘

I saw this performed live on the Division Bell Tour at Texas Stadium in April of 1994. It had just begun to lightly rain, and the laser lights going through the mist as they played and sang was a sight to see; one that I won't ever forget. Very surreal. Almost like church. I was only 23. Excellent reaction.

Some of the shimmer is a "high-strung" acoustic guitar, which is basically a 12-string with the lower, wound strings removed, leaving only the thin, higher-tuned strings to be the first ones struck on the downstroke. Brilliant work.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g-Cpo8iKttjaZYk.htmlsi=hpEvxSPhZ0yzHESi Above is the link to a cover version of the guitar solo from "Comfortably Numb" by Kent Nishimura, a 20 year old solo acoustic guitar fingerstyle prodigy. This was a rare time where Kent did not perform an entire version of the song with a guitar arrangement and without other instruments. It's near impossible to match the genius guitar work of David Gilmour, but Kent is a talented musician nonetheless.

Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 has one of the David's most iconic solos ever, along with Comfortably Numb and Time. Other songs with face melting solos worthy of checking out are On The Turning Away, Have A Cigar, and Money. Some live performances are also iconic, such as Sorrow and Learning to Fly from PULSE (the latter being played by Tim Renwick, the guitar player on Life in Dark Water by Al Stewart). Another Brick in the Wall from the same concert is also amazing, with both a CD and a DVD version. Then we have the two long masterpieces that are Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Echoes.

So, as the designated old guy, when I went to college at WKU (Western Kentucky University), there were quarterly Pink Floyd laser-light shows at their Planetarium. You'd get there 30 minutes before sunset; get a comfy-reclining chair with your favorite mind-altering substance, watch a virtual setting of the sun and 5 minutes of education about the night sky and then it would kick in to either Darkside of the Moon, or the Wall. It would include music generated laser-light show, (state of the art during 1979/1980-ish). My preference was DSotM, but Comfortably Numb was great to watch. You then stumbled out and went to a club because it was still early. It was an event that even eclipsed going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The word epic tends to be overused in society. This song is the very definition of EPIC in every respect. It's funny that the one guy said it sounds like the guy died by the end of this song. First I thought... wrong. But on reconsideration, he's not far from the truth. The character Pink does in fact die by the end of the song. At least the part of him that made him human with feelings. From this point on in the album a new and much darker and scarier Pink comes to the surface. The concept is deep complex and brilliant. You got to listen to the whole thing, probably a few times, to fully grasp it. "The Wall" is a brilliantly constructed performed and produced masterpiece for sure.

Dude.....LIVE. Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes...Zepp.......always choose the LIVE versions. And I felt exactly what was described when I was a child as well.....remember it like it was yesterday. It was like a souls view of your meat suit.

I think you find quite a few of their live performances are on a par(some better) w/their studio versions...plus there is the elaborate staging. Try the Pulse live version of this song.
