George Morrison died at 89 in 2008, dude was a highly decorated Rear Admiral Naval Aviator who served in WW2, Korea, was a nuclear weapons instructor, and was commander of Naval Operations during The Gulf Of Tonkin incident. There are sites who say he started the Vietnam War, which isn't true but he was there when it officially started. It's easy to see why a young, sweet, artistic, boy like Jim Couldn't get far enough a way from that life.

The Doors studied jazz and blues very hard when they were kids, so their music had a sophistication no other 60s band could match. It still sounds fresh today. Now - “When the Music’s Over.”

@@DJ-bj8ku I’ve given some thought to your post, and I tend to agree with Frank Zappa on this. “The Beatles were alright, but I always thought the Stones were a lot more interesting. They were a lot closer to the roots.” They were brilliant tunesmiths, but they had no formal training and worked their way along pretty much by accident. For a zillion reasons, I find their stuff a bit dated by now. Besides, I was always more of a blues cat than a rocker, so I guess it’s all a matter of taste.

@@danielschaeffer1294 What I loved about the Beatles is that no album sounds alike and each grew in sophistication, unlike most bands and soloists who have a formula and stick to it. And the sounds they produced were sublime. Even with Yellow Submarine, a simple pop sound, you feel like you’re actually in one. I’ve been around a long time and I like the Doors. Check out the interview with Jim’s father. Very illuminating about the generational divide.

@@danielschaeffer1294 ..... The Beatles, defined the way on everything and still are the trendsetters to this day, nothing is dated with them, you will find with every musician who has been successful that they were inspired and patterned their work after what the Beatles have done. The Beatles studied rhythm and blues heavily and was the foundation for most of their music at least in the beginning and their objective was to never have an album or song that sounded like the previous one. I'm someone who absolutely loves the Doors and definitely one of my all time favorites, But even the Doors credit The Beatles for many of their achievements. The sounds so common from the Doors and other groups from the sixties were unknown prior to The Beatles.
@deborahclappe108

Music prior to the Beatles was mature, rich, and full. It was not just music, it was lives lived and experiences that drove it to the depth that was the music of this Era. The Beatles brought fluff music...I always felt like music took a step backward. Bands like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Eagles, Queen...they laid the foundation for all other music...and they did it without synthesizers or digital manipulation. I don't listen to much mainstream music these days. There are a few contemporary artists that I go to on You Tube, but not many consistently have a lot of substance.

The keyboard was a Fender Rose - a poor man's Mellotron. The Doors was my favorite 60s group. When Jim died in Paris from a drug overdose, I was beside myself. Riders on The Storm was a befitting summation of a 5 years journey throughout the psychedelic era. I don't know if the 3 of you are still managing this KZfaq site, but I suggest listening to a short song of them - People Are Stange from 1967. A very typical song of theirs.

It’s about being born into a world of storm and havoc and having to figure out your own direction overtime in order to survive. You are in essence a rider on the storm of life. The killer on the road is a metaphor for all the obstacles you need to overcome in your journey through life that are trying to stop you.

The Doors were if not the most, certainly were one of the most important bands ever to be recognized. Morrison was no joke. His words penetrated the deepest parts of emotion, thought and imagination. Ray Manzereck obviously a musical genius with Robby Kreiger and John Densmore both perfect fits for the Doors musical style. FYI, they did use many of the top studio bass players around and tried to find somebody who would be a good fit to add to the band but finally Ray got frustrated and said screw it I'll do the bass parts. He added a small bass keyboard to the left side of his Fender Rhodes piano and that was that. IMO Morrisons antics may have a lot to do with the problem of attracting strictly professional musicians.

I don't usually listen to the radio much anymore. Back in 2016, I was driving home late one night (approx 2:30-3 am) on the highway, which was pretty much deserted, and about 30 minutes outside of town, a thunderstorm started up. I had the radio on to help keep me awake and alert. This song started up just as I hit the heavy rain and lightning, and the thunder was almost overhead. It was the most surreal experience I've ever had...still can't explain it. The small hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. Not sure if it was the electricity in the air or the coincidence that this song came on, but it was both creepy and really cool at the same time. :)

Except this song has an actual bass player on it. Although it's very deceptive because it sounds like a part a keyboard player would come up with. It's not a part a real bassist would play. But there are places where you can tell its a real bass because he's sliding up and down the fretboard. Plus all the documentation that names Elvis' bass player as the bassist on this song. I thought it was Ray for a whole lot of years and was very surprised to find out otherwise.

What I see is this bar in the middle of nowhere in the desert in Nevada somewhere, and it is pouring down in one of those unusual thunderstorms... And you see these people coming out of the bar, and Jim is describing who they are, one by one. They are all Riders of the Storm, living life in the moment. First is the crazy killer (brain squirming like a toad, I LOVE that analogy) coming out with his unknowing victims. Next are the lovers... The heavy rain is obstructing the view so all you really see are the silhouettes of these people. Everyone of the people are taking their cars to ride away from the bar, each with different destinies.

Only got caught in one desert rainstorm in Nevada where I drank from a fountain and got radiation poisoned water in me. I took iodine pills from a pharmacy and all was well. (It made me trip like I was on acid, people.) Took us 3 days and nights to get there ,got jobs, lived across the street from work and saw Led Zep live while living in Long Beach. Dig it! @@franciscoramirez4179 Yes, my future wife and I were lucky to get good people helping us and we stayed a few days with my former rock band member (Denny) in Vegas, just to get off the highways for a bit. The worst spot to hitch hike (and we waited 3 hours) was St. Louis. Luckily , a van of rare hippies like us came along and gave us R&R with the some home hospitailty and good smoke. The shortest time was with 2 dudes with a huge truck fill of wooden chairs of all types. We were on the west side of the Sierra Nevada Mtns. looking at the expanse of the Mohave desert below and the ribbon of highway that appeared to never end at the horizon, when they gave us a short ride to a desert crossroads.( I might have some facts rearranged since this was 46 years ago.) The coolest dudes were a black brother and a white longhair in a sweet 1963 Chevy Bel Air that shared Coors beer and smoke with us as we spent hours crossing the desert from the desert crossroad to Southern Cal. They are among the heroes of our adventure. Peace. Life has been good.

The bass sound comes from Ray Manzarek playing both the Fender Rhodes Bass Keyboard , and the Vox Continental Keyboard at the same time. He was one of the first keyboard players that stacked his keyboards. Ray has several videos where he describes how the Doors would come up with songs. Ray said this song was lifted from the song Riders In The Sky - Vaughn Monroe, when Robby was playing the song on his guitar in the studio, just messing around. Jim then said, "I have lyrics for that," and Densmore said, "We have to add some jazz to this song." By the way, all of them were Jazz players, and took their music roots from Jazz.

You can see it in the live clips. Apparently... one hand filled in the piano section whilst his other hand filled in the bass section on the other keyboard. So basically; he was playing 2 instruments at the same time! I really hope that is true and accurate because that would be unnaturally prodigious and otherworldly!!! Beyond genius!!! Thanks guys 🤘

According to guitarist Robby Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek, the song was created in the Doors' rehearsing studio,[8][13] and it was inspired by the country song "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend", written by Stan Jones and popularized by Vaughn Monroe.[14] Jim Morrison wrote the lyrics, which portion of it are allegedly influenced from real events of serial-killing hitchhikers.

Listened to this reaction again, and to answer your question about the bass, Ray Manzarek is the keyboard/organ player, and I saw him in an interview where he stated his parents loaned him the money when they started the band to buy a piece to go on the organ to be able to play bass while playing the keys. I'm sorry, I don't know what it was called that they put on the organ. Robby Krieger was guitar, and John densmore was drums.

~ Hi again - I'm trying to catch up on your videos and this song and your review was just awesome! 💝 Someone mentioned that there aren't many songs about rain during the day which brought to mind this beautiful gem "Laughter in the Rain" by Neil Sedaka. I think you'd like it. 🥰

Here's the story behind the song. at least a portion of his brooding lyric being inspired by the actions of Billy Cook, the notorious US spree-killer who murdered six people, including a young family, while hitchhiking from Missouri to California in the early 50s. Cook’s backstory had previously influenced HWY: An American Pastoral, the short experimental road movie Morrison made with filmmakers Paul Ferrara, Frank Lisciandro and Babe Hill in 1969. In the movie, Morrison played the hitchhiker who kills a man who stops to give him a ride - an event referenced directly in Riders On The Storm’s line “There’s a killer on the road”. Musically, the song then fell into place when The Doors began jamming on Stan Jones’ country standard (Ghost) Riders In The Sky: A Cowboy Legend during rehearsals. “We were playing (Ghost) Riders In The Sky and Jim was fooling around and came up with ‘Ghost Riders On The Storm’,” guitarist Robby Krieger recalled in 2013.

I attended college in France for a while back in the 1970s and hitchhiked everywhere. I did 3 trips to Italy (400+ miles each way) and had a few scary moments, but mostly the people who gave us rides were fantastic. BTW, I never hitched alone. Back to the song, this is one of my all-time favs, and it always reminds me of my time hitching back in the day. The Doors were brilliant musicians, the keyboards, the guitar, and drums. Listen to "The End", "LA Woman" and appreciate each of their parts individually, just amazing. Just turn out the lights and let the movie play in your head.

Great reaction guys. I really got into The Doors when I was in high school in the early 80s. When I got my first job I joined the Columbia House record club and eventually had every Doors LP on vinyl. I've never done drugs but I swore I knew what it must be like when I would listen to them for hours at a time. I would love to watch you react to my new favorite band. Again I'm late to the party because this group isn't together anymore either. Although, it's not because someone died. Porcupine Tree, the greatest band you've probably never heard of. Incredible musicians, especially live. If you decide to give them a go, I have a few suggestions: Arriving Somewhere but not Here, live from Chicago. Anesthetize, live from Tilburg. (The shortest 17 1/2 minutes of music you'll ever experience) Cheating the Polygraph, live from Tilburg. The quintessential PT song. (Video title says Live from Anesthetize) Dark Matter, live from Tilburg. The Start of Something Beautiful, live from Chicago. (My personal favorite)

Yes I’ve seen it sunshine and storm at the same time. Very few times but I’ve seen it down south. Anyway The Doors were imbedded in my brain from 6 yrs old. I never understood the lyrics until I got older and appreciated the music and read his poetry books but his mind was very strange in terms of writing material. Brilliant but strange. Ray on keyboard always steps up their sound so well. That set them apart from the rest.

I've been in sunshine while it's raining. Small raincloud, not blocking out the sun. Rare, but it's happened several times at least in my lifetime.

I did read a few years ago about the owner of a rock bar in Paris,on his retirement, felt obliged to reveal the 'real' truth of Jim Morrison's death. He claimed that Morrison died of a drug overdose in the toilet of the club, figuring that this was not good publicity for the place,he & some friends carried the body(& that of Morrison's girlfriend who was unconscious through drugs) back to his flat & put him in the bath tub. Crazy enough to be true?!?!

Next you should give a listen to their songs Roadhouse Blues or L.A. Woman. Ray Manzarek plays the bass with a Fender bass keyboard and they would fatten it up if need be with a session bass player, but most often it was just Ray playing bass on keyboard with one hand and keyboards with the other hand.
