So now you've finally come to your first full-album-reaction... and what an album it is ! The dark side of the moon has a Guinness book of world records entry, for the longest stay in the US Top 200 Billboard Charts... for 756 consecutive weeks ! It's truly one of Pink Floyd's absolute masterpieces ! Next album you should react to entirely should be "Wish you were here" from 1975. You'll be blown away with this one, as well. Best wishes from Germany : Gerry

They were incredible live, Dereck. Was a fan since 1968 and finally saw them live in '88, and yes they did a lot off their earlier albums despite the theme of a particular tour which usually featured any given new album. There are several live videos out there, DVD's etc and check them out. But do (or listen to) their earlier studio releases of any of these songs first to see what made those awesome concerts possible. Then dive into the live stuff. Because it's interesting to hear and see how well they did the studio feel when live, but added so much more interesting depth and variance, and of course the awesome visual spectacles theirs are known for. Oh yes, you're gonna love the live shows! Those were two good videos you did there and I hope they stay up. Probably will since you paused a lot to comment which is what you should do as you ARE a reactor. LOL! Nice reaction. Keep 'em comin' ! And do more Beatles and some Yes! ✌️😎

«And if the band you're in starts playing different tune...» To fully understand the tragedy of this line, you have to listen to "Jugband Blues", the LAST song recorded with Syd Barrett... And to have a glimpse of Syd's own tragedy, try his song "Dark Globe" (so... Syd Barrett), it's how a poet speaks about his distress..

Money is in 7/8 but the guitar solo is in 4/4 so that is a noticeable change in the bass line. The voices at the end of Money pertain to violence and refer to the next song Us And Them. And yes on their Division Bell tour from which we get the P.U.L.S.E. videos, they played the whole Dark Side album.
@krkhns
@krkhns 3 жыл бұрын
I've been having this argument for 40 years - It's in 7/4 time, not 7/8 :). Roger Water -"For the solo section Gilmour suggested changing the time signature from 7/4 into 4/4..." Engineer Alan Parsons, "The core of the song is a bass riff with a guitar an octave apart in 7/4". In reality, most musical scholars will tell you that part is actually a measure of 4/4 followed by a measure of 3/4. Try it, it actually fits: one-TWO-three-FOUR one-TWO-three /one -TWO-three-FOUR one-TWO-three/ one-TWO-three-FOUR one-TWO-three/. Either way, it works out to 7/4 in the end. Just a matter of where you want to put the last back beat. This is how it works out - there are 4 beats per measure, and each measure contains seven quarter-notes.For it to be 7/8 time, there would have to be 8 beats per measure (which there isn't) and each measure would have to consist of seven eighth-notes (which they aren't, they are quarter-notes). If it were 7/8 time, the rhythm pattern for the solo would be half the speed as the rhythm pattern for the melody. Its not, the beat stays the same. So, if we agree the solo is in 4/4, then the rest can only be in 7/4 or 4/4 + 3/4 since there is no change in the beat, only the number of notes played during four of those beats.

@@krkhns Just that I heard Roger on the Dark Side reissue documentary say it was 7/8. 7 pieces of tape cut to equal lengths and spliced together to form the opening sound effect. So, maybe Roger is wrong. I don't care one way or the other.

The lunatic is in my head (2x) you raise the blade, you make the change; you rearrange me till i’m sane. you lock the door, and throw away the key. there’s someone in my head but it’s not me. bone chilling lyrics on how society almost forces people to conform to its will, and those who don’t are mocked and even shunned and disgraced; or in today’s language, canceled. About your comment that such a good song as "Money" was, as you put it, "buried" in the middle of the album. What you have to remember is that this was in the days of vinyl albums, long before CD's. So what is now the middle of a CD was the 1st song of the second side of the album. That's why there's not a transition from "Great Gig in the Sky" into "Money", because the listener would have to get up, go to the turntable, flip the record over, and start playing again. on a normal album the gaps between songs would be actually visible on the album side. so if you wanted to play a certain song you would put the needle down there. With the way PF blended one song into another, however, there were no indications on the album where one song ended and another started. But with "Money" being 1st on the 2nd side, you could easily find it, and if you wanted to hear it again you would just restart the album side. So actually it was one of the most prominent locations on the album it could have been placed.

"Any Colour You Like" is a very British commentary of the political climate, and as true now as it was in 73. "pick any colour you like, they're all blue" is a comment on the Labour Party and Conservatives, who very often pursue very similar conservative (small c) policies, offering no real choice at all. Labour colours are red, while Tories are blue... but they're all blue really at most points in history.

Money wasn't the band's favourite song. The whole album is just wonderful, Great Gig in the Sky is the standout for me, so much from so little.

You kind of missed it "And everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon" is basically saying "But none of it really matters anyway.". The entire album in my opinion is a commentary about how frivolous modern life is.

So....Put yourself in the shoes of Pink Floyd, and ask yourself..."How do you follow the 'Masterpiece' that is 'Dark Side of the Moon',"....Now go listen to "Wish You Were Here'" beginning to end as you did with Dark Side...

3:00 So you do love money Dereck :) To tell you the truth we all love it too. Money can be handy in many situations. What ? not the money, but Money (the title, not the painter: Monet)... Oh well.. It is fairly true as well :P

Okay, so if you're looking for more french classics : my favorites are "La vallée de Dana" by Manau, and "Les Lacs du Connemara" by Michel Sardou, or "Les démons de Minuit" : put any of these in a party in France, everyone knows the lyrics, and sings them, they're so good

I always cringe inside a bit when people choose to "Live React" to Darkside, because frankly the album isn't meant to be paused and talked over, but to put your best headphones on and simply LISTEN. That being said, I understand how these things work, and you did a pretty good job of picking your pause points. But do yourself a favor and revisit it off camera. With a high quality copy that doesn't break between tracks. Thoughtful insights and I like that you do your research. Do Wish You Were Here next if you decide to do another full album.

@@DereckReacts Floyd fans can be VERY picky. God forbid you pause in the middle of a Gilmour solo lol. I suppose it's just something we have to deal with to get around the copyright strikes. The more you listen to Floyd the more you'll understand, and in your personal listening you won't want it interrupted either.
