Meant the wall was deeply personal. He never really got over losing his dad and never realy knowing him. So he was very hard to deal with most of the time during recording. Before the wall they're relationship was manageable.

Nahh, Zappa was sort of delusional regarding drugs. Don't know how much of an urban legend it might be, but Zappa got high on coffee and cigarettes for ages. Really strong and rather gross by at least a couple of his musicians who got to drink coffee with Zappa. And man... seriously, if you call cigarettes a vegetable... you've got a drug problem. His thing was generally about drugs that might turn you into an asshole. Coffee and cigarettes are just disgusting but not exactly impairing. Now, if you're drunk or coked up... yeah, might not gonna work with Zappa's band setlist.

@@faisall6364 I beg to differ. I don't know if you may not drink coffee at all or just moderately or just the ocassional cup. But downing a few liters of really strong coffee will for sure mess you up. Especially if you do it when otherwise you might just have a couple of cups a day of normally dosed cups of coffee. It can get very unpleasant, in particular the digestive issues and the fact that you get a very hard time trying to just relax and try to sleep. Coffee has been a socially acceptable drug for so long, nobody cares about it. You can sure as hell drink so much coffee that you feel sick.

Zappa always denied playing with the Floyd. For years I heard the audio and could recognize Zappa's guitar playing. But I could have been wrong..Now we have the video evidence. Reminds me of Johnny Winter denying being the second guitarist on the infamous Hendrix bootleg recorded at the Scene in New York of '68. The guitar playing is very obvious. Johnny said he never met Morrison. It's possible he didn't remember because it was evident that everyone was wasted that night. Zappa on the other hand,he was never wasted. Everyone at the Festival probably was and Zappa didn't want to be associated with it. Regardless,I enjoyed this video very much, thanks.

Honestly, your take is probably closest to correct. Frank was not a drug user (going so far as to ban drug use among every member of his *massive* touring groups). But on top of that, Frank was just never a psychedelic hippie guy. They weren't his people and it wasn't his movement. He was a serious composer at heart who lived and breathed music, nicotine, and caffeine. Aimless 20 minute noodlings weren't his bag and it shows on his face here. I'd imagine he realized how high Floyd (and everyone else on the stage) were, thought it was unprofessional, and couldn't wait to leave.

What's astonishing to me is that when Frank comes in he has completely integrated the style and transcends it. Proceedingly the whole band together ascends, in perfect union despite their differences, without anyone forfeiting their own expression. People saying it doesn't jive can't hear and understand what's going on properly.

It's amazing how masterfully Frank simultaneously assimilates and commands the sound of the Floyd, and it's exactly what you would expect from him. I imagine it was not too difficult for him, right up his alley in fact. I have never seen an outsider so seamlessly and completely become one of the Floyd in what was likely the time span of this video. Whether or not he cared is beside the point. He still perfectly nails anything the Floyd throws at him. I am sure if anyone could appreciate what the Floyd was doing at the time it was Frank. This is experimentation at it's finest. It is what it's not, a perfect match. Frank Floyd. A lot of folks here are talking about drugs and saying the music is terrible. I suspect it's because they know more about drugs than about music. I suggest listenening as carefully as Frank did. By the look on his face before he plays he is obviously absorbing, calculating, feeling, and planning before executing. He is nothing short of brilliant from the first note. Here is a meeting of some of the most pioneering minds in rock, jazz, and experimental music. It's great art, a one of a kind performance.

how humbling it must've been for Nick Mason and Dave Gilmour . Think of Terry Bozzio and Frank in their place : Roger Keith Barrett would've loved it !

It doesn't look like Zappa is really comfortable in this jam. I guess they thought Zappa = Experimental & Pink Floyd = Experimental ( definitely some of their old stuff ) so both of them together will be a blast. It doesn't always work that way. Still an historical encounter between 2 musical legends with rather different mindset. Probably from the historical Amougies Festival, Belgium 1969

I agree - Zappa's used to a lot more chords per song, and his soloing feels somewhat elementary compared to stuff he's done in his own band. But he was trying to fit in. If you've only got one chord to work with for the majority of the tune, you tend to meander in E until something else happens.

It’s awesome that young artists could collaborate (even if it wasn’t that good). They were writing new pages in music history.

Upon adjournment of the free-form Jam Session FZ was immediately withdrawn from the list of Syd Barrett replacements, thereby opening the door for one David Gilmour !

Prima di tutto questa è la quintessenza della musica psichedelica ed è un viaggio nella mente di Syd Barret, poi c'è la matrice jazz blues. Buon viaggio.....

In 69 Frank Zappa's guitar playing was at least 4 years behind the style that made him a very unique guitar hero from 1974 on. Still undeveloped, though it could be interesting. But this is a rather messy jam session.
