I would probably call Roger closer to realism than cynicism. But ROger actually used to be a decent singer, he sang on MOST of Animals and after. He's certainly not a good singer now, but here he doesn't really try 'that' hard. He does actually have a good country voice in this, but you can see where he kind of backs out of singing and basically just says the lines. But I'd argue about Momentary Lapse. Dogs of War, One Slip, and Sorrow are ALL more cynical and depressing than Roger was. I'd heard they WANTED them that depressing in order to sound like Roger. I'd even heard David did'nt want Learning to Fly on there because it was 'too poppy' and likely to be a hit, which it was. Meanwhile if you listen to "the powers that be' its hard not to see that as realism rather than cynicism. BOTH of those are great if only for the fact you look at Genesis and Yes and Peter Gabriel and by then almost everybody was putting out poppy crap. ONLY Pink Floyd and Roger Waters were painting the Eighties as they actually were. The rift was basically Roger thought the band was done, Dave and Nick disagreed, so we get two different bands.
