“It’s a gas, man.” was 60s slang meaning something was thoroughly entertaining, enjoyable, or amusing. See the Stones, “Jumping Jack Flash”. 😁

This was a shortened version of this song. There was a continuation of the guitar solo, after a slow down. You should go back and listen to the whole thing on your free time.

Every Pink Floyd song takes you on a journey, for real. Easy to get lost in the message and the unbelievably mesmerizing music. You're taken to another place altogether. Also, there's a reason "The Dark Side of the Moon" album was on the billboard album charts for as long as it was (950 weeks). It's best when listened to as a whole.

This was the song that introduced me to PF back in the 70's. When I first heard it on the radio, I went and bought the album the first chance I had. I think I drove my mom crazy playing that album. Unfortunately, this one was the short version which is what they played on the radio. There are two more guitar solos, a smooth cool gentle one and then a heart pumping solid one. You have got to listen to at least the album version.

One of the most famous songs written in 7. That came about because of the sound clips at the beginning (the coins jingling, the ripped receipt, the cash register etc). They only had 7 clips and spliced them all together. 7 clips informed the 7 time signature. But the transitions to 4 for the guitar solo and back to 7 for the third verse are just iconic. Dick Parry played the sax, he was a friend of David Gilmour I believe and they apparently got him to play because he was the only sax player they knew and were a bit afraid to ask anyone really famous. And the biggest irony is they'd written a song about money and getting it and not letting anyone else have it but it was on a record that went stratospheric with sales and earned them all a lot of money.

The song was also Roger Waters making a poke at bands who got wealthy in success only to have that exact success visited on themselves. Its also fitting that DSOM basically tells the story of a life from birth to death and there is a point where all strive to build wealth, making Money a fitting contribution to that overall story.

While the album itself is about life and is full of satire, often in bites, Money is the most satirical..... and yet some fans don’t like it because they miss the satire..... they think it is about making money and hoarding it. lol And a shame you used this particular heavily edited video......I suggest you do the original album version, even if on CD , or the live version from Pulse, 1994.

Money has not only an interesting time signature (7/4 to 4/4), but an interesting criticism about greed on an album that helped make them rich & famous. Another interesting Pink Floyd that I think you'll like is "Mother"...really shows how diverse their sound can be!

They didn't know that the album would make them rich and famous when they wrote the song. Like many artists, I'm sure they were initially sincere in their disdain for wealth, until it came to them that is.

The very next track from this album - Us and them - has a beautiful saxophone part - listen to it - it's a beautiful and moving anti-war track. Had been waiting for you to get to this song and very, very glad that you chose the official video, it really helps to bring out all the references in the song. It is so impressive how you seem to be wise beyond your years by understanding not just the song but what money can do if not responsible with it. The division between the "have" and the "have nots" is shown in great contrast which is the message they were trying to convey. It is that bass-line and sax solo that just grabs you and pulls you into the groove.

As Bruce Willis said in Die Hard, "Welcome to the party, pal". Your Pink Floyd journey will be amply rewarded. You should include some of their pre-Dark Side of the Moon material, especially selections from "Atom Heart Mother". When Dark Side of the Moon was released, Pink Floyd fans, I among them, thoroughly excoriated the band for "going commercial", as the band's prior music was decidedly non-commercial. Of course, Pink Floyd laughed all the way to the bank. Also, one of the producers (the producer?) was Alan Parsons, who came into his own with the band "The Alan Parsons Project". Think "I Robot". Thanks for a great reaction / review.

As we are talking about "Dark Side", on the official PF channel they have realeased the 2023 remastered album as a one shot all the way through listen to and also a live 1974 version from Earls Court. Obviously, don't do a live listen to "on air", but off air, your comments would be interesting to hear the difference that 49 years makes to the same album. I can almost guarantee that you'll enjoy writing that script. (oh bugger, I sound like a teacher there, sorry, I'm a lorry driver!)

If you fancy yourself going way back to when Pink Floyd was "tuning" into the sounds that made them such a great band, I suggest you listen to "Echoes." Their rendition of it in 1972's Live at Pompeii is one of my favorites. Also, if you're ever curious about David Gilmour's work nowadays, I strongly recommend his own 2017's "Live at Pompeii" show, a film that documents his 2015/16 world tour promoting his latest album "Rattle That Lock."

Great reaction Becks! My least favorite song off of the Dark Side album, and I like them all, so there's that. Dark Side was an experimental album in many ways, partly since they interwove bits of conversations with staff and crew into the album and partly because they used clips of interesting sounds as the basis for some of the songs, like the clips used for Money here and the various clips used for On The Run. Dick Parry did great saxophone work for this album too, and I love hearing his sax, both the mellow, like the main on Us and Them, and the more frantic or intense sections like on Money. Looking forward to next Friday's track as it'll be my birthday. 😀I'm kinda hoping for the Brain Damage/Eclipse two-in-one song that ends this album, but I'll be happy so long as you choose something good. 😛

Hmm 🤔, "My least favorite song off of the Dark Side album" ... there's always 1, isn't there ??? I loved the rest of your comment, but it always strikes me as really strange when someone says they don't like such killer work like this though. I think it's an awesome song and very cleverly done. Oh well, to each his own. Happy Birthday 🎂(for next week) 👍😉😊...

@@StevesFunhouse LOL. And you're right about there always being one that is least favorite. 😀 A silly thing to say yet I said it anyway. 😛 I really do like the song though. The great bass line and the looped 'money' clip really stand out along with the great sax work. I think the thing that made me less of a fan of it was how it seemed discordant to the rest of the album. It seems to break the stylistic and thematic flow of the rest of the tracks and, while it is great on its own, it just didn't seem to fit well with everything else. It is a much better single than it is an album track. But it certainly fit the intended album concept of things that drive people mad. And thanks for the birthday wishes! I've lived longer than anyone expected, which is its own kind of madness and thus fits with the Dark Side theme. 😀

What is the true meaning of money to you. Yes, it can buy us nice things, but, can it buy us true love and happiness or just disfavor and distress. I guess it depends on how we decide to spend it. As in the song "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, Will it buy us a ticket into that realm at the end of our life if we are of that belief? Pink Floyd, my favorite band ever. Mind jarring. Causes many to explore their convictions and priorities as many of their songs do. Reaction ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Each of the songs on the album (Dark Side of the Moon) revolve around the central theme of the album which is: (what drives people crazy). (MONEY); If love, or lack of money can drive people crazy. The songs on this album are like the spokes of a bicycle wheel, they start from the hub of the wheel (central theme), and each contributes to supporting the rim. Listen carefully, and you'll see that each of the songs points to an aspect of life that can drive people crazy.

Actually, "it's a gas" is 60's/70's slang for "a good time". Sort of like "it's a hoot". Something fun and cool. Despite them showing a car shortly after that line in the video, they're not referencing gasoline. Often lost (because you're focusing on the groove) is that the lyrics are poking fun at the rich and how too much is never enough. He's flying first-class but that's not good enough, now he wants a private Lear jet. He's got caviar and can afford 4-star restaurants, but he's still thinking about buying a Football team. All that money? Share it fairly - but don't take a slice of *my* pie. Fun fact: the people speaking at the end of the song during the fade-out were people who worked at the recording studio; Pink Floyd wrote open-ended questions like "When was the last time you hit someone, and why?" and "Are you afraid of dying?" and then recorded their responses on tape and put it in the transition times between songs. One of the many, many reasons why Dark Side of the Moon is best experienced from start to finish all in one sitting.

That was weird. The song was shorter than on the album. There were two guitar solos and a slow vibe with the bass and keyboards. Maybe this was the single version, hence the off kilter music video. Wonder if they had anything to do with it.

This is the edited down version the record company's were guilty of this they would take the album version slice it to pieces and release the 3 minute version as a single usually without the bands concent.for example I have a 7 inch single version of lynryd skynyrd version of free bird and the track fades out just as the 4 minutes of guitar solo is about to start.and the whole middle section of ram jams black betty was removed just to keep it below 4 minutes so the radio stations would play it.always find the album versions of you can and by the way good channel keep up the good work.

That's the thing. Music can acutely observe society but it never ever really changes anything. It just doesn't. Young people are fooled into thinking that music can make a difference in the world. As we get older, we learn that it can't, so it becomes less important to us. No, even in the 60s, music wasn't what stopped the Vietnam War. It was the nightly news showing images of dead Americans to those kids' parents that did it.

Thanks Becky . This song is pointing out the greed and avarice that goes with modern society. Dave Gilmour was singing initially from the perspective of someone who only cares about his own wealth. Roger Waters took control of Pink Floyd's creative direction from Dark Side of the Moon onwards and he has a lot of things to say about the world that came after the second world war. Hope you get to listen to this album in its entirety at some point to get the full effect of all the lyrics. See you soon Becky. Ps I'm nebob1 in your twitch chat just to confuse you ☺

Becky, it's best not to get too distracted by KZfaq videos, a lot are fan made. Official promo videos didn't really become a thing until the advent of MTV in the 1980's. The music of the 60's and 70's often didn't have any accompanying videos, and when they did it would usually just be the artist performing the song in a TV studio or wandering about a location, they weren't narrative based or insightful. There is nothing in the actual lyrics that discusses any contrast or balanced view, the song is purely from the point of view someone who has it all, lives a lavish life, and has no guilt about it all.

"it's a gas" is the lyric and back then it merely meant it's really neat: "it's a gas." The song is a critique against capitalism and money chasing and how it's a shallow greedy motivation. Money and it's pursuit leads to war and starvation. Remember Pink Floyd is very progressive. It's called Progressive rock for a reason. Money is always bad is the message.

The song really isn't about the various uses of money. It's more about how money accumulates into the pockets of the ones who don't need it. You need to get the lyric sheet so you can read them after listening, Pink Floyd is heavy on social commentary or personal revelations, the lyrics are ironic or satirical. Themes are greed, inequality, the corrupting influence of wealth. Music videos came long after, this was a auditory journey, often an album or a side of an album is a journey itself, revealing a story, or commentary. The peak of which is PF's 'rock opera' of The Wall, which is only rivaled by Tommy by The Who.

Suggestion: Consider the possible sarcasm in the lyrics. At the time that this album hit, major rock groups were buying private jets, getting super wealthy, swimming in money. This is meant to be ironic.

It's a condemnation of greed, especially if you juxtapose this song with the next song to appear- Us and Them.

They misquote the bible when they have the line "Money, so they say is the root of all evil today" Because it's the LOVE of money that's the root of all evil
