Nahh, Zappa was sort of delusional regarding drugs. Don't know how much of an urban legend it might be, but Zappa got high on coffee and cigarettes for ages. Really strong and rather gross by at least a couple of his musicians who got to drink coffee with Zappa. And man... seriously, if you call cigarettes a vegetable... you've got a drug problem. His thing was generally about drugs that might turn you into an asshole. Coffee and cigarettes are just disgusting but not exactly impairing. Now, if you're drunk or coked up... yeah, might not gonna work with Zappa's band setlist.

It can get very unpleasant, in particular the digestive issues and the fact that you get a very hard time trying to just relax and try to sleep. Zappa always denied playing with the Floyd. For years I heard the audio and could recognize Zappa's guitar playing.But I could have been wrong..Now we have the video evidence. Reminds me of Johnny Winter denying being the second guitarist on the infamous Hendrix bootleg recorded at the Scene in New York of '68. The guitar playing is very obvious. Johnny said he never met Morrison. It's possible he didn't remember because it was evident that everyone was wasted that night. Zappa on the other hand,he was never wasted. Everyone at the Festival probably was and Zappa didn't want to be associated with it. Regardless,I enjoyed this video very much,thanks.
@HckrNeo13 жыл бұрын
Honestly, your take is probably closest to correct. Frank was not a drug user (going so far as to ban drug use among every member of his *massive* touring groups). But on top of that, Frank was just never a psychedelic hippie guy. They weren't his people and it wasn't his movement. He was a serious composer at heart who lived and breathed music, nicotine, and caffeine. Aimless 20 minute noodlings weren't his bag and it shows on his face here. I'd imagine he realized how high Floyd (and everyone else on the stage) were, thought it was unprofessional, and couldn't wait to leave.

It's amazing how masterfully Frank simultaneously assimilates and commands the sound of the Floyd, and it's exactly what you would expect from him. I imagine it was not too difficult for him, right up his alley in fact. I have never seen an outsider so seamlessly and completely become one of the Floyd in what was likely the time span of this video. Whether or not he cared is beside the point. He still perfectly nails anything the Floyd throws at him. I am sure if anyone could appreciate what the Floyd was doing at the time it was Frank. This is experimentation at it's finest. It is what it's not, a perfect match. Frank Floyd. A lot of folks here are talking about drugs and saying the music is terrible. I suspect it's because they know more about drugs than about music. I suggest listenening as carefully as Frank did. By the look on his face before he plays he is obviously absorbing, calculating, feeling, and planning before executing. He is nothing short of brilliant from the first note. Here is a meeting of some of the most pioneering minds in rock, jazz, and experimental music. It's great art, a one of a kind performance.

I agree - Zappa's used to a lot more chords per song, and his soloing feels somewhat elementary compared to stuff he's done in his own band. But he was trying to fit in. If you've only got one chord to work with for the majority of the tune, you tend to meander in E until something else happens.
